In the third quarter of Oklahoma City’s Thursday night win over Los Angeles, Thunder coach Scott Brooks, long maligned for doing the same old thing, discovered something new: a lineup of Nick Collison, Steven Adams, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Reggie Jackson could bend the court to its will. The group had rarely played together before — just six minutes during the regular season and just seven minutes in the playoffs. But that didn’t seem to be a problem. Over the next 15 minutes of play Thursday night, they scored 42 points and allowed just 24 points on 41 percent shooting, turning a 7-point deficit into an 11-point lead. Extrapolated to a 100-possession pace, the lineup’s point differential was +64.3.Small sample size, of course, but whoa, what a sample. The Thunder’s most-played lineup in the regular season (with Jackson in place of an injured Westbrook) had a per-100-possession point differential of +5.8. If we look at just the Thunder’s most frequently used front-court pairing, Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka, we find a per-100-possession point differential of just +2.0.Something about the fresh lineup on Thursday spaced the floor for Durant to do his best work of the night, scoring 13 points on just six shots. Neither Collison nor Adams is a particularly dangerous offensive player, but they are both good offensive rebounders. When they were on the floor together for 494 minutes in the regular season, the Thunder rebounded 33.4 percent of their own misses, compared to 26.5 across the whole season. Collison and Adams can also set screens and roll hard to the basket, allowing the Thunder to spread the defense even without a great perimeter-shooting big guy on the floor.Durant has played just a small percentage of his minutes with a Collison-Adams front-court pairing this season, but he’s been remarkably effective when he does, netting his highest true shooting percentage.Front Court Combinations Playing With DurantIt’s hard to suss out whether playing this group together was a shrewd and intentional move by Brooks, or whether he stumbled upon the lineup after Ibaka’s calf injury. But it’s an important development as the Thunder get ready for the San Antonio Spurs. Going into Thursday night’s game, seven of the Thunder’s 10 most-used lineups in the playoffs had a positive point differential. With the emphatic arrival of this group, it’s now eight of 10.Lineups matter especially for the Thunder, a team whose starting five tend to start slowly. That group finished the series with a negative first-quarter point differential and was outscored to begin four of the six games in the series. Inserting Collison and Adams into the starting lineup is probably not the solution to those slow starts, but the Spurs are waiting with a deep and versatile matchup nightmare. Every opportunity Brooks has to experiment with a seldom-used but potentially explosive lineup gives him more options to handle the varied scenarios the Spurs will throw at the Thunder.
For the fifth time and in one of the most dominating fashions the NBA Finals has ever seen, the San Antonio Spurs won the title on Sunday night. The Spurs beat the Miami Heat, 104-87, their third consecutive double-digit win.How dominant were the Spurs? San Antonio led the league in per-100-possession point differential during the regular season at +8.1. The Spurs were +13.0 or better in all four of their Finals wins. The ascension of finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, the decline of Miami’s defense, the battle of the role players going emphatically to San Antonio, Manu Ginobili immersing himself in the fountain of youth — many elements explain this Spurs breakthrough. But perhaps nothing was more important than San Antonio’s ball movement. As I’ve highlighted before, the Heat play an aggressive, trapping style of defense. If the Spurs maintained composure and continued to swing the ball during the finals, they would stretch Miami’s defense to the breaking point. That’s exactly what happened. In the Finals, the Spurs had 127 assists to just 76 for the Heat. Even if we account for their many more made field goals and instead compare the percentage of assisted baskets, the Spurs still have an enormous edge: 66 percent to 45 percent.More revealing: The Spurs had 42 secondary assists in the series (tracked by the NBA’s SportVU Player Tracking System, these are passes that led directly to an assist). That means that a third of the Spurs’ assists in the series were part of a sequence of two or more passes. Looking at the numbers game by game, we can see the stark difference in the way the Heat and the Spurs went about their business. The secondary assist percentage shown here is the percentage of each team’s baskets for which a secondary assist was recorded. For the Heat, those numbers dropped off significantly from the regular season, when Miami had an assist percentage of 59 percent and a secondary assist percentage of 16 percent. The Spurs defense was disruptive enough that it forced the Heat toward relying on LeBron James and Dwyane Wade to create offense, often singlehandedly. One might imagine that the Spurs would have a harder time executing against an NBA Finals-caliber team (not to mention a two-time defending champ) than they did in the regular season. But the Spurs pretty much met their regular season numbers: an assist percentage of 62 percent and a secondary assist percentage of 18 percent. The Heat’s defense wasn’t able to shake the Spurs out of their rhythm, and Miami paid the price, over and over again.

The controversial decision that took Manny Pacquiao’s welterweight crown has sparked outrage in the Philippines, so much so that the fallen superstar’s own mother has come out demanding a rematch.“I wanted him to retire before, but now I want to see this rematch happen,” Dionisia Pacquiao told GMA television. “I want to let all of Manny’s fans know there will be a rematch, and he will get back his belt.”Pacquiao’s success in the ring has propelled him to cult status in his native land. The former champion has forged successful careers in music, film and politics all while becoming one of the most prominent boxers on earth.
Led by Kawhi Leonard, the Toronto Raptors completely shut down the Bucks offense in Game 3, slicing Milwaukee’s Eastern Conference finals lead to 2-1 in the process. Mike Budenholzer’s crew finished the 2018-19 regular season ranked fourth in offensive efficiency, so holding them to just 93.1 points per 100 possessions across six periods1 Game 3 went to double overtime. stands as a highly impressive accomplishment for Toronto. Somewhat overshadowed in the discussion of that game, though, is that the Raptors’ own highly ranked offense struggled as well, continuing a concerning season-long trend against the Bucks.Toronto finished the regular season one spot behind Milwaukee in offensive efficiency, scoring at a rate of 113.1 points per 100 possessions. The Raptors hit that mark despite Leonard and Kyle Lowry each missing around a quarter of the season, among numerous other injuries, and despite having to incorporate new players both at the start of the season (Leonard and Danny Green) and on the fly after the trade deadline (Marc Gasol). That they were able to score so efficiently despite all those potential hurdles is a testament not just to the offensive design of coach Nick Nurse but also to the sheer magnitude of talent the Raptors assembled — and especially to the ability of Toronto’s players to solve whatever problems a defense posed for them throughout the year. But the one defense the Raptors consistently could not solve during the regular season was the Bucks’. And unfortunately for Toronto, they haven’t solved it in the conference finals so far either. Now 15 games into their playoff run, the Raptors have played 97 total games this season. Among those 97 contests, their offensive efficiency ranks in seven games against the Bucks are as follows: 22nd, 74th, 83rd (Game 2), 84th, 86th (Game 1), 89th (Game 3) and 96th.2The game that ranked 22nd actually saw the Raptors post their lowest Quantified Shot Quality of the season, per Second Spectrum, which means that their expected effective field-goal percentage based on the location of their shots ranked 97th out of their 97 games. They just happened to outshoot that expectation by 11 percentage points in that game. Put another way: Toronto has played a big chunk of its worst offensive basketball against Milwaukee. This is not necessarily all that shocking. The Bucks finished the regular season with the league’s best defense, after all. But even accounting for Milwaukee’s general defensive talent, there’s also a specific reason why the Bucks have been so effective at shutting down this Toronto team: No NBA defense is better than the Bucks at providing help against opponent drives, and the Raptors are one of the most drive-dependent teams in the league.Toronto ranked seventh in the league in drives per 100 possessions and fifth in points per drive during the regular season, per Second Spectrum. The Raptors were also the only team in the league to sport five different players who averaged at least 7.5 drives per game3One of those was late-season acquisition Jeremy Lin, but only a few other teams had four such players anyway.. And Toronto’s primary drivers were not just high-volume; they were also extremely effective.Leonard and Pascal Siakam drove to score, respectively ranking seventh and fifth in points percentage on the drive4The percentage of potential drive points that a player actually scored on his drives. among the 72 players who averaged at least 7.5 drives per game. Lowry and backup Fred VanVleet drove to pass, ranking first and seventh among that same group of 72 players in assist percentage5The percentage of a player’s drives that resulted in an assist. on the drive.Against the Bucks, though, the engines of Toronto’s drive-based attack too often ran into roadblocks: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez. Per Second Spectrum, there were 70 NBA players who were credited as the help defender on at least 350 drives during the regular season. Among that group of 70 players, Antetokounmpo ranked first in team points allowed per possession (0.95) when he helped contain a drive, and Lopez (1.02) ranked seventh.Driving the lane before encountering help in the form of Antetokounmpo or Lopez has often proven too much for the Raptors to handle, especially Leonard and Lowry. During Leonard’s three regular-season games against Milwaukee, he was both less likely to shoot on the drive and less effective at converting those shots than he was against other teams. That trend has carried over to the conference finals, where Leonard is shooting just 11 of 28 on the drive through three games. While Lowry was a pass-heavy driver throughout the regular season, he was almost comically averse to shooting on the drive during the three games he played against the Bucks. His pass rate on the drive against Milwaukee was 18 percentage points higher than the most pass-happy high-volume driver in the league this season, Indiana’s Darren Collison. This aversion to shooting has also carried over to the conference finals, but his passing also just isn’t working right now. Of his 20 drives in Games 1 through 3, only one of his 12 passes resulted in an assist — and this is the guy who led the league in assist rate on the drive during the season.Isolating Leonard and Lowry’s drives to the ones on which Lopez or Antetokounmpo provided the help, as Second Spectrum allows, shows that the Raptors have scored only 30 points on 38 such direct drives during the conference finals,6A direct drive is a play in which the driver either shoots, is fouled, turns the ball over or passes to a player who shoots within one dribble. “good” for an anemic 0.79 points per drive. That simply won’t do — not when you’re trying to defeat the team with the NBA’s best record, led by the probable MVP and coach of the year winners. The good news for the Raptors is that they got themselves back into the series with their Game 3 win. The bad news is that unless they figure something out offensively, they’re going to have to play perfect defense again in Game 4 tonight to even the series 2-2, and beyond that, to advance to the NBA Finals. Against Giannis and these Bucks, that’s a whole lot easier said than done.Check out our latest NBA playoff predictions.
