Mermell told Pasadena Now. “First and foremost, Measure I prevented the city from having to make even more painful budget reductions following three straight years of cuts. Measure I has also provided for investment in much-needed capital projects. To name just a few, by providing our Police and Fire Departments with new 911 communication equipment we can maintain response times and ensure that our first responders remain in constant communication with one another when responding to emergencies and calls for service; by repairing broken sidewalks we ensure that they are safe for all residents to traverse, particularly the elderly and those with limited mobility, and providing effective street lighting promotes neighborhood safety and quality of life.”Following three years of budget cuts, voters passed Measure I, a three-quarter-cent sales tax increase which was passed by voters in the last election. The tax raises about $21 million a year.A companion measure allows the city to use proceeds of the tax hike, up to $7 million, to help fund local schools. So far, the money is being used to replenish the district’s state-mandated reserve fund.Earlier this month, the City Council voted to direct the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance amending the city’s municipal code to change the name of the Human Services and Recreation Department to the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. The proposed changes are also expected to relieve the burden on the Public Works Department by allowing the department to focus more closely on a growing number of capital projects, that came about due to Measure I. 4 recommendedShareShareTweetSharePin it HerbeautyYou Can’t Go Past Our Healthy Quick RecipesHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyThis Is What Happens To Your Face After DermaplaningHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyRemove Belly Fat Without Going Under The KnifeHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeauty9 Of The Best Family Friendly Dog BreedsHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeauty5 Things To Avoid If You Want To Have Whiter TeethHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyGained Back All The Weight You Lost?HerbeautyHerbeauty Community News Top of the News center_img Subscribe faithfernandez More » ShareTweetShare on Google+Pin on PinterestSend with WhatsApp,Virtual Schools PasadenaHomes Solve Community/Gov/Pub SafetyPasadena Public WorksPasadena Water and PowerPASADENA EVENTS & ACTIVITIES CALENDARClick here for Movie Showtimes Business News First Heatwave Expected Next Week Pasadena Will Allow Vaccinated People to Go Without Masks in Most Settings Starting on Tuesday Community News Government Measure I Funds Used for Police, Library, Jackie Robinson Center Projects $9.4 million used for high priority projects according to City Manager Published on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 | 8:45 pm EVENTS & ENTERTAINMENT | FOOD & DRINK | THE ARTS | REAL ESTATE | HOME & GARDEN | WELLNESS | SOCIAL SCENE | GETAWAYS | PARENTS & KIDS Home of the Week: Unique Pasadena Home Located on Madeline Drive, Pasadenalast_img read more

Depay hopes to become the best

first_imgMemphis Depay has set himself the ultimate ambition – to become the best player in the world during his time at Manchester United. Press Association The 21-year-old penned a deal to move from PSV Eindhoven to Old Trafford when the transfer window opens in July and the Holland ace has lofty ambitions of what he wants to achieve in the Premier League. Depay, who has scored 25 goals this season, has a tattoo emblazoned on his chest that reads “dream chaser” and he is setting out to achieve even more in his early career. “His performance on the training ground is different from other trainers. After the World Cup he told me to stay hungry and I told myself to stay hungry. When I made the decision to stay I wanted to be champion and top scorer. I set those goals and I hope to achieve them. “It will be great to have an opportunity to train with him and work with him. Of course I am looking forward. “I want to improve myself but Dutch players have played also in the Premier League and I spoke with many of them. I believe I can be a big player in the Premier League – I showed my ability in the World Cup. “I am very excited. I was always reading about the Premier League. It has been a big dream and one that came true. But is not the end of the dream, it is just starting.” The dream now is more long-term, to dethrone the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Eden Hazard as the best player in the world. And, with an affinity with former United favourite Ronaldo, Depay has already drawn comparisons to the Real Madrid forward from fellow Dutch international Leroy Fer. Whilst Depay regards Ronaldo as a hero, he also knows he needs to emulate the Portuguese if he is to get close to the dream he is chasing. “I heard Leroy Fer speak about it and it is great to hear that from other players,” he added. “If you read it in the media it is great, but I am 21 and I have not reached the level of Cristiano Ronaldo. “He is a big hero for me and one day I hope to reach that level. He scores so many goals and I want to fight to be one of the best players in the world.” Depay is the first summer signing for United as they look to build on the squad which has all but sealed a return to Champions League football. Meanwhile, United’s executive vice chairman Ed Woodward is likely to shed some light on Van Gaal’s spending plans tomorrow. United will announce their third quarterly results at noon and Woodward will then take part in a conference call with investors when the subject of summer spending is likely to be raised. “‘Dream chaser’ stands for me chasing my dreams,” he said. “I believe I can be one of the best players in the world and I have to dream and believe to achieve. It is tattooed on my chest. “You just have to work every day on your dreams. My dreams started with going to the World Cup and then when I was there I scored two goals – becoming the youngest ever Dutch goalscorer – and I was very happy. “But when the World Cup was finished I realised that was not it. I had to take more on to the pitch – there was more to do. “So after the World Cup in pre-season I spoke to my manager and said I have to keep focused. Scoring in the World Cup was good but not the end of it. Now I am on fire.” Depay opted to remain in the Eredivisie last summer despite plenty of interest following those World Cup goals against Australia and Chile. He revealed his former Holland coach and future United boss Louis van Gaal told him to keep improving on his game before he made a move for the forward – fending off reported interest from Paris St Germain and Liverpool. “He is different,” Depay said of Van Gaal. last_img read more

