North Torrance’s Kyle Cryer already had established himself as a standout receiver, but he opened eyes with a prolific performance Thursday night at Redondo. Cryer rushed an eye-popping 44 times and gained 244 yards. He scored one touchdown and had three runs of 20 or more yards, including a long of 27 yards. “I knew he had numbers like that in him in an all-purpose role, but I would have been surprised if you told me he’d have that many rushing yards, considering he’s a receiver,” North coach Todd Croce said. Cryer had more than 200 receiving yards in Week 1. He moved to the backfield to help North try to snap a winless streak that has reached three games. Cryer didn’t care about his rushing totals. “We’re just trying to piece together a season,” he said. “We’ve got five guys up front and that’s all we’ve got.” Calling in reinforcements With a rising number of premier local cross country teams bolting from the South Bay Cup, Torrance coach Israel Pose knew he needed to make a drastic change. So he called in Saugus, the No. 2 girls team in CIF Division I, to add legitimacy to the meet. Look for an intense Saugus-Mira Costa showdown on the girls side. “Maybe getting Saugus will spark an interest,” Pose said. We’ve got a lot of good teams in the South Bay, but there’s coaches who don’t bring their teams to this meet, and it’s discouraging,” Pose said. The South Bay Cup is expected to have 15 teams, including Torrance, West Torrance, South Torrance, Mira Costa, North Torrance, Leuzinger and San Pedro. Saugus is coached by Rene Paragas, a former El Camino College runner who has known Pose for years. “Rene asks me every year if he could compete,” Pose said. “I always told him no before, but maybe we need to start bringing in some outsiders. Loyola and Lakewood have asked about this meet in the past.” The Hill has no love for this event. Peninsula, Palos Verdes and Chadwick opted not to run in this year’s version of the South Bay Cup. Redondo is expected to use its lower-level runners. Rain follies Friday’s rainy football games yielded an interesting statistic. There were seven safeties in the 10 games involving local teams. St. Bernard recorded a safety against Palos Verdes, Inglewood gave up one up in its game at San Clemente, Morningside got one against Animo, Westchester allowed two in its game with Washington and El Segundo and Mary Star each had one in its matchup at El Segundo. “I think any time you get the first rains of a season, the kids aren’t used to it, the fields aren’t ready for it and there’s a learning curve that goes with playing in wet weather,” El Segundo coach Steve Shevlin said. Shevlin said El Segundo’s field is in particularly poor shape and is not equipped to handle the wear and tear the teams put on it en route to a strange final score. El Segundo won the game, 11-2. “I’m sure it was a pretty interesting score to look at,” Mary Star coach Dino Andrie said. Close, but still, a cigar Palos Verdes girls volleyball coach Pinter Aguirre had a good reason for missing Tuesday’s match against Torrance. Aguirre informed Athletic Director Mike Boyd that he would not be attending the match so that he could be with his wife, Melissa, during the birth of their son, Connor James. The 6-pound, 12-ounce, 20-inch baby was born at 8:03 p.m. Tuesday. Palos Verdes captain Joanna Bahl called Aguirre to inform him of the team’s five-game loss to Torrance shortly after Connor was born, but her reason for calling wasn’t strictly volleyball-related. “She wanted to talk about the birth first and the match second,” Aguirre said. Quick ascension Redondo’s Hayward Gray was No. 3 on the Redondo depth chart as a junior, but this year he might be one of the quickest running backs in the South Bay. Gray rushed 26 times for 288 yards Thursday against North. He has the benefit of fullback Joe Rubio, who rushed 12 times for 55 yards. “We work well together,” Gray said. “He hits the hole and I come up behind him. I think it’s a good combination.” Linsky commits Peninsula baseball coach Dennis Gonsalves said that right-handed pitcher Lenny Linsky has made a verbal commitment to play at the University of Hawaii. – John Klima, David Saunders, Tony Ciniglio160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Torrance High will retire the uniform number of the late Kim Blankinship as the highlight of a girls volleyball tripleheader on Saturday at Torrance. Blankinship, the most decorated female athlete in Tartars history with 12 varsity letters, died unexpectedly at age 31 last October. She was a first-team All-CIF selection for two years in volleyball, soccer and track. The Tartars will retire the No. 14 jersey that she wore in both volleyball and soccer following the 5 p.m. Redondo-North Torrance match and prior to the 7:30 South Torrance-Torrance match at the Torrance Challenge. “She was everything right about Torrance,” Torrance girls volleyball coach Nathan Jones said. “We’ve had big athletes come through here. Louis Zamperini has the track stadium named after him. Fred and Jason Kendall have the baseball field named after them. We thought it was appropriate to honor Kim in this fashion.” Jones said Blankinship’s parents are expected to attend the uniform retirement ceremony along with several family members. The showcase kicks off with a West Torrance-El Segundo match at 3 p.m. The Redondo-North showdown follows and Torrance closes out with South Torrance in a Pioneer League match. Tickets for the full day cost a minimum $5 donation, and the proceeds will go to the Kim Blankinship Memorial Fund. “I’m pretty sure I’m going to be wiping away tears as we go down to play our match,” Jones said. “The Blankinships are such nice people.” Cryer in the rain