Members of the OSU women’s volleyball team during a game against Nebraska on Oct. 3 at St. John Arena. OSU won 3-2. Credit: Ed Momot / For The LanternComing into the 2015 season, the Ohio State women’s volleyball team was picked by Big Ten coaches to finish eighth in the conference. The team has talked about using that as motivation all season long, and with victories against No. 18 Purdue (15-4, 6-2) and Indiana (12-8, 2-6) in St. John Arena over the weekend, the No. 7 Buckeyes (18-2, 7-1) now find themselves tied for first place in the Big Ten.With the wins, OSU also extended its winning streak to seven. The Buckeyes haven’t lost since their first conference game of the year against Minnesota on Sept. 23.In Game 1 of the weekend on Friday, OSU staged a comeback victory over the Boilermakers, who were previously undefeated in conference play. After a hot start by the Buckeyes, they dropped the second and third sets to the Boilermakers, and looked to be in danger of having their five-game winning streak snapped when Purdue jumped out to an 8-2 advantage in the fourth. OSU was able to close the gap, however, forcing a fifth set, which it won decisively.“We fought and we executed well in that last set,” junior libero Valeria León said. “Our tempo was really good. We got them a little bit off balance. It was a fight that game; it was not pretty at all.”Senior middle blocker Andrea Kacsits said it was huge for the Buckeyes to escape with a win after not playing their best volleyball.“Every win matters, but those are the ones that build your character and build your résumé,” she said. “Those ones are incredibly important in the end.”Coming into the game, coach Geoff Carlston emphasized serving as a key to slowing down Purdue, and OSU responded with its best game of the season from the service line, racking up 13 aces. Sophomore outside hitter Luisa Schirmer led the Buckeyes with a career-high five aces, while freshman setter Taylor Hughes also set a personal-best with three. The Buckeyes were also powered by a stout defensive performance, holding Purdue — which came into the game leading the Big Ten in attack percentage and kills per set — to a .197 attack percentage.OSU tallied 12 total blocks, six coming from senior middle blocker Tyler Richardson (one solo) and four each from junior middle blocker Taylor Sandbothe (two solo) and senior outside hitter Elizabeth Campbell. León picked up 16 digs, while Schirmer and Hughes added to their big serving nights with 15 apiece.“People always notice the blocking and the hitting, but the little things like coverage and serving (are also important),” Sandbothe said.To complement her blocking efforts, Sandbothe also led the OSU offense — which was held to a .232 attack percentage — with 16 kills and two aces. Campbell added to her four blocks with 11 kills and one ace. Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Wenz, who had appeared in only 12 sets all year, tied a career-best with six kills, four coming in OSU’s fourth-set comeback.Against the Hoosiers on Sunday, the Buckeyes rebounded from a slow start to take home their seventh straight win (22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-18).Behind seven kills from junior outside hitter Amelia Anderson, Indiana took an early lead as it fought off OSU in the first set. The Buckeyes would bounce back, never trailing in the second set to tie things up at the intermission. After winning a closely contested third set, OSU dominated the final set by leading the whole way.Similarly to Friday’s match, the Buckeyes didn’t have their best game offensively with a .218 attack percentage, but dug in on defense to hold Indiana to a .160 mark.León once again led OSU with 17 digs, while Schirmer and freshman outside hitter Audra Appold contributed 13 and 12, respectively, as the Buckeyes out-dug the Hoosiers 77-62.OSU had 7.5 blocks — four coming in the final set of the match — led by Sandbothe’s three and two each from Campbell, Richardson and Wenz.Sandbothe had 14 kills on offense, and did not make an error until the final set as she hit at a .565 attack percentage. Campbell (15 kills, two blocks) was the only other Buckeye to reach double-digit points. After Wenz stepped up to lift the OSU offense in Friday’s match, senior setter Emily Ruetter did the same on Sunday. Ruetter took over for Hughes midway through the third set and picked up 19 assists, seven digs, one block and one kill.It will be a quick turnaround for the Buckeyes, as they are scheduled to travel to East Lansing, Michigan, on Wednesday to take on Michigan State. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Fikayo Idowu. | Courtesy of Ohio StateTragic news reached the ears of Buckeye soccer fans and Ohio State alumni on Saturday, as word of the sudden death of junior defenseman Fikayo Idowu circulated around Columbus. A spokesman from the university released a statement from the OSU Department of Athletics, which stated the team was devastated to learn about his passing.“His family and loved ones are in our hearts and in our prayers during this time of grief,” read the statement.Idowu had been a member of the men’s soccer team for the last two years. He was majoring in health and rehabilitation sciences. The two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete appeared in two games last season for the Scarlet and Gray.Funeral arrangements are currently pending. A small memorial is scheduled to be held Saturday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, with teammates and friends of Idowu’s expected to be in attendance.