Warriors’ DeMarcus Cousins describes fan interactions, says he’s been called racial slur

first_img Russell Westbrook details heated exchange with Jazz fans: ‘I’ll f— you up’ “Oh, I’ve been called n—,” he said, “and it’s crazy because this has happened to me on a few occasions. I reported it to the league, and, you know, I may have said whatever I said back and I was still punished for it. But obviously it became a bigger issue when it was Russ [Westbrook], and he was still fined for it. I don’t really understand it. We’re the product. We push this league, so I don’t understand. When does our safety, when does it become important?” Cousins added: “I don’t really want to [name cities or teams], because I’m not really trying to put a label on an entire fan base. There are ignorant individuals in every city. I’ll just put it like that. … [The league] tells you to ignore it, or whatever the case may be, but how many times am I supposed to ignore that. Me coming from where I come from [in Mobile, Alabama], they lucky all they got was a response.” Related News Draymond Green sounds off on Russell Westbrook’s Jazz fan incident Warriors forward DeMarcus Cousins shared his experience with fan interactions during games on Yahoo Sports latest video podcast, “Posted Up.”Cousins, who is in his ninth season in the NBA, detailed exchanges with fans who used racist language. He didn’t say where these incidents took place, just that it has happened a number of times.center_img After Cousins said he reported the interactions to the league, Yahoo Sports reached out for a comment. The NBA released a statement saying: “While it would not be appropriate for us to address any specific conversations we have with individual players, we review all situations involving alleged fan misconduct. If we confirm the misconduct, appropriate measures are taken directly with the fan in question.”The conversation with Cousins was sparked by an incident that involved Westbrook in Utah. The Thunder guard said after that game a fan told him to “get down on your knees like you’re used to.” The fan was ultimately banned for life while Westbrook was fined $25,000 for his in-game response.“I think it kind of went viral with the whole Russ thing,” Cousins said. “I’m sure that played a part in it. He’s had multiple instances in that same city. You even got the one clip of the guy flipping Russ off. Like, when does the game get that serious for a fan? Why are you that angry? This dude is literally out there putting a ball through a hoop. How do you get that angry? “last_img read more