15 May 2009The Eastern Cape government has held talks with domestic airline Airlink about the possibility of introducing flights between Cape Town, Bhisho and Mthatha.“There is a huge opportunity for us here, and any Airlink aircraft can land here,” Airlink chief operations officer Johan van Jaarsveld said in Bhisho this week, adding that the newly refurbished Bhisho Airport infrastructure met the airline’s requirements.“We will send an operations team to do an audit of operational facilities,” he said. The company has also asked the provincial transport department to upgrade its infrastructure at the Mthatha Airport in order to allow for an evening flight between Johannesburg and Mthatha.According to a statement released by the provincial government this week, the parties agreed that while waiting for the physical upgrade at Mthatha Airport to start by July 2009, the runway lights needed urgent attention.Blue SkywayThe initiative forms part of the department’s Blue Skyway Aviation Strategy, which seeks to attract investment to the Bhisho and Mthatha Airports. The department intends to have a second airline between Mthatha and Johannesburg, including an evening flight, while a future link to Durban from Mthatha is envisaged as soon as the correct type of service is developed. The provincial government also aims to link Port Elizabeth to Mthatha via Bhisho to allow faster movement between these three areas and to reduce the number of government vehicles on these routes.Wild Coast accessThis aim is also to boost tourism in the region by improving access to the Wild Coast, a popular tourist destination. The airport will also contribute to local business development, with people coming directly to Mthatha instead of having to fly to East London and then drive for three hours.“Our doors are wide open for any investor that wants to come forward and add value to this project,” said provincial transport minister Gloria Barry.SAinfo reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? No problems there,” said Federer, who did not face a break point. “I’m not worried about it.”The state of the 36-year-old Federer’s physical condition has been a talking point throughout the tournament, because he tweaked his back during a match in August, interrupting his preparation for Flushing Meadows. Federer said he was worried about his movement in his first-round match against 19-year-old American Frances Tiafoe, then had timing issues in his second-rounder against 35-year-old Russian Mikhail Youzhny — and both of those contests went five sets.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSSEA Games: Biñan football stadium stands out in preparedness, completionSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSBoxers Pacquiao, Petecio torchbearers for SEA Games openingOn the bright side, the 19-time major champion also spent some time drawing a crowd by hitting in Central Park and has put together two straight-set wins in a row against opponents in their 30s.“I went from Tiafoe, then to the oldies, so that was good,” Federer joked. “Yeah, back to the ’80s.” That has had an effect on his two-handed backhand, to be sure, but the righty swing that produces massive forehands and serves is still intact — as Federer himself noted at his news conference and on Twitter. That was clear as del Potro shook off the effects of a fever and erased two set points while coming back from a big deficit to eliminated No. 6 Dominic Thiem 1-6, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1), 6-4.When a reporter relayed to del Potro that Federer had spoken glowingly about him, del Potro responded: “Well, of course, I admire him, too. Senior Medical Officer at the National Chest Hospital, Dr. Terry Baker, is urging persons who have been exposed to cigarette smoke over an extended period to look out for signs of lung cancer.Speaking in an interview with JIS News, Dr. Baker, who is a pulmonologist and internist, pointed out that the disease may present itself in myriad ways, and early signs may often be attributed to other conditions.“The person may have a cough, or they may begin to cough up phlegm or mucous that has changed in colour or consistency, or they may begin to cough up blood. They may have chest pain or consistent hoarseness,” she said. She, however, warned that persons may have pain in other parts of the body, such as arthritis. “This is a particular arthritis or inflammation that we see affecting the bones and joints in persons who have lung cancer. The bones and joints may become swollen and very tender.“The cancer may spread to other organs, to the brain (the person may have severe headaches, personality changes or seizures), to the spine or to the bone. You may also have collapse of the spine,” she explained.Dr. Baker pointed out that because there are no early signs or definitive signs that point to an ailment being lung cancer, one has to have a high index of suspicion when somebody presents with particular complaints.“When it becomes clinically apparent, and the person begins to feel sick, is usually when the cancer has been present within the body for quite a while and has now spread or invaded other structures,” she said.“Cancer cells can stay in the lung and multiply, divide and become larger and they stay there for quite a while before the person becomes ill, and that is part of the difficulty with lung cancer. While we recognise and applaud the advances made in terms of treating lung cancer, the five-year survival is very low,” Dr. Baker added.Dr. Baker was, however, quick to assure that having advanced disease does not mean that it will not be treated.“We may not be able to cure, but we will still treat and endeavour to arrest the spread of the growth of the cancer and help the person in terms of overcoming whatever complications they may have due to the presence of the cancer, and generally help them to feel better and to better manage in terms of other issues or complications that may arise,” she explained.Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, with more than breast, prostate and colon cancer combined.Cigarette smoking is associated with a number of other cancers, including cancers of the tongue, breast, cervix, stomach and colon as well as heart disease.National Chest Hospital is the only specialist hospital in the island that specifically treats patients with chest-related illnesses. The month of November is observed worldwide as Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