OSU redshirt freshman quarterback Joe Burrow (10) hands the ball off during the spring game on April 16 at Ohio Stadium. Credit: Lantern File PhotoIn 2015, redshirt junior Cardale Jones and then-redshirt sophomore J.T. Barrett were firmly No. 1 and No. 2 on the depth chart at quarterback. It was a matter of who would win the job. But there was another quarterback behind them. Enter sophomore Joe Burrow who is now the most likely among potential candidates to serve as backup to starting quarterback Barrett this season. In the spring, the race appeared to be a much more tightly contested battle between Burrow and redshirt junior Stephen Collier. But a season-ending ACL tear to Collier gave Burrow his opportunity in the spring game.In his first action with the Buckeyes, Burrow led the Gray team to victory while impressing the crowd of 100,000-plus with 196 passing yards for three touchdowns.“I took a big step this spring,” Burrow said following the spring game. “And I’m going to have to take a big one before fall camp.”Freshman quarterback Dwayne Haskins arrived on campus in June for the summer to battle for the No. 2 quarterback spot behind redshirt junior quarterback J.T. Barrett. At least in the eyes of quarterback coach and co-offensive coordinator Tim Beck, Burrow is viewed as the favorite.“That battle is moving along,” Beck said. “I think Joe is ahead because of his experience. I’m really pleased by his development right now.”Coach Urban Meyer knows better than anyone that a consistent backup quarterback is a vital piece in the team’s success. In Meyer’s first season with OSU in 2012, then-quarterback Braxton Miller went down with a shoulder injury in a home game against Purdue. Backup Kenny Guiton stepped in to deliver an improbable come-from-behind victory to preserve an undefeated season. In 2014, Barrett took over the starting role just a couple weeks before the first game when Miller reinjured his shoulder. Barrett racked up the Big Ten offensive player of the year accolade and then was replaced by Jones who led the team the rest of the way to a national title. The No. 2 quarterback must constantly be prepared to enter into the game and perform at an adequate level once called upon or his team could suffer for it. At the moment, Burrow said he’s still making strides to get to that level.“The backup’s job is to be ready at any moment, and if I’m not ready then I’m not doing my job,” Burrow said. “I’m not ready yet.”There are many things a quarterback must do to prepare for this situation. As Burrow has noted, it is important that to be ready, he must put in “more reps, more studying, just everything” to be sure he is ready to get in the game should he receive the call.“After spring, I still had a lot to prove and I still have a lot to get better,” Burrow. “I think it was like the second scrimmage in the spring when I threw three or four touchdowns. That’s when I knew I could play here and play here at a high level.”A big part of his preparation process is to learn from the veterans on the team. That starts with taking notes from Barrett.“(Barrett’s) really understanding and he’s a really smart guy,” Burrow said. “How he goes about the game, how he watches film, how he takes notes, how he reads the defense.”Of course as exciting as Barrett is, many have been waiting to see what the new guy brings to the table. 247sports.com ranked the four-star Burrow 305th best of all class of 2015 prospects and 14th best in the state of Ohio. Of course, acquiring the nickname “Mr. Football” in the state of Ohio has done little to lessen the excitement. But despite all the hype from evaluators, he has somehow flown under the radar. To Burrow, this has not been a hinderance, but rather something to help his performance.“From the start in high school recruiting, I was under the radar from Athens, Ohio,” Burrow said. “That’s how I kind of played my entire career. I played with a chip on my shoulder.”From a scouting perspective, Burrow is not the typical college-style quarterback. Instead of a dual threat like Barrett, Burrow has been described as a ‘Pro-Style Quarterback’ by 247sports, and most evaluators agree that his legs are not as much of a threat as most other college signal-callers.This is further enhanced by his stats from high school. Between 2012 and 2013, Burrow accumulated 94 touchdowns and 6,971 yards while completing 420 passes in 631 attempts. In that time span, Burrow attempted 262 rushing attempts and racked up 1,425 rushing yards, an average of 5.44 yards per carry, a modest average for most high school quarterbacks. “No, I can’t be a run-first guy,” Burrow said. “I could break one for maybe 15 or 20, but I won’t break one for 40, 50 or 60. I can be effective, but I can’t break a big one.”Burrow and the rest of the OSU football team will take on Bowling Green on Sept. 3 at noon.
OSU junior forward Nick Schilkey (7) during a game against Michigan on May. 6 at Nationwide Arena. Credit: Lantern File PhotoOhio State senior forward hockey captain Nick Schilkey wishes he had a dollar for every time he has been asked why he came to OSU from his home state of Michigan. If so, he said he would be as rich as another Buckeye: L Brands owner Les Wexner. The constant questioning will be worth it, however, if Schilkey is successful in his pursuit of a Big Ten championship and the program’s first berth into the NCAA tournament since 2009. A native of Marysville, Michigan, Schilkey grew up playing in the Detroit area primarily with the nationally recognized HoneyBaked AAA program. It was his parents, Glen and Michelle, along with his other family ties that instilled the love for the game of hockey in him.“My dad always joked that he put me in skates before I could walk.” Schilkey said. His speed and agility — which led him to score 87 goals and assist on 85 others between the ages of 13 and 16 against NHL players Alex Galchenyuk of the Montreal Canadiens and Jacob Trouba of the Winnipeg Jets — caught the attention of OSU.It was not until his final year with HoneyBaked in 2010-11 that he realized college hockey was a legitimate option.“I don’t think I could ever look back at one of those teams and thinking to myself as being one of the best guys because we were so good,” Schilkey said.OSU was the first school to approach Schilkey about furthering his career in hockey. The program’s commitment to Schilkey, facilities and campus life sold him immediately, he said.“I go to different schools around the country and play and nothing beats what we have here,” Schilkey said. “I came down here and the coaches really wanted me to be here and I wanted to be here. This was the spot for me.”Before he moved to Columbus, Schilkey played junior hockey for two years, a common prerequisite for hockey players before beginning their college endeavors. After two seasons with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League, the top junior league in the U.S., Schilkey was ready to showcase his talents at OSU.The team he was recruited by, however, had changed by the time he arrived. In April 2013, OSU coach Mark Osiecki was fired and replaced by Steve Rohlik, who had been an Osiecki assistant.Schilkey was not deterred.“I was comfortable with the coaches because (Rohlik) was here,” Schilkey said. “For me, I didn’t think anything would change too much.”Rohlik recalled the recruitment of Schilkey, who stood out like maize and blue in a sea of scarlet and gray.“When you walked into the rink, you knew who Nick Schilkey was,” Rohlik said. “He’d get that puck and he’d be Mach 10 down the ice. He could score. One thing that always grabbed me is that he wanted it. He wanted the puck, he wanted to be involved, he wanted to be ‘the guy.’ There was no hesitation in his game.”Rohlik has continued to be impressed by Schilkey’s performances weekend after weekend.“You know what you’re getting when he touches the ice,” Rohlik said. “I know if I throw him out there, he’s going to give me everything that he’s got.”And it shows in his production, Rohlik said.In 108 career games, Schilkey has 43 goals and 48 assists. He has been voted team captain twice due to leadership that has rubbed off on his teammates.“Right away freshman year, I noticed that he never quits,” senior defenseman Josh Healey said. “He goes out there every shift and every time in the weight room and goes until he can’t go anymore. It really pushed me to be my best when I was around him … He’s a leader by example and guys follow that, it’s a credit to him.”So far this season, the team has followed him to an upset win over No. 3 Denver last Friday on its home ice, followed by a tie with Air Force the next night. As the Buckeyes head into the heart of the 2016-17 season, Rohlik said there is no one he would trust more to lead the team.“I think it’s in him right now that he wants to do something special before he leaves here,” Rohlik said. “He’s already had such a huge impact on this program, not only by being a great player, but by being a great person. I can’t say enough about him. He’s one of those guys, as a coach, you love having him in your program.” As for Schilkey, the legacy he wants to leave behind is a championship in his home state. The conference tournament will be hosted at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit for the final time in March.“To get this team back there and obviously it’s going to take a lot of leaders in the room, it’s going to take the team to accomplish that goal,” Schilkey said. “I think we’re excited for it. I think we’re confident in that this is one of the best opportunities we’ve had in my four years here. To leave on top is something everybody wants to do.”Ranked No. 19 in the latest uscho.com poll, Schilkey and the Buckeyes head to Oxford, Ohio, on Saturday to take on in-state rival Miami at Goggin Ice Center with the puck drop scheduled for 8:05 p.m.
When a professional sports team in America has a bad season, as the old saying goes, there’s always next season – but not in European soccer. End-of-season discussions around some European professional soccer leagues are about survival. Mainly, which teams are going to survive to play another year in a given country’s top league. The English Premier League, the world’s most prominent soccer league, is among those leagues where suspense almost always carries into the final minutes of the season. The EPL has a stipulation in place that relegates or downgrades its bottom three teams in any one season to the Football Association’s Championship division. In return, the top three teams of the Championship are promoted to the Premier League. Conceptually, it would be like the Columbus Clippers having the best record in Triple-A baseball and then moving up to play Major League Baseball the following season. And the same goes for the Championship, as well as the two divisions below it – the FA’s League One and League Two. The top and bottom three teams from each of England’s four divisions shuffle back and forth season after season. With its season concluding on Sunday, this year’s EPL relegated teams are Wolverhampton F.C., Blackburn F.C. and Bolton F.C. No club is safe from the relegation rule as Blackburn (1995 EPL Champions) becomes the first former Premier League champion to be relegated. How harsh is that? 17 years removed from a championship and you’re deemed not good enough to compete in the league. Harsh or not, the rule is ingenious on some levels. It creates a level playing field and makes every game in a season matter. There certainly isn’t any talk of “tanking” game in the Premier League for any reason. So, what if American sports leagues adopted its European counterparts relegation and promotion rules? Would it be a good thing? Is it even possible? Would the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats have lost 23 games in a row to end the season? Whether it would be good for leagues like the NFL, MLB, NBA and the NHL to adopt the relegation-promotion rule is purely subjective. It would be good in the sense teams likely wouldn’t tank, and every regular-season game matters, but at what cost? Would the playoffs have to be eliminated? The EPL crowns its champion based solely on regular season performance. If there were no Super Bowl or World Series, would that be a good thing? The question of whether it’s even possible to have a relegation-promotion rule in American professional sports is interesting. As it stands now, only two of the top four leagues have the type of minor-league system in place to piggyback off the system used English soccer. The NHL has the American Hockey League (AHL) below it as an incremental level and MLB has Triple-A baseball with the International League and Pacific Coast League. Even then, those leagues would need adjustment. The NHL or MLB teams couldn’t have ties to the AHL or Triple-A teams as they do now using the lower level teams as a means of producing players within a farm system. The Premier League’s relegation and promotion rule is something American sports fans envy, and although some fans wish it would be adopted tomorrow by America’s sports leagues, it’s not a simple as it may seem.