Huge tax bill heads for passage as GOP senators fall in line

first_imgWASHINGTON – After weeks of quarrels, qualms and then eleventh-hour horse-trading, Republicans revealed the details of their huge national tax rewrite late Friday — along with announcements of support that all but guarantee approval to give President Donald Trump the Christmas legislative triumph he’s been aching for.The legislation would slash tax rates for big business and lower levies on the richest Americans in a massive $1.5 trillion bill that the GOP plans to muscle through Congress next week before its year-end break. Benefits for most other taxpayers would be smaller.“This is happening. Tax reform under Republican control of Washington is happening,” House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin told rank-and-file members in a conference call. “Most critics out there didn’t think it could happen. … And now we’re on the doorstep of something truly historic.”According to the 1,097-page bill released late Friday, today’s 35 per cent rate on corporations would fall to 21 per cent, the crown jewel of the measure for many Republicans. Trump and GOP leaders had set 20 per cent as their goal, but added a point to free money for other tax cuts that won over wavering lawmakers in final talks. The legislation represents the first major legislative achievement for the GOP after nearly a full year in control of Congress and the White House. It’s the widest-ranging reshaping of the tax code in three decades and is expected to add to the nation’s $20 trillion debt. The tax cuts are projected to add $1.46 trillion over a decade. The bill would repeal an important part of President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act — the requirement that all Americans have health insurance or face a penalty — as the GOP looks to unravel a law it failed to repeal and replace this past summer.Only on Friday did Republicans cement the needed support for the overhaul, securing endorsements from wavering senators.Marco Rubio of Florida relented in his high-profile opposition after negotiators expanded the tax credit that parents can claim for their children. He said he would vote for the measure next week.Rubio had been holding out for a bigger child credit for low-income families. After he got it, he tweeted that the change was “a solid step toward broader reforms which are both Pro-Growth and Pro-Worker.”Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the only Republican to vote against the Senate version earlier this month, made the surprise announcement that he would back the legislation. Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has repeatedly warned that the nation’s growing debt is the most serious threat to national security.“I realize this is a bet on our country’s enterprising spirit, and that is a bet I am willing to make,” Corker said. The White House said Trump “looks forward to fulfilling the promise he made to the American people to give them a tax cut by the end of the year.”The bill embodies a longstanding Republican philosophy that a substantial tax break for businesses will trigger economic growth and job creation for Americans in a trickle-down economy.Skeptical Democrats are likely to oppose the legislation unanimously.“Under this bill, the working class, middle class and upper middle class get skewered while the rich and wealthy corporations make out like bandits,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York. “It is just the opposite of what America needs, and Republicans will rue the day they pass this.”The bill would drop today’s 39.6 per cent top rate on individuals to 37 per cent. The standard deduction — used by around two-thirds of households — would be nearly doubled, to $24,000 for married couples. The $1,000-per-child tax deduction would grow to $2,000, with up to $1,400 available in IRS refunds for families who owe little or no taxes. Parents would have to provide children’s Social Security numbers to receive the child tax credit, a measure intended to deny the credit to people who are in the U.S. illegally. Those who itemize would lose some deductions. The deduction that millions use in connection with state and local income, property and sales taxes would be capped at $10,000. That’s especially important to residents of high-tax states such as New York, New Jersey and California. Deductions for medical expenses that lawmakers once considered eliminating would be retained. The bill would allow homeowners to deduct interest only on the first $750,000 of a new mortgage, down from the current limit of $1 million.People who inherit fortunes would get a big break. The bill would double the exemption, meaning the estate tax would apply only to the portion of an estate over $22 million for married couples.Members of a House-Senate conference committee signed the final version of the legislation Friday, sending it to the two chambers for final passage next week. They have been working to blend the different versions passed by the two houses.Republicans hold a slim 52-48 majority in the Senate, including two ailing senators who have missed votes this past week.John McCain of Arizona, who is 81, is at a Washington-area military hospital being treated for the side effects of brain cancer treatment, and 80-year-old Thad Cochran of Mississippi had a non-melanoma lesion removed from his nose earlier this week. GOP leaders are hopeful they will be available next week.last_img read more