WASHINGTON – After weeks of quarrels, qualms and then eleventh-hour horse-trading, Republicans revealed the details of their huge national tax rewrite late Friday — along with announcements of support that all but guarantee approval to give President Donald Trump the Christmas legislative triumph he’s been aching for.The legislation would slash tax rates for big business and lower levies on the richest Americans in a massive $1.5 trillion bill that the GOP plans to muscle through Congress next week before its year-end break. Benefits for most other taxpayers would be smaller.“This is happening. Tax reform under Republican control of Washington is happening,” House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin told rank-and-file members in a conference call. “Most critics out there didn’t think it could happen. … And now we’re on the doorstep of something truly historic.”According to the 1,097-page bill released late Friday, today’s 35 per cent rate on corporations would fall to 21 per cent, the crown jewel of the measure for many Republicans. Trump and GOP leaders had set 20 per cent as their goal, but added a point to free money for other tax cuts that won over wavering lawmakers in final talks. The legislation represents the first major legislative achievement for the GOP after nearly a full year in control of Congress and the White House. It’s the widest-ranging reshaping of the tax code in three decades and is expected to add to the nation’s $20 trillion debt. The tax cuts are projected to add $1.46 trillion over a decade. The bill would repeal an important part of President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act — the requirement that all Americans have health insurance or face a penalty — as the GOP looks to unravel a law it failed to repeal and replace this past summer.Only on Friday did Republicans cement the needed support for the overhaul, securing endorsements from wavering senators.Marco Rubio of Florida relented in his high-profile opposition after negotiators expanded the tax credit that parents can claim for their children. He said he would vote for the measure next week.Rubio had been holding out for a bigger child credit for low-income families. After he got it, he tweeted that the change was “a solid step toward broader reforms which are both Pro-Growth and Pro-Worker.”Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the only Republican to vote against the Senate version earlier this month, made the surprise announcement that he would back the legislation. Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has repeatedly warned that the nation’s growing debt is the most serious threat to national security.“I realize this is a bet on our country’s enterprising spirit, and that is a bet I am willing to make,” Corker said. The White House said Trump “looks forward to fulfilling the promise he made to the American people to give them a tax cut by the end of the year.”The bill embodies a longstanding Republican philosophy that a substantial tax break for businesses will trigger economic growth and job creation for Americans in a trickle-down economy.Skeptical Democrats are likely to oppose the legislation unanimously.“Under this bill, the working class, middle class and upper middle class get skewered while the rich and wealthy corporations make out like bandits,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York. “It is just the opposite of what America needs, and Republicans will rue the day they pass this.”The bill would drop today’s 39.6 per cent top rate on individuals to 37 per cent. The standard deduction — used by around two-thirds of households — would be nearly doubled, to $24,000 for married couples. The $1,000-per-child tax deduction would grow to $2,000, with up to $1,400 available in IRS refunds for families who owe little or no taxes. Parents would have to provide children’s Social Security numbers to receive the child tax credit, a measure intended to deny the credit to people who are in the U.S. illegally. Those who itemize would lose some deductions. The deduction that millions use in connection with state and local income, property and sales taxes would be capped at $10,000. That’s especially important to residents of high-tax states such as New York, New Jersey and California. Deductions for medical expenses that lawmakers once considered eliminating would be retained. The bill would allow homeowners to deduct interest only on the first $750,000 of a new mortgage, down from the current limit of $1 million.People who inherit fortunes would get a big break. The bill would double the exemption, meaning the estate tax would apply only to the portion of an estate over $22 million for married couples.Members of a House-Senate conference committee signed the final version of the legislation Friday, sending it to the two chambers for final passage next week. They have been working to blend the different versions passed by the two houses.Republicans hold a slim 52-48 majority in the Senate, including two ailing senators who have missed votes this past week.John McCain of Arizona, who is 81, is at a Washington-area military hospital being treated for the side effects of brain cancer treatment, and 80-year-old Thad Cochran of Mississippi had a non-melanoma lesion removed from his nose earlier this week. GOP leaders are hopeful they will be available next week.