During Ohio State’s annual Homecoming football game Saturday, many OSU alumni will be back in Columbus to cheer on their Buckeyes. One alumnus, however, will be representing the Buckeyes’ opponent. That alumnus is Bo Pelini, the coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who will be playing the Buckeyes in Ohio Stadium at 8 p.m. Saturday. Pelini, who played free safety at OSU from 1987-90, will be going against his alma mater in Columbus for the first time in his head coaching career. Pelini said his history at OSU will not affect him on Saturday. “I have pride in where I went to school and my career there. But that has nothing to do with Saturday,” Pelini said in Nebraska’s press conference Monday. “I’m in a different time in my life and a different place. I have a job to do and that’s all I’m concerned with.” As for the game itself, the No. 21 Cornhuskers (4-1) will be hoping to upset the No. 12 Buckeyes for their first loss of the season. Pelini acknowledged that the game will not be easy. “We know we’re going to have to play our best football on Saturday,” Pelini said during the Big Ten coaches’ teleconference on Tuesday. “We’re playing a really good football team.” Cornhuskers senior running back Rex Burkhead said the physical play of OSU’s defense stood out in the Buckeyes’ win against Michigan State. “I saw they were getting a big push on the offensive line. They were making it tough to make reads in the backfield and have lanes open up,” Burkhead said during Nebraska’s press conference. “I think penetration was the key thing they were getting.” As for the Buckeyes’ offense, Pelini said “we’ll see on Saturday” whether his defense is able to match up with OSU sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller and the Buckeyes’ offense. “Braxton Miller does a really good job,” Pelini said. “He’s a real threat to run, pass, they do a lot of different things to feature him. It puts a lot of stress on you.” Pelini added that while Miller might stand out, he is not the sole reason for the Buckeyes’ offensive success. “Everyone, and deservedly so, gives a lot of credit to Braxton Miller, but they, first and foremost, they do a lot of good things to enable him to make plays and they have a lot of good pieces around him,” Pelini said. “He’s not out there playing by himself. It’s a team game.” OSU coach Urban Meyer said the game will be a challenge, and that the team will have to make some changes to win this game. “We’re going to have to do some things that we haven’t done, and I’m not sure how we’ll adapt to that,” Meyer said. “I’m glad it’s (at) home.” Meyer knows the coach on the other side well: Meyer was a graduate assistant with the Buckeyes in 1987, Pelini’s freshman season. Meyer said he had a lot of respect for Pelini as a player, and that he has not changed much as a coach. “I have a really good relationship with Bo,” Meyer said. “(As a player, he was) just a real tough guy, just like his personality is now.” Pelini, who knows first-hand what it’s like to play inside Ohio Stadium, said it will be a “great environment” on Saturday. Cornhuskers senior safety P.J. Smith expressed his excitement to play in the Horseshoe during Nebraska’s press conference but added that his team must keep its “emotions normal.” “It is going to be crazy, it is going to be wild, but it will be fun,” Smith said. “We just got to go out there and execute the game plan.” The Buckeyes, who have won their first five games of the season, will be trying to avenge their loss to the Cornhuskers from their first-ever matchup as Big Ten opponents last season. In that game, the Buckeyes held a 27-6 lead in the third quarter, but gave up 28 unanswered points to lose 34-27.
For all intents and purposes, the 2012 Ohio State football senior class is gone, never to wear scarlet and gray in meaningful competition again. “It’s almost like you’re losing some of your children when they go away to college,” said first-year OSU coach Urban Meyer after the team’s season-ending win against Michigan on Saturday. “Our house is going to be empty.” Gone? Perhaps, but not to be soon forgotten. After all, it was the contributions of the seniors that made the team’s run at perfection a possibility. Behind the strength of many of those 21 departing seniors, the No. 4-ranked Buckeyes (12-0, 8-0 Big Ten) clinched the sixth undefeated and untied season in program history and the first since 2002 Saturday with a 26-21 win against archrival Michigan (8-4, 6-2 Big Ten) at Ohio Stadium. The 109th edition of The Game saw OSU, the Big Ten’s Leaders Division champions, claim its 44th win against the Wolverines. UM, eliminated from Big Ten title contention after Nebraska beat Iowa on Friday, still owns the all-time series advantage with a 58-44-6 record. With Saturday being the final game of the season due to the NCAA-imposed postseason ban, one thing was evident within minutes of the final whistle following victory against UM – no more seniors. Meyer handed out several “thank you’s” during his postgame remarks, but the biggest thank you went out to those whose eligibility is up, players like Zach Boren, Etienne Sabino and John Simon. Theirs was an effort worthy of remembrance, Meyer said, and he plans to ensure that their memory doesn’t fade away. “I’m going to see to it when you walk into that Woody Hayes (Athletic Center) this team will never be forgotten, because they deserve that,” he said. It’s not hard to imagine why Meyer feels so strongly. Boren switched positions midseason, jumping from offense to defense when he left the fullback spot to join a depleted line backing corps. Boren hadn’t played linebacker since high school but, in just six games, he tallied 50 tackles, including a team-high nine in the win against UM. One of those tackles was a bone-jarring sack of Wolverines junior quarterback Devin Gardner. Boren stood above Gardner after the hit, shouting and rattling his face mask just above Gardner’s. Sabino broke his leg during OSU’s Oct. 6 win against Nebraska but returned in time to join the team for its divisional-clinching win against Wisconsin on Nov. 17, as well as the game against the Wolverines. The redshirt senior linebacker said the 2012 season was indeed a dream. “I wouldn’t want it to end any other way,” he said. And there was Simon, a defensive end and the team’s emotional leader throughout the perfect campaign. Simon missed Saturday’s Senior Day activities, as well as the game itself, with a right knee injury sustained one week prior against Wisconsin. “John Simon – the heart and soul of who we are as the 2012 football team,” Meyer said. Simon was not made available for comment following the game. There were other major contributors from the senior class, relatively unheralded compared to Boren, Sabino and Simon, but whose contributions likely went just as far in helping the team achieve an undefeated season. OSU redshirt senior punter Ben Buchanan walked off the Ohio Stadium field for the final time at peace with what he gave to the program. His final play was a 41-yard punt that pinned UM on its 8-yard line with less than 10 minutes to play in the game. Given the moment, Buchanan said, the punt was as good as it gets. “I think this team will be remembered as a very unselfish team, a team that really had to come together with some tough circumstances, there’s no doubting that,” Buchanan said. “I was proud of the way these guys just rallied and, they did, we just refused to lose and to be a senior on this team was truly on honor.” Sensing that he wouldn’t fit in Meyer’s offensive system, OSU senior Reid Fragel went to his then-newly hired coach and volunteered to switch from tight end to right tackle. For his selfless act, Fragel was plunged into a preseason battle for playing time with freshman Taylor Decker, which Fragel later won. Months later, Fragel attempted to address his teammates in the locker room following the season-ending win against the Wolverines. He struggled to articulate he feelings. “I wanted to thank (my teammates) and, really, tell them how I feel about this whole year, but it’s hard to put words to this season we’ve had,” Fragel said. “It’s something out of a movie … Just to see us come out 12-0, beating Michigan, that’s something I couldn’t have wrote up before the game.” As Buchanan and his teammates enjoyed the climactic day of the season, OSU football converged with its troubled past as former coach Jim Tressel, the man responsible for the 2012 team’s postseason ban, returned. Once shamed by the “Tattoo-Gate” scandal in which he knowingly fielded a team of ineligible players during the 2010 season, Tressel was hoisted onto the shoulders of players from his 2002 national championship team, which was honored for the 10-year reunion of its great feat between the first and second quarters. But with Tressel came memories of his unceremonious exit from the university – he was forced to resign in May 2011 – as well as the Buckeyes’ agonizing 2011 campaign where they posted a 6-7 record. The loudest cheers during Saturday’s short, in-game ceremony for the 2002 team came during the moments that featured Tressel, the man that each member of the 2012 senior class signed on to play for. Louder still were the cheers for the current players themselves, now under Meyer’s direction, during actual game action, and particularly when the clock struck “00:00.” Meyer will hold a “season wrap-up” press conference on Monday, according to an OSU athletics release. The Buckeyes will then turn the page on the 2012 season and set their sights on 2013. “After our team meeting on Tuesday, we start a new journey,” Meyer said. The strong foundation that has been laid at OSU exists because of the 21 dedicated Buckeyes that hung up their pads and cleats for the final time on Saturday. For those seniors who won’t rejoin the Scarlet and Gray in pursuit of championship glory, their last gasp as active members of the Buckeye Brotherhood couldn’t have been sweeter. “It’s unbelievable, man, I couldn’t ask for anything more other than a chance to play a couple more weeks,” said OSU redshirt senior defensive lineman Nathan Williams. “This is how the 2012 team is going to be remembered by, you know, going undefeated … going 12-0 and beating Michigan at home. I really wouldn’t want to go out any other way than that.”