FIRs against Amrapali Leisure Valley director for duping several investors

first_imgNew Delhi: Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police on Saturday registered multiple FIRs against Amrapali Leisure Valley Pvt Ltd and its Director Anil Kumar Sharma for cheating multiple investors over the last decade by promising them flats and villas and misappropriating the booking amounts while not delivering the projects.According to one complainant, the accused approached him with a villa project to be constructed in Greater Noida. The accused was selling a villa with parking space to the complainant for a price of Rs 60.5 lakh at a booking amount of Rs 4 lakh. The complainant subsequently transferred the booking amount and signed an allotment/buyer agreement in August 2010. He was promised to get the delivery of the property within 18 months of receiving the booking amount. The complainant eventually had to take a loan of nearly Rs 36 lakh in order to pay the remaining amount for the villa, for which he is still paying interest. According to the complainant, the developer failed to even finish construction of the project. And in addition to this, the developer also charged close to Rs 1 lakh under the pretext of having to pay Noida Authority. In another FIR against the aforementioned accused, the complainant alleged that the developer duped investors by assuring them that they had necessary permissions from concerned authorities for the construction. And based on that, several advertisements were taken out in newspapers, inviting members of the public to invest. Complainants in both FIRs said that company employees and Director Sharma were coy about arranging meetings at the site office after receiving the necessary booking amounts. Even when the complainant from the second FIR went to the Delhi Government Mediation Centre, the accused kept avoiding them. In addition to this, she also alleged that the accused developer has not yet paid outstanding arrears to concerned authorities in as many as three other construction projects in the Greater Noida area. The complainant from the first FIR also alleged that after being handed an unfinished villa, he was further asked to pay Rs 8 lakh to a third party developer for the completion of his property. Both complainants have alleged that the accused have continuously duped multiple investors in such projects and misappropriated crores in the name of collecting booking amounts and paying relevant authorities. A case has been registered u/s 406/420/120B of the IPC against the accused and his accomplices at EOW.last_img read more

Michigan born OSU hockey forward Nick Schilkey wears scarlet and gray close

OSU junior forward Nick Schilkey (7) during a game against Michigan on May. 6 at Nationwide Arena. Credit: Lantern File PhotoOhio State senior forward hockey captain Nick Schilkey wishes he had a dollar for every time he has been asked why he came to OSU from his home state of Michigan. If so, he said he would be as rich as another Buckeye: L Brands owner Les Wexner. The constant questioning will be worth it, however, if Schilkey is successful in his pursuit of a Big Ten championship and the program’s first berth into the NCAA tournament since 2009.  A native of Marysville, Michigan, Schilkey grew up playing in the Detroit area primarily with the nationally recognized HoneyBaked AAA program. It was his parents, Glen and Michelle, along with his other family ties that instilled the love for the game of hockey in him.“My dad always joked that he put me in skates before I could walk.” Schilkey said. His speed and agility — which led him to score 87 goals and assist on 85 others between the ages of 13 and 16 against NHL players Alex Galchenyuk of the Montreal Canadiens and Jacob Trouba of the Winnipeg Jets — caught the attention of OSU.It was not until his final year with HoneyBaked in 2010-11 that he realized college hockey was a legitimate option.“I don’t think I could ever look back at one of those teams and thinking to myself as being one of the best guys because we were so good,” Schilkey said.OSU was the first school to approach Schilkey about furthering his career in hockey. The program’s commitment to Schilkey, facilities and campus life sold him immediately, he said.“I go to different schools around the country and play and nothing beats what we have here,” Schilkey said. “I came down here and the coaches really wanted me to be here and I wanted to be here. This was the spot for me.”Before he moved to Columbus, Schilkey played junior hockey for two years, a common prerequisite for hockey players before beginning their college endeavors. After two seasons with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League, the top junior league in the U.S., Schilkey was ready to showcase his talents at OSU.The team he was recruited by, however, had changed by the time he arrived. In April 2013, OSU coach Mark Osiecki was fired and replaced by Steve Rohlik, who had been an Osiecki assistant.Schilkey was not deterred.“I was comfortable with the coaches because (Rohlik) was here,” Schilkey said. “For me, I didn’t think anything would change too much.”Rohlik recalled the recruitment of Schilkey, who stood out like maize and blue in a sea of scarlet and gray.“When you walked into the rink, you knew who Nick Schilkey was,” Rohlik said. “He’d get that puck and he’d be Mach 10 down the ice. He could score. One thing that always grabbed me is that he wanted it. He wanted the puck, he wanted to be involved, he wanted to be ‘the guy.’ There was no hesitation in his game.”Rohlik has continued to be impressed by Schilkey’s performances weekend after weekend.“You know what you’re getting when he touches the ice,” Rohlik said. “I know if I throw him out there, he’s going to give me everything that he’s got.”And it shows in his production, Rohlik said.In 108 career games, Schilkey has 43 goals and 48 assists. He has been voted team captain twice due to leadership that has rubbed off on his teammates.“Right away freshman year, I noticed that he never quits,” senior defenseman Josh Healey said. “He goes out there every shift and every time in the weight room and goes until he can’t go anymore. It really pushed me to be my best when I was around him … He’s a leader by example and guys follow that, it’s a credit to him.”So far this season, the team has followed him to an upset win over No. 3 Denver last Friday on its home ice, followed by a tie with Air Force the next night. As the Buckeyes head into the heart of the 2016-17 season, Rohlik said there is no one he would trust more to lead the team.“I think it’s in him right now that he wants to do something special before he leaves here,” Rohlik said. “He’s already had such a huge impact on this program, not only by being a great player, but by being a great person. I can’t say enough about him. He’s one of those guys, as a coach, you love having him in your program.” As for Schilkey, the legacy he wants to leave behind is a championship in his home state. The conference tournament will be hosted at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit for the final time in March.“To get this team back there and obviously it’s going to take a lot of leaders in the room, it’s going to take the team to accomplish that goal,” Schilkey said. “I think we’re excited for it. I think we’re confident in that this is one of the best opportunities we’ve had in my four years here. To leave on top is something everybody wants to do.”Ranked No. 19 in the latest uscho.com poll, Schilkey and the Buckeyes head to Oxford, Ohio, on Saturday to take on in-state rival Miami at Goggin Ice Center with the puck drop scheduled for 8:05 p.m. read more