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Prosecutors in New York City abandoned part of their sexual assault case against Harvey Weinstein on Thursday after evidence surfaced that a lead police detective coached a witness to keep quiet when she raised doubts about the veracity of one of the allegations.Weinstein, 66, looked on as a judge agreed to dismiss the lone charge related to Lucia Evans, who helped spark the #MeToo movement a year ago when she told The New Yorker that the Hollywood mogul had forced her to perform oral sex in 2004 when she was a college student and fledgling actress.Weinstein’s lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, unsuccessfully urged Judge James Burke to deep-six the whole case, telling him: “The integrity of these proceedings has been compromised.”The bulk of the prosecution case remains intact, with Weinstein still facing five charges over allegations that he raped an unidentified woman in his Manhattan hotel room in 2013 and performed a forcible sex act on a different woman in 2006. A conviction on the most serious charges could put him in prison for the rest of his life.Weinstein denies all allegations of nonconsensual sex.The turn of events, which had been simmering for weeks in closed-door meetings and sealed court documents, enraged Evans’ lawyer, who took to the courthouse steps to blast Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. for walking away from her client. Evans told the truth and never misled investigators, lawyer Carrie Goldberg said.“Let me be clear: the decision to throw away my client’s sexual assault charges says nothing about Weinstein’s guilt or innocence. Nor does it reflect on Lucia’s consistent allegation that she was sexually assaulted with force by Harvey Weinstein,” Goldberg said outside the courthouse. “It only speaks volumes about the Manhattan DA’s office and its mishandling of my client’s case.”Prosecutor Joan Illuzzi-Orbon insisted in court that the rest of the case is strong and said the district attorney’s office was looking into the possibility of bringing additional charges.“In short, your honour, we are moving full steam ahead,” she said.Det. Nicholas DiGaudio, who was one of two investigators who escorted Weinstein out of a police station and into court after his May arrest, is now embroiled in an internal police department investigation and has been thrown off the case. Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said Thursday that the department takes seriously the allegations against him.Prosecutors said in a letter unsealed after Thursday’s hearing that they learned weeks ago that a woman who was with Evans the night she first met Weinstein at a restaurant had given DiGaudio a contradictory account of what happened, but that the detective had urged her to keep quiet, telling her “less is more.”The woman, prosecutors said, told the detective in February that Weinstein had offered them money to flash their breasts during the restaurant encounter. They initially declined, but the woman said that Evans later told her she had gone ahead and exposed herself to the film producer in a hallway. Goldberg disputed that. The woman also told the detective that sometime after an office meeting where Evans alleged Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex, she suggested what happened was consensual, according to the letter. Weinstein had promised to get her an acting job if she agreed to perform oral sex, and she agreed, it said.According to the witness, who was not named in the letter, Evans had been drinking and “appeared to be upset, embarrassed and shaking” when she recounted the story.Prosecutors also disclosed that they had discovered a draft email that Evans had written three years ago to a man who is now her husband that “describes details of the sexual assault that differ from the account” she provided to investigators.A message left on a phone DiGaudio used in the past wasn’t returned. The union for New York City police detectives didn’t return a message.Brafman said he believed Evans had lied both to the grand jury and to The New Yorker about her encounter with Weinstein and suggested she be prosecuted for perjury.“This is an attack on the fundamental integrity of the grand jury process,” Brafman said. “If you have a person willing to commit perjury in the grand jury, that is as serious as the crime of sexual assault because it undermines the fairness of the process for all of us.”Goldberg said Evans told the grand jury the truth.“The DA is aware of robust evidence, including witnesses, that seriously undermine the witness’ credibility and recollection of events. Yet, the DA consented to dismissal prior to investigating this evidence,” she wrote on Twitter. The developments in Weinstein’s case on Thursday capped a tough six-day stretch for the #MeToo movement, bookended by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation amid decades-old allegations that he had committed sexual misconduct. But victim advocates didn’t see it as a setback.