Kent State’s Darrell Hazell might become Purdue’s next football coach, according to multiple reports Tuesday. After guiding the No. 25 Golden Flashes to an 11-2 mark this season, Hazell is reportedly the Boilermakers’ first pick to replace former Purdue coach Danny Hope, who was fired Nov. 25, after going 23-27 in four seasons. Hazell led Kent State its first winning season since 2001 – a feat that earned the second-year coach the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year. The potential move to West Lafayette, Ind., though, could bring him back to his old stomping grounds in the Big Ten. From 2004 to 2010, Hazell served as an assistant under former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel – first as the team’s wide receivers and kick returns coach before becoming the Buckeyes’ assistant head coach and wide receivers coach. Cincinnati’s Butch Jones has reportedly also been in talks with Purdue about their coaching vacancy. According to multiple media outlets, the Boilermakers are expected have a decision by Wednesday. After losing to Northern Illinois in overtime, 44-37, in the MAC Championship Game Saturday, the Golden Flashes are set to face Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Jan. 6 in Mobile, Ala.
“There is a little nudge around here because they beat us, and really the way they beat us,” he said. “Offensively right now there is a lot of distaste for the way that thing happened.”In last year’s meeting between the schools, OSU was decimated by the talent of the Virginia Tech defense. Then-redshirt freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett, making the second start of his collegiate career, completed just nine of 23 passes and was sacked seven times. He also threw three interceptions, including two by then-senior safety Kyshoen Jarrett and a late 63-yard pick-six by then-junior safety Donovan Riley.Powell said a big reason for the Buckeyes being unprepared for Virginia Tech last year was their season opener the weekend before against Navy. The safety said the Midshipmen, a team known for running the triple option on nearly every play, forced the Buckeyes to spend their entire practice time preparing for that untraditional offense rather than a more typical one used by teams like Virginia Tech.“Last year we spent a lot of time trying to master that triple option offense. It was really difficult to go from that then jump straight to a regular spread offense,” Powell said. “It’s good to finally just focus on one thing and that’s kind of what we’re going to see all year, instead of focus on one thing for one game that we’re never going to see again.”Schutt added that with no Navy game ahead of Virginia Tech in 2015, he expects the team to be better adjusted and then some, when the extra motivation is factored in.“For this game specifically, I think we put in more than we would for a normal game just because of what happened last year,” Schutt said. “We felt unprepared last year coming into that game, both offensively and defensively, and this year we’ve been working on this game plan all summer and are excited about next week.”OSU’s rematch with Virginia Tech is scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff on Monday in Blacksburg, Virginia. Credit: Lantern File PhotoOhio State might have won the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship in 2014, but the one thing the team cannot hang its hat on is a perfect season. While the Buckeyes won 13 straight games to end the season, a 35-21 defeat at home to Virginia Tech on Sept. 6 put an early but permanent mark in their loss column. Now, 366 days after the upset loss, OSU is set to have a chance to return the favor to the Hokies on their home field of Lane Stadium.“Due to the fact that we did lose to them last year … that’s something that we can’t get back at them, because although we won it all last year, still in our loss column there was a ‘one’ in there, and they’re the ones that unfortunately gave it to us,” redshirt junior safety Tyvis Powell said. “So it’s just about going out there and making sure that doesn’t happen again.”While members of the team said they vividly remember the 2014 matchup and have been studying tapes from that game for weeks, senior defensive lineman Tommy Schutt said the extra motivation the team feels is not completely revenge-based.“I wouldn’t necessarily call it revenge, but it’s something that’s been in the back of our heads since that game,” he said. “I think we definitely have a little extra chip on our shoulders knowing what happened last year, how we finished the season last year knowing they were the one team that was able to beat us, so we definitely have a little extra chip on our shoulder going into this one.”OSU coach Urban Meyer echoed his players’ sentiments and said Monday’s game is one the Buckeyes have been looking forward to for a long time.

The NHS is facing pressures fuelled by lack of funding for social care, charities sayCredit:Dominic Lipinski/PA The number of people aged 85 and over has risen by one third since 2000Credit:John Stillwell/PA The head of the watchdog raised concerns that successive Governments had failed to face up to a mounting crisis. “I think this is one of the biggest social policy challenges of our time,” Mr Behan said, pointing out that none of the party leaders mentioned the issue during their party conference speeches. In the report, Mr Behan raised fears about care home closures, and the withdrawal of home care from those who need it.“We are becoming concerned about the fragility of the adult social care market, with evidence suggesting that it might be approaching a ‘tipping point,’” he writes.“The combination of a growing, ageing population, more people with long-term conditions and a challenging financial climate means increased need but reduced access. The result is that some people are not getting the help they need – which in turn creates problems in other parts of the health and care system, such as overstretched A&E departments or delays in people leaving hospital.” Patients sent home from hospital on a Sunday are 40 per cent more likely to end up in A&E, the new statistics showCredit:Andrew Fox “We are raising this issue because we think urgent action needs to be taken,” he said. “We think more resources need to be made available.”Making a direct plea to ministers, he said: “We can’t carry on like this.”The regulator raised fears that the care sector could face a wave of closures, piling still more pressure on hospitals.“There are indications that the sustainability of adult social care is approaching a tipping point,” the report warns.Rising numbers of pensioners were being denied help to wash, eat and dress, increasing the risk they would end up in hospital, the watchdog said.Latest figures suggest more than one million elderly people are living with “unmet social care needs” – an increase of 200,000 people in five years.Mr Behan said the trend, combined with nursing home closures, care providers terminating contracts, and the failure of some of the worst services to improve meant the sector faced a crisis the like of which he had never seen. “I am now in my 38th year working in health and care services and I can’t recall a time when those five factors have occurred together,” he said.Investment in services to help older people to live independently would reduce pressure on hospitals, which have become increasingly overstretched, the watchdog said.“This is about help with activities for daily living – washing, feeding, cooking, cleaning,” Mr Behan said. People discharged from hospital at the weekend are up to 40 per cent more likely to be back in Accident & Emergency within a week, official data reveals. The NHS report on “seven day services” confirms previous studies which show patients admitted to the hospital on Saturdays and Sundays fare far worse.Death rates within a month of admission at the weekends were 15 per cent higher than for those who arrived during the week. But the new figures also suggest that hospitals are sending too many patients home at weekends, when they are not well enough, or do not have the support to care for them at home.Ministers have promised a “truly seven day NHS” by 2020, amid concern that patients are suffering worse care at weekends because of a lack of senior doctors, and a scarcity of services to help elderly people be safely discharged.Charities say overcrowded hospitals are under pressure to empty their beds, amid record levels of bed-blocking for want of social care to support the elderly. It means that at weekends, junior doctors have been left to discharge patients who are not well enough, or who need help from rehabilitation and social services which is not available. As a result, elderly people have been sent home with little help, only to fall into crisis, and end up back in A&E within a week, the new figures show. The study warns: “An emergency readmission within a short period period following discharge from hospital (defined here as seven days) could, in some cases be considered indicative of the patient being discharged before they were fit or be due to a lack of availability of rehabilitation and support services when a patient was discharged home following hospital treatment.”Latest statistics show hospital bed occupancy is at record levels for the time of year, with bed-blocking levels up 30 per cent on last year.Last month the head of the CQC said hospitals were struggling because they were attempting to look after too many elderly patients who were not getting enough help from social care.David Behan, CQC chief executive, said he had never experienced a crisis on such a scale, during almost 40 years working in health and social care.