Redemption not revenge on Ohio States mind ahead of Virginia Tech

“There is a little nudge around here because they beat us, and really the way they beat us,” he said. “Offensively right now there is a lot of distaste for the way that thing happened.”In last year’s meeting between the schools, OSU was decimated by the talent of the Virginia Tech defense. Then-redshirt freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett, making the second start of his collegiate career, completed just nine of 23 passes and was sacked seven times. He also threw three interceptions, including two by then-senior safety Kyshoen Jarrett and a late 63-yard pick-six by then-junior safety Donovan Riley.Powell said a big reason for the Buckeyes being unprepared for Virginia Tech last year was their season opener the weekend before against Navy. The safety said the Midshipmen, a team known for running the triple option on nearly every play, forced the Buckeyes to spend their entire practice time preparing for that untraditional offense rather than a more typical one used by teams like Virginia Tech.“Last year we spent a lot of time trying to master that triple option offense. It was really difficult to go from that then jump straight to a regular spread offense,” Powell said. “It’s good to finally just focus on one thing and that’s kind of what we’re going to see all year, instead of focus on one thing for one game that we’re never going to see again.”Schutt added that with no Navy game ahead of Virginia Tech in 2015, he expects the team to be better adjusted and then some, when the extra motivation is factored in.“For this game specifically, I think we put in more than we would for a normal game just because of what happened last year,” Schutt said. “We felt unprepared last year coming into that game, both offensively and defensively, and this year we’ve been working on this game plan all summer and are excited about next week.”OSU’s rematch with Virginia Tech is scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff on Monday in Blacksburg, Virginia. Then-redshirt freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett (16) lies on the ground after being tackled during a game against Virginia Tech Sept. 6 at Ohio Stadium. OSU lost, 35-21. Credit: Lantern File PhotoOhio State might have won the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship in 2014, but the one thing the team cannot hang its hat on is a perfect season. While the Buckeyes won 13 straight games to end the season, a 35-21 defeat at home to Virginia Tech on Sept. 6 put an early but permanent mark in their loss column. Now, 366 days after the upset loss, OSU is set to have a chance to return the favor to the Hokies on their home field of Lane Stadium.“Due to the fact that we did lose to them last year … that’s something that we can’t get back at them, because although we won it all last year, still in our loss column there was a ‘one’ in there, and they’re the ones that unfortunately gave it to us,” redshirt junior safety Tyvis Powell said. “So it’s just about going out there and making sure that doesn’t happen again.”While members of the team said they vividly remember the 2014 matchup and have been studying tapes from that game for weeks, senior defensive lineman Tommy Schutt said the extra motivation the team feels is not completely revenge-based.“I wouldn’t necessarily call it revenge, but it’s something that’s been in the back of our heads since that game,” he said. “I think we definitely have a little extra chip on our shoulders knowing what happened last year, how we finished the season last year knowing they were the one team that was able to beat us, so we definitely have a little extra chip on our shoulder going into this one.”OSU coach Urban Meyer echoed his players’ sentiments and said Monday’s game is one the Buckeyes have been looking forward to for a long time. read more