“This is so much larger than any singular case,” Kristen Houser of the National Sexual Violence Resource Center said. “Weinstein may have been the snowball that started the avalanche, but the ability of any one perpetrator being held accountable or getting away with it doesn’t alter the national outrage.”The New Yorker, in a statement, said it stands by its reporting and fact-checking process and that “any assertion by lawyers for Harvey Weinstein that The New Yorker had information that contradicted Lucia Evans’s account is patently incorrect.”Vance has already been fiercely criticized for declining to prosecute Weinstein when an Italian model accused him of grabbing her breasts in 2015. At the time, Vance cited a lack of supporting evidence, despite the existence of a clandestinely made recording of Weinstein discussing the episode with the woman. In the months after The New York Times and The New Yorker began publishing stories about Weinstein’s interactions with women, activists pressured Vance to bring charges as dozens of people came forward with claims of sexual misconduct against him.DiGaudio and other police officials poured on the pressure, saying publicly that they believed they had gathered ample evidence to make an arrest. The Associated Press does not identify alleged victims of sexual assaults unless they come forward publicly, as Evans has done.Weinstein is free on $1 million bail and is due back in court Dec. 20.__Follow Sisak at https://twitter.com/mikesisak and Hays at https://twitter.com/APtomhays

New Delhi: Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police on Saturday registered multiple FIRs against Amrapali Leisure Valley Pvt Ltd and its Director Anil Kumar Sharma for cheating multiple investors over the last decade by promising them flats and villas and misappropriating the booking amounts while not delivering the projects.According to one complainant, the accused approached him with a villa project to be constructed in Greater Noida. The accused was selling a villa with parking space to the complainant for a price of Rs 60.5 lakh at a booking amount of Rs 4 lakh. The complainant subsequently transferred the booking amount and signed an allotment/buyer agreement in August 2010. He was promised to get the delivery of the property within 18 months of receiving the booking amount. The complainant eventually had to take a loan of nearly Rs 36 lakh in order to pay the remaining amount for the villa, for which he is still paying interest. According to the complainant, the developer failed to even finish construction of the project. And in addition to this, the developer also charged close to Rs 1 lakh under the pretext of having to pay Noida Authority. In another FIR against the aforementioned accused, the complainant alleged that the developer duped investors by assuring them that they had necessary permissions from concerned authorities for the construction. And based on that, several advertisements were taken out in newspapers, inviting members of the public to invest. Complainants in both FIRs said that company employees and Director Sharma were coy about arranging meetings at the site office after receiving the necessary booking amounts. Even when the complainant from the second FIR went to the Delhi Government Mediation Centre, the accused kept avoiding them. In addition to this, she also alleged that the accused developer has not yet paid outstanding arrears to concerned authorities in as many as three other construction projects in the Greater Noida area. The complainant from the first FIR also alleged that after being handed an unfinished villa, he was further asked to pay Rs 8 lakh to a third party developer for the completion of his property. Both complainants have alleged that the accused have continuously duped multiple investors in such projects and misappropriated crores in the name of collecting booking amounts and paying relevant authorities. A case has been registered u/s 406/420/120B of the IPC against the accused and his accomplices at EOW.
Kushinagar/Deoria: As campaigning for Lok Sabha polls entered its final phase, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday predicted the defeat of the opposition parties, saying the people were voting for an effective government. “Opposition parties will fall flat in polls. This is because people are voting for an effective and honest government,” he said at an election rally in Kushinagar and later in Deoria in eastern UP which go to polls in the last phase on May 19. I never indulge in caste politics and by your blessings, it was never needed. But when they are demanding a certificate, I tell them that I may have been born in an extremely backward caste, but my dream is to make India a frontrunner (in the world). And with the blessings of the poor, I have got the opportunity to serve the country,” Modi said. “I held the post of chief minister of Gujarat for a long time and the post of prime minister has been given by you. But neither I nor my family ever misused the post or the power. I have been CM for a longer time when compared to the combined stint of ‘bua’ (Mayawati) and ‘babua’ (Akhilesh Yadav),” he said. Modi said he never transformed the poverty of his family to richness. “The post of power was used to serve the poor and work for their welfare and interest. Those who are demanding my caste certificate, they have accumulated wealth and property for themselves when they were in power. “I have been the CM of Gujarat and prime minister for five years and my record is an open book, which is in front of the entire country,” he said. Hitting out at BSP chief Mayawati for her remarks on the Alwar gangrape case, the prime minister asked her “not to shed crocodile tears” for the victim. “If you are serious, why don’t you withdraw support from the Congress government in Rajasthan,” he asked. Even the Congress government wanted to suppress the incident involving a Dalit woman, he said, adding that the party thought “hua toh hua”, a reference to Sam Pitroda’s remark on 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Hitting out at the opposition, Modi