William Lincoln, 60, of Bethnal Green, east London, was found guilty of the same offence and one count of conspiracy to conceal, convert or transfer criminal property.Lincoln was also given a seven-year sentence.Referring to the amount being sought in confiscation proceedings, Denis Barry, representing Jones at Woolwich Crown Court, said: “The Crown say £25 million between five.”The court heard that a full confiscation hearing is expected to last around six weeks, and a date was set for January 15 2018, with a deadline of April 30 that year.Philip Evans QC, prosecuting, said: “This is an exceptional case which warrants an extension.”It had originally been thought that some £14 million worth of goods had been snatched during the raid at Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Ltd.If members of the gang do not pay back what the judge rules they gained from the crime, they could face up to a maximum of 14 years of jail time being added to their sentences, without parole.Tom Wainwright, for Reader, asked for a QC to be appointed to his client’s case, stating they would have the required skill to deal with proceedings of this length and Reader’s health. He said: “The case is made more complex because Mr Reader is not in good health. Historic Suffolk landmarks made famous by the paintings of John Constable could soon become part of Essex, if furious villagers get their way.Residents of the, for now, bucolic idyll that is East Bergholt believe changing counties is the only way to protect the local landscape from the threat of developers. It means settings made famous around the world by the romantic artist, such as Willy Lott’s Cottage and Flatford Mill, could be lost to Suffolk forever. But villagers feel so betrayed by their local council that “that’s their problem” best sums up the current mood.Sitting in the picturesque Stour Valley and accommodating fewer than 3,000 souls, East Bergholt is in the throes of a bitter struggle to fight off the development of a further 144 homes. So determined is the Parish Council to prevent the expansion, that it is threatening to break free from Babergh District council and defect to the Essex borough of Colchester.“Colchester seems to place more value on protecting heritage assets,” said Parish Council chairman Paul Ireland.“It would be a real wrench to leave Suffolk, but the question we have to ask is whether it is better to be in Suffolk and have lots of houses built against our wishes, or to be in Essex and have better protection.” Campaigner Peter Dent, who chairs the East Bergholt Action Group, said: “I don’t care if Suffolk would miss us.“That’s their problem.“We’ve got a Colchester postcode, we’ve got a Colchester phone number.”We would like to give it a try and work with a council that would respect the village and the heritage of Constable Country.”Frankly, we’d like to move to somewhere where we don’t have to battle night and day.”Villages as well as whole parishes and districts can be moved from one county to another by acts of parliament and Boundary Commission reviews, the next report of which is due in 2018.The most important factor for boundary changes, however, is population changes and the importance of maintaining equal parliamentary constituencies, meaning it is unlikely the Commission will accept East Bergholt’s concerns over housing policy.A spokesman for Babergh District Council, which currently controls the village, insisted the local authority was listening to the people of East Bergholt. John Glen, minister for arts, heritage and tourism, said: “The Lake District is one of the UK’s most stunning and ancient landscapes and I am thrilled it has been granted World Heritage Site status.”It is a unique part of the world that combines a vibrant farming community with thousands of archaeological sites and structures that give us an amazing glimpse into our past.”This decision will undoubtedly elevate the position of the Lake District internationally, boosting tourism and benefiting local communities and businesses.” The Lake District has provided inspiration for some of the country’s best-loved writers including Beatrix Potter, William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge. It boasts sites of historical importance such as King Arthur’s Round Table and is home to England’s largest natural lake – Windermere – and highest mountain – Scafell Pike.It is the 31st place in the UK to make the list, following in the footsteps of Stonehenge, the city of Bath and Canterbury Cathedral. “As a result pedestrians are being bombarded with a series of eyesores that blight the public highway.“Councils are currently powerless to act, so we want the Government to overturn the existing out-of-date legislation and give local authorities the ability to take action where this is an issue.”Oxford Street and Edgware Road in Westminster, London have been particularly blighted along with Lord Street, in Liverpool where there are 8 within a 125m stretch. Under the current law, companies only need a licence from Ofcom to install a telephone box. Councils can object based on design and appearance but the final decision is made by the Planning Inspectorate.Councils say that the boxes also fall victim to anti-social behaviour and they are powerless to remove them even when they are out of use. Telephone boxes are being used as Trojan horses to sell adverts, councils have complained as applications to install them have soared by 900 per cent. Despite a rise in mobile phones meaning that the street payphone is a “relic of a bygone era”, a planning loophole means that hundreds could be put up around the country to provide lucrative advertising space, the The Local Government Association (LGA) has warned. The LGA, which represents 370 councils in England and Wales, has now called on the Government to scrap permitted development, which allows telecoms companies to install boxes without planning permission. A sample of 12 council areas found that there were just 89 applications to install phone boxes in 2015 compared to 914 last year, a rise of more than 900pc.Cllr Martin Tett, the LGA’s Planning spokesman, said: “The rise of the smartphone and digital age has seen the telephone box become a largely obsolete relic of a bygone era.“While there is still a limited need for some telephone boxes in our town centres and cities, for example for emergencies, the number of applications councils have seen is simply staggering.“Companies are exploiting a loophole in the law to allow what is tantamount to Trojan telephone boxes being used as advertising spaces rather than the original purpose of providing a place for people to use a phone. “Abraham was a striking young man and a real contributor to society. He was awarded a National Police Bravery Award in 2009 after intervening in a rape and then giving evidence in court.”Such courage and an overwhelming sense of what was right and wrong clearly demonstrated his strength of character.”There have been two further violent deaths in London this month, with a 16-year-old boy becoming the youngest murder victim in London so far this year, succumbing to his wounds after he was fatally shot. The teenager, who was shot in the face in Walthamstow, east London, at around 10pm on Monday night, died in hospital with his family by his bedside on Tuesday evening. His death came after that of Tanesha Melbourne, 17, who was gunned down around 30 minutes earlier just three miles away in Tottenham. There is a £20,000 reward for anyone who can offer information which releases information that leads to the capture of the killer of the son of a Nigerian MP, who recently received a police bravery award.26-year-old Abraham Badru was gunned down in Hackney, east London, on Sunday. He was a churchgoer and recently received a bravery award for intervening in a sex attack on a teenage girl.Mr Badru was praised after giving evidence against a gang which committed rape on the Frampton Park Estate in 2007.Police said he was shot while opening the boot of his car to look for a drink. The Metropolitan Police said just before the attack – at around 11.10pm – Mr Badru had parked his black Mercedes on Ferncliff Road when he was approached by a suspect or suspects. He had not planned to be home at that time, but had returned due to a change of plans. He received a police bravery award in 2007Credit: Metropolitan Police Paramedics and police were called to the scene, but Mr Badru was pronounced dead.A black male, believed to be wearing a black puffer jacket, walked along Ferncliff Road in the direction of Downs Park Road and through a nearby alleyway after the sound of a gunshot, officers added. His family have said they are devastated by his death, describing the pain as “unbearable.” They added: “Abraham has been snatched from us; he didn’t die of an illness, a freak accident, or of natural causes, no death is ever easy but he died because he was shot.”He was shot by person/persons terrorising the peace of the community, terrorising innocent people, threatening our freedom on our streets and threatening our progression.”We plead with any parent, siblings, extended family, friends, associates, in desperation that if you have any information to please come forward.” The investigation into Mr Badru’s murder is one of 48 inquiries Scotland Yard has launched so far this year – eight in January, 15 in February, 22 in March and three in April.Police said Mr Badru – described as a “talented young man with ambitions and so much to live for cut down in his prime” – was not intending to be home and his return was due to a change of plans.Detective Chief Inspector Noel McHugh said: “The answer to Abraham’s death lies in the community. I know that people are talking about what happened.”It is something truly out of the ordinary, a community hero being murdered.”His family and friends cannot comprehend what has happened, and there are no words that can adequately describe the pain Abraham’s family are going through. Jimmy Page had three minutes to deliver his caseCredit:David Mirzoeff /PA The application had