said, “The biggest example of how the ‘mahamilawat’ of SP-BSP-Congress actually works is Rajasthan. “A Dalit daughter was gang-raped and there is the government of Congress and ‘naamdaar’. And the Rajasthan government is not a government which enjoys full majority. It is working with the support of BSP. It is busy in hushing up the matter.” Intensifying his attack on the Congress, he said, “The Congress which chants nyay, nyay, nyay, its naamdaar has been silenced by the rapists. Today, the daughters of UP are asking Behenji (Mayawati), and Behanji you have to answer why you have not withdrawn your support to the Congress government (in Rajasthan). You are shedding crocodile tears by only indulging in issuing statements. “When the (Lucknow) guest house incident happened, the entire country was pained. What is the reason that you are not feeling pained. If you are so honest about the dignity of the daughters, then you should immediately write a letter to the Rajasthan Governor and withdraw your support from the Congress government,” he said. “To punish those who commit crime on women, this chowkidaar of yours had made provisions for the capital punishment. If the intention of the Congress government was right, it would not have suppressed the Alwar incident, but they have only one answer ‘hua toh hua’. Be it corruption, price rise or the 1984 anti-Sikh genocide, their answer is ‘hua toh hua’,” he said. Referring to the encounter in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir Sunday morning, Modi wondered, “Will our jawans take EC’s permission before opening fire at militants? Opposition ne kya khel bana rakha hai? (What drama is the opposition enacting).” In both Kushinagar and Deoria, he said it was surprising that opposition parties were saying that elections were on and the security forces were opening fire on militants. “In the morning when reports and news come, I learn that terrorists have been gunned down in Kashmir. Now some people are perturbed over the fact that when polling is going on today, then why did Modi kill the terrorists? They (terrorists) are standing with guns toting, will my jawan go to seek the permission of the Election Commission whether I should fire at the terrorist or not. “Since, we have come to power every second-third day, terrorists are killed. This safai abhiyaan is my work,” he said. Seeking votes, he said it was time to make the victory historic in such a way that the ‘mahamilawat’ (grand adulterated) people stop thinking about facing the people in future. He also said, “They are unable to understand why the people of the country are showering their love on the chowkidaar… It is for the fight against terror that the country is voting for the BJP and Modi. Those who used to threaten India have fallen flat, they are feeling afraid.” Modi said the SP and the BSP were incapable of taking on terrorists. About the Congress, he said, “Congress ne pahley jawan ka sar katwaya (jawan was beheaded during Cong rule), now the party has become ‘vote katwa’ (vote cutter).
OSU redshirt freshman quarterback Joe Burrow (10) hands the ball off during the spring game on April 16 at Ohio Stadium. Credit: Lantern File PhotoIn 2015, redshirt junior Cardale Jones and then-redshirt sophomore J.T. Barrett were firmly No. 1 and No. 2 on the depth chart at quarterback. It was a matter of who would win the job. But there was another quarterback behind them. Enter sophomore Joe Burrow who is now the most likely among potential candidates to serve as backup to starting quarterback Barrett this season. In the spring, the race appeared to be a much more tightly contested battle between Burrow and redshirt junior Stephen Collier. But a season-ending ACL tear to Collier gave Burrow his opportunity in the spring game.In his first action with the Buckeyes, Burrow led the Gray team to victory while impressing the crowd of 100,000-plus with 196 passing yards for three touchdowns.“I took a big step this spring,” Burrow said following the spring game. “And I’m going to have to take a big one before fall camp.”Freshman quarterback Dwayne Haskins arrived on campus in June for the summer to battle for the No. 2 quarterback spot behind redshirt junior quarterback J.T. Barrett. At least in the eyes of quarterback coach and co-offensive coordinator Tim Beck, Burrow is viewed as the favorite.“That battle is moving along,” Beck said. “I think Joe is ahead because of his experience. I’m really pleased by his development right now.”Coach Urban Meyer knows better than anyone that a consistent backup quarterback is a vital piece in the team’s success. In Meyer’s first season with OSU in 2012, then-quarterback Braxton Miller went down with a shoulder injury in a home game against Purdue. Backup Kenny Guiton stepped in to deliver an improbable come-from-behind victory to preserve an undefeated season. In 2014, Barrett took over the starting role just a couple weeks before the first game when Miller reinjured his shoulder. Barrett racked up the Big Ten offensive player of the year accolade and then was replaced by Jones who led the team the rest of the way to a national title. The No. 2 quarterback must constantly be prepared to enter into the game and perform at an adequate level once called upon or his team could suffer for it. At the moment, Burrow said he’s still making strides to get to that level.“The backup’s job is to be ready at any moment, and if I’m not ready then I’m not doing my job,” Burrow said. “I’m not ready yet.”There are many things a quarterback must do to prepare for this situation. As Burrow has noted, it is important that to be ready, he must put in “more reps, more studying, just everything” to be sure he is ready to get in the game should he receive the call.