been given the provisional green light. But the committee voted to defer its decision in order to add in a legal clause that would provide independent assessment of the vibrations caused by the work. He is used to playing in sold-out stadiums before thousands of screaming rock and roll fans. But Jimmy Page was playing to a rather different crowd on Tuesday night – the suited and booted planning application committee of Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council. The Led Zeppelin guitarist pleaded with councillors to reject a planning application lodged by his next door neighbour, Robbie Williams. The two stars have been embroiled in a bitter dispute that has dragged on for nearly four years as Page has tried to block Williams from building a huge basement, including a swimming pool, underneath the garden of his luxury £17.5millon west London homePage was given three minutes to put forward his case and read from carefully prepared notes, to ensure he did not “go rambling on”, and followed the words with his finger. Ms James suggested: “Meghan did so many self-checking gestures of anxiety which is interesting in such a confident woman.”She walked up the aisle on her own without batting an eyelid.”The duchess’s outfit – a beige Givenchy dress with caped shoulders – may have not been the ideal choice, Ms James said.”I think her outfit did her no favours. The caped shoulders restricted her arms and she lost some of her more natural movements.”But the Duchess soon eased into the day, and was a natural with the crowds who had gathered to catch a glimpse of her and her grandmother-in-law. “We saw displays which showed the pair genuinely having fun.”The Duchess of Sussex had her guard up in the morning, showing signs of anxiousness – not least when there as confusion over who was meant to get in the royal Bentley first. “Meghan was still being very careful. She sat with her legs crossed at the ankles and was clearly seeking approval,” said Ms James. The newlywed Duchess, who married the Duke of Sussex in a star-studded ceremony in Windsor last month, was nervous, repeatedly touching her hair. Their first engagement was a ceremony marking the opening of the new £1.86 billion Mersey Gateway bridge. The rapport between the pair was obvious, with the Duchess leaning in and talking to the Queen, producing what appeared to be fits of laughter from the 92-year-old. The Queen and Duchess led crowds in a minute’s silence to mark the first anniversary of the Grenfell Tower disaster, solemnly bowing their heads. They then watched more performances, learned about “digital buddies” who were teaching their elders to use technology more efficiently, and took to the streets to meet thousands of well-wishers. Ms James described the monarch as having young body language for a woman of 92.”She looked positively girlish. When she smiles you can see the young princess coming out. She’s got a beautiful childlike smile and her little hands were formed into fists at one point. Perhaps Meghan did bring a little bit more of that out in her. It saw the pair deep in conversation, laughing and gesturing as they watched a seven-minute-long dance performance by children and enjoyed one another’s company. Ms James said: “The Queen doesn’t indulge in worries and she didn’t spend a lot of time checking on Meghan, but instead let her get on with it.”But when she did glance at her, it was with a beaming smile and approval.”She added: “The Queen was the happiest I’ve seen her in a long time. They looked like naughty teenagers giggling together at one point.” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? The Queen laughs alongside the Duchess of SussexCredit:Jeff J Mitchell/Getty The Duchess of Sussex showed her nerves on her first joint engagement with the Queen, but there was genuine warmth between the monarch and Meghan, a body language expert said.Judi James said the head of state and the former Suits star giggled together like teenagers at one point as they enjoyed their day out in Cheshire. The Queen and Duchess travelled to Cheshire on the Royal train, leaving Euston at 11pm on Wednesday and spending the night in a discreet siding en route before pulling into Runcorn station at 10.35am for the Duchess’ first trip to the north of England. Greeted by the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, the Duchess lingered behind the Queen, appearing slightly nervous as she watched for instructions about where to go. After a moment of confusion at their waiting car, as both politely waited for the other to get in, the Duchess asked her grandmother-in-law “what is your preference?” before being told: “You go first.” The Queen wore a green outfit by Stewart Parvin, choosing a colour some onlookers interpreted as a gesture of support on the anniversary of the Grenfell Tower disaster.
Men with eating disorders are suffering discrimination because of NHS same sex ward rules, research suggests.A study of 26 UK hospitals treating the condition found four had stopped admitting male patients entirely, in a bid to comply with Department of Health guidelines. The rules, drawn up in 2010, say male and female patients should not be housed on the same wards, in a bid to protect patient dignity. But the new study suggests that men suffering from eating disorders are getting worse access to care, because hospitals are prioritising single sex wards for female patients.–– ADVERTISEMENT ––Men make up an estimated 25 per cent of the 1.25 millon people with an eating disorder within the UK.But on average, male sufferers will wait nearly three times as long female sufferers to be even referred for treatment. The research, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, also found that nine in ten patients with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia were in favour of mixed sex wards. Patients told researchers that all-female wards could encourage “competitive” tendencies – which could be lethal among those with such conditions.Dr Akiria Fukutomi, lead researcher, from Vincent Square Eating Disorder Service, run by Central and North West London Foundation trust, said: “The single-sex system disadvantages males as the majority of the patients are female. Until recently the Bristol-based project One25 had been a little-known charity quietly trying to improve the lives of vulnerable sex workers. But now, following a visit by the Duchess of Sussex, it has found fame across the world, even receiving its first ever donations from overseas. In an example of what is being called ‘the Meghan effect’ the charity has been sent hundreds of pounds from donors in the US, New Zealand and Jamaica. Donations have also come in from Switzerland and Canada.Photographs of the Duchess touring the project – and writing messages of support for the sex workers on bananas included in food parcels for them – were seen around the world, leading to One25’s website receiving a surge in visits, with thousands more logging on to read about their work.As a result of media coverage of the Duchess’s visit others also sent in items for distribution to sex-workers operating on the street, such as umbrellas, socks and glovesAnna Smith, the charity’s chief executive, said: “The upsurge in interest in our work as a result of Meghan’s visit has been incredible. We’ve had our first donations from overseas. There’s been lots of interest from America, but also from other countries.” The Duchess, who visited the charity alongside Prince Harry to see for herself its work in trying to help women break free from sex work, homelessness and addiction, decided she wanted to send a personal, handwritten message to those in need. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex meet with CEO Anna Smith during their visit to One25, a charity specialising in helping women to break free from street sex work and addictionCredit:Toby Melville/PA During a tour of the kitchen at One25, she asked for a felt tipped pen to draw hearts and notes, including the words: “You are strong”, “You are loved”, “You are brave”, “You are special”.As the Royal couple were shown the food bags being prepared, the Duchess said: “Oh actually do you have a Sharpie marker? I have an idea.“I saw this project this woman had started somewhere in the States on a school lunch programme. On each of the bananas she wrote an affirmation, to make the kids feel really, like, empowered. It was the most incredible idea – this small gesture.”The fruit was turned into banana bread included in a food parcel for sex workers and subsequently delivered by van, along with blankets, condoms, hot water bottles and advice from the charity’s experts, to women on the streets.Ms Smith said the women who received the banana bread, along with photographs of the Duchess’s messages, had been deeply touched by her gesture.“One said it was just so lovely to be thought of in that way,” she said. “Our service users were so happy at the idea that she had visited the project.”Ms Smith said the Royal visit had highlighted the work of the charity, which operates on an annual turnover of £1.2 million. in trying to encourage and help women women trapped in street sex work to break free and build new lives away from violence, poverty and addiction. Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Sign up to our free twice-daily Front Page newsletter and new audio briefings. The Duchess’s interest in an unfashionable cause such as sex work has been likened to visits made by Prince Harry’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, to people with HIV and AIDS, at a time when they were still being shunned by parts of wider society.Ms Smith said: “The plight of our women is often misunderstood, and they are stigmatised and hidden from the world. The way the Duchess carried out her visit made a huge difference to the way our work is seen.”Following the visit one former sex worker called Sam, who now volunteers at One25, said: “By being there in a non-judgmental, loving way you all made me see I could be more – and for that I will always be eternally grateful!”