“After spring, I still had a lot to prove and I still have a lot to get better,” Burrow. “I think it was like the second scrimmage in the spring when I threw three or four touchdowns. That’s when I knew I could play here and play here at a high level.”A big part of his preparation process is to learn from the veterans on the team. That starts with taking notes from Barrett.“(Barrett’s) really understanding and he’s a really smart guy,” Burrow said. “How he goes about the game, how he watches film, how he takes notes, how he reads the defense.”Of course as exciting as Barrett is, many have been waiting to see what the new guy brings to the table. 247sports.com ranked the four-star Burrow 305th best of all class of 2015 prospects and 14th best in the state of Ohio. Of course, acquiring the nickname “Mr. Football” in the state of Ohio has done little to lessen the excitement. But despite all the hype from evaluators, he has somehow flown under the radar. To Burrow, this has not been a hinderance, but rather something to help his performance.“From the start in high school recruiting, I was under the radar from Athens, Ohio,” Burrow said. “That’s how I kind of played my entire career. I played with a chip on my shoulder.”From a scouting perspective, Burrow is not the typical college-style quarterback. Instead of a dual threat like Barrett, Burrow has been described as a ‘Pro-Style Quarterback’ by 247sports, and most evaluators agree that his legs are not as much of a threat as most other college signal-callers.This is further enhanced by his stats from high school. Between 2012 and 2013, Burrow accumulated 94 touchdowns and 6,971 yards while completing 420 passes in 631 attempts. In that time span, Burrow attempted 262 rushing attempts and racked up 1,425 rushing yards, an average of 5.44 yards per carry, a modest average for most high school quarterbacks. “No, I can’t be a run-first guy,” Burrow said. “I could break one for maybe 15 or 20, but I won’t break one for 40, 50 or 60. I can be effective, but I can’t break a big one.”Burrow and the rest of the OSU football team will take on Bowling Green on Sept. 3 at noon.
When a professional sports team in America has a bad season, as the old saying goes, there’s always next season – but not in European soccer. End-of-season discussions around some European professional soccer leagues are about survival. Mainly, which teams are going to survive to play another year in a given country’s top league. The English Premier League, the world’s most prominent soccer league, is among those leagues where suspense almost always carries into the final minutes of the season. The EPL has a stipulation in place that relegates or downgrades its bottom three teams in any one season to the Football Association’s Championship division. In return, the top three teams of the Championship are promoted to the Premier League. Conceptually, it would be like the Columbus Clippers having the best record in Triple-A baseball and then moving up to play Major League Baseball the following season. And the same goes for the Championship, as well as the two divisions below it – the FA’s League One and League Two. The top and bottom three teams from each of England’s four divisions shuffle back and forth season after season. With its season concluding on Sunday, this year’s EPL relegated teams are Wolverhampton F.C., Blackburn F.C. and Bolton F.C. No club is safe from the relegation rule as Blackburn (1995 EPL Champions) becomes the first former Premier League champion to be relegated. How harsh is that? 17 years removed from a championship and you’re deemed not good enough to compete in the league. Harsh or not, the rule is ingenious on some levels. It creates a level playing field and makes every game in a season matter. There certainly isn’t any talk of “tanking” game in the Premier League for any reason. So, what if American sports leagues adopted its European counterparts relegation and promotion rules? Would it be a good thing? Is it even possible? Would the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats have lost 23 games in a row to end the season? Whether it would be good for leagues like the NFL, MLB, NBA and the NHL to adopt the relegation-promotion rule is purely subjective. It would be good in the sense teams likely wouldn’t tank, and every regular-season game matters, but at what cost? Would the playoffs have to be eliminated? The EPL crowns its champion based solely on regular season performance. If there were no Super Bowl or World Series, would that be a good thing? The question of whether it’s even possible to have a relegation-promotion rule in American professional sports is interesting. As it stands now, only two of the top four leagues have the type of minor-league system in place to piggyback off the system used English soccer. The NHL has the American Hockey League (AHL) below it as an incremental level and MLB has Triple-A baseball with the International League and Pacific Coast League. Even then, those leagues would need adjustment. The NHL or MLB teams couldn’t have ties to the AHL or Triple-A teams as they do now using the lower level teams as a means of producing players within a farm system. The Premier League’s relegation and promotion rule is something American sports fans envy, and although some fans wish it would be adopted tomorrow by America’s sports leagues, it’s not a simple as it may seem.
Cristiano Ronaldo is expecting a difficult time against Spain in Portugal’s opening game in the World Cup, but he is determined to avoid defeat in what he feels could potentially spoil their campaignThe defending European champions are being considered only the eighth favourites to claim glory at Russia this summer and will begin their campaign in a tricky encounter against the 2010 winners Spain.Ronaldo, who has enjoyed a trophy-laden career at club level, knows all about winning at the highest level and he warned Portugal that defeat on the first day could very well set them back.“A defeat on the first day puts you in a bad way for the rest of the tournament so it’s important to start well,” said the captain, according to Goal.Fiorentina owner: “Ribery played better than Ronaldo!” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso was left gushing over Franck Ribery’s performance against Juventus, which he rates above that of even Cristiano Ronaldo’s.“But I believe both Spain and Portugal will reach the next round.”But the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is refusing to discount his team’s chances and made reference to their Euro 2016 triumph.Like now, the Selecao were considered outsiders for glory in France but they still managed to fight their way through to the final and lift the trophy.“To win the World Cup would be a dream for Portugal but to do it we have to play the same way we did in Euro 2016, as a team and all together,” added Ronaldo.
Mundial host Russia has beaten all the nations it has played against but progress for them to the World Cup last-16 is the victory the country deserves, the country’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Thursday via FourFourTwo.Russia won their opening two matches at the tournament, humiliating Saudi Arabia with five goals and thrashing Egypt 3-1, to secure them a slot in the latter stages of the competition for the first time since the break-up of the Soviet Union.Scotland needs a hero: Billy Dodds Manuel R. Medina – September 10, 2019 According to former striker, Billy Dodds his country needs a hero to inspire future generations as the team’s hope to qualify to the EURO 2020 is small.“Our win, of course, is pleasing. This is huge. It is a great event for the country, because we deserve victories as we have done a lot for this. Because the country has built a large number of stadiums in such a short period of time. These are beautiful, stunning buildings,” Shoigu told journalists. He added that football was a great game, which unites those who love sports and their country and those “who value normal relations between other countries, states and peoples.”
Former Arsenal football club goalkeeper David Seaman insists the club’s new signing Bernd Leno has to be patient as Petr Cech continues to remain the first choice option. The former Bayer Leverkusen shot-stopper joined the Gunners this summer for a fee believed to be around £22.5million but is yet to feature in a competitive game for the club so far.Leno is a German international but Seaman – who played more than 400 times for Arsenal in a glittering 13 years at the club – said: ‘Just because he cost a lot of money does not mean he goes straight into the team.“He has to be patient. Petr Cech has done nothing wrong in goal.” Seaman said, according to Daily Mail.“Ok, so he is adjusting to playing with the ball from the box. But he has been able to contribute to the team and has done nothing to cause him to be left out.”Tony Cascarino names Bernd Leno as Arsenal’s weak spot Andrew Smyth – August 3, 2019 Tony Cascarino suggested that Arsenal might’ve been better off signing a new goalkeeper after identifying Bernd Leno as their weak spot.Seaman believes a spell in a more observational role will benefit Leno as he watches at first hand the demands of the Premier League.“This could be a learning curve for him. You have to be patient in football… I know. I had to be in the past when I was playing. Leno has to bide his time.”With the introduction of Cup games coming up in both the Carabao Cup and UEFA Europa League, Leno will be confident of making his Arsenal bow soon enough.
Newcastle’s boss Rafa Benitez has written off claims they are missing the services of Aleksandr Mitrovic who moved to Fulham in the summer transfer window. The sale of Mitrovic for £22.5m in the summer angered some sections of the fans but Benitez is adamant, insisting he would not have scored as many goals if he had remained at Newcastle.Asked if he had any regrets about effectively forcing Mitrovic out of the club, Benitez replied: “He is doing well, he did well for Serbia, but Rondon was doing well for Venezuela.Report: Courtois’s agent arrested in money laundering case George Patchias – September 11, 2019 Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois agent has been arrested as part of a money-laundering investigation. The ugly word corruption is again staining the world of football. In…“Each player has his own environment and they can do well in one team and maybe not as well in the other one.“We have to make a decision in terms of what we needed and we knew what we needed, that’s it, now we have to move forward.“It doesn’t change my decision. I have to carry on with Ayoze Perez, Joselu, Yoshinori Mutuo, and Rondon, that’s it.”