The Duchess of Sussex surprised sports fans on Saturday afternoon as she made an unexpected, All-American appearance at the baseball. The Duchess joined her husband, who had previously been announced as attending alone, to watch the New York Yankees play the Boston Red Sox at London Stadium.Prince Harry sported a black Invictus Games polo shirt, which Meghan matched with a black dress and belt teamed with flat shoes. The couple were greeted before posing all-smiles with both teams in a group shot. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex even accepted a gift for baby Archie: a baseball shirt with his name printed on it. In good spirits, the Duchess of Sussex hugged players, as an amused Harry looked on. It was a rare public appearance for the Duchess since the birth of the couple’s first child, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, on May 6.Earlier this month, she appeared at Trooping the Colour to mark the Queen’s official birthday, but did not take part in the state visit of President Donald Trump. The couple officially made an appearance at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to promote the Invictus Games Foundation, Prince Harry’s sports tournament for wounded veterans which is the charity partner for the weekend baseball series in London. It is the first Major League Baseball (MLB) game played in Europe, and will be watched by a large audience of eager baseball fans back in the US. Former Invictus competitors from both the USA and UK took part to make the ceremonial first pitch thrown on the ball park.”The support from these groundbreaking games will significantly enhance the Foundation’s ability to provide recovery opportunities for international wounded, injured, or sick serving or veteran armed forces personnel,” Invictus chief executive Dominic Reid said. The royal’s baseball outing comes just over nine years after Prince Harry threw the first pitch for hosts New York Mets against the Minnesota Twins on Britain’s Armed Forces Day.Organisers of yesterday’s game said all 120,000 tickets sold out in 45 minutes. The first regular MLB games to be played in Europe are expected to open up previously untapped markets for the organisation, which has already staged international events in Mexico, Japan, Australia and Puerto Rico. She is likely to make further irregular appearances, including at Archie’s christening and potentially Wimbledon, before resuming official duties in the autumn with a tour to South Africa. Her attendance at the baseball will be considered as a nod to her American heritage, as well as the Sussex’s following across the pond. The couple have recently announced they are to set up their own charitable foundation, which will have the flexibility for them to work more globally.

The Lance Corporal attached to the City Constabulary who was accused to engaging in sexual activities with a minor was on Monday remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.Clifton Pellew was not required to plead to the charge which stated that the act was committed on August 15, 2017, while the 15-year-old victim was in his custody. The accused was remanded to prison and is expected to return to court on February 14, 2018.This publication had reported that at some point during his detention for reasons unknown, the minor was transferred to the Regent Street Outpost where the alleged incident occurred.Officer Quacy Baveghems had reportedly informed his superior of the act, claiming that he had witnessed it. However, as an investigation began into the matter, it was discovered that Baveghems did not make a written entry of the incident in the station diary.Pellew and Baveghems were fired, after receiving a letter signed by the Town Clerk.Georgetown Mayor, Patricia Chase-Greene had said that the decision to dismiss the officers came following the discovery of new evidence.“There were some additional information that was brought to the council’s attention and some video tapings. Based on those video tapes, and even though it was still an alleged allegation, in the best interest of the Constabulary and the Organization the Town Clerk as administrator of the city of Georgetown would have dismissed them both,” Chase-Greene added. The matter was subsequently transferred to the Police who sought legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).This publication was told that after reviewing the file, the DPP has advised that Pellew be charged with the rape of a child under the age of 16 years. Christopher RamOutspoken political commentator and Charted Accountant Christopher Ram has described some of the harrowing tales that have resulted from the closures of several estates across country which came via Government’s downsizing of the sugar industry owing the billions of dollars in subsidised allocations.Ram opined that the current Administration should have implemented the industry’s overhaul in a phased manner as opposed to the four closures within one year.Wales was officially closed in December 2016 and the closures of East Demerara (Enmore), Skeldon and Rose Hall were finalised by December 2017 although the latter three were reopened under limited operations via the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited’s (NICIL) Special Purpose Unit (SPU).Since then, Ram has been facilitating a donation drive to the children of ex-workers of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo). The items have included bicycles, haversacks and stationery supplies. From his vantage point, the accountant imparted that the closures have facilitated social ills owing the fact the inhabitants of the various communities built their lives from their earnings in the sugar industry.“The people need employment; they need support and it seems that they’re almost forgotten and its cynical, it’s callous and it’s cruel. The problem in those areas is that they’re almost single industry communities which have been built for decades and decades around sugar and you can’t take away their lifeline, the very essence of the community and think that you have solved the problem and you’ve created some extremely costly social problems,” he observed.Ram also pointed out a disturbing scene whereby he saw persons fishing in nearby drains during one of his many visits and it was explained that this was for their sustenance.Speaking from a fiscal perspective, Ram pondered why the country’s budget deficit is higher in spite of the rationalisation objectives. He added that there was “no question” that some realignment was necessary in the sugar industry but said it not only should have been phased but well planned.“What we have is chaos, confusion and misdirection, particularly led by NICIL which has only added to the confusion,” he said.Ram outlined that based on the information he obtained, some of the children are inclined to miss classes as they lack school uniforms and lack basic meals. “Teachers are pooling money to give a meal to children. That child is a human being who is going to grow into an adult and what is he or she going to do?” he asked.Prior to the closures, observers including the political Opposition were calling for social impact studies to be conducted beforehand. Now that Government went ahead with its cost-cutting measures, many of the workers have held out that they are finding great difficulty in attaining well-paying and consistent employment. Some are of the view that these communities should be allocated subsidies for travel, text books, electricity and water owing to the vacuum that came to the fore when the industry was slashed.More than that, workers at Wales, were waiting almost two years for their severance pay due to their refusal to take up work at the Uitvlugt Estate which is 22 miles away from their homes. Though they were finally paid this month with interest, many parents said that in the interim they could not have afforded to send their children to school on a consistent basis. Goldcorp’s Musselwhite mine in northwest Ontario has become the first gold mining operation in Canada to be fully certified under the International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold. Musselwhite is an underground mine that produces some 250,000 oz/y of gold. The Cyanide Code is a voluntary industry program for companies involved in the production of gold using cyanide. It was developed under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Program with the goal of safeguarding human health and the environment by promoting responsible management of cyanide used in gold mining. Also, Goldcorp’s Marigold mine in Nevada has been re-certified under the Cyanide Code. Marigold is the first gold mine to undergo a second triennial Code audit and be found in full compliance. In 2007, Marigold became the first gold mining operation in the world to be fully certified. Along with Musselwhite and Marigold, Goldcorp’s El Sauzal mine in Mexico and Marlin mine in Guatemala have also been fully certified.“Our highest priority is the health and safety of our employees and of the communities in which we operate,” said Chuck Jeannes, Goldcorp CEO. “The certification of Musselwhite mine is another positive step forward in Goldcorp’s commitment to environmental stewardship and operating all of its mines responsibly and to the highest international standards.”Goldcorp says it is the lowest-cost and fastest growing multi-million ounce gold producer with operations throughout the Americas. Its gold production remains 100% unhedged.
Arch Coal has acquired a 35% equity interest in the Trailblazer Energy Center, which is being developed by Tenaska near Sweetwater, Texas. Trailblazer will rank among the world’s cleanest fossil-fuel-based power plants and act as a strategic source of carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) applications in West Texas. Moreover, Trailblazer will supply the Texas economy with an additional 600 MW of clean, secure, reliable electric generating capacity. “We are enthusiastic about partnering with Tenaska – a successful and highly respected leader in power plant development – to make the Trailblazer Energy Center a reality,” said David B. Peugh, Arch’s Vice President of Business Development. “Trailblazer will harness the most advanced coal-based technologies to supply secure, low-carbon production of electricity to the rapidly growing Texas marketplace. Furthermore, Trailblazer’s success could set the stage for a new generation of power plants fueled with America’s most abundant, reliable and cost-competitive fuel.”Tenaska Business Development President David Fiorelli said the partnership with Arch will bring a number of strategic benefits to the Trailblazer project. “The agreement is another indication of the significant progress Tenaska, as managing partner, is making in the development of the pioneering Trailblazer Energy Center,” said Fiorelli. “As one of the largest suppliers of low-sulphur Powder River Basin coal, Arch brings its 40 years of experience in the energy and coal industries. By working together, we will help lead the way to using our nation’s most abundant energy resource in an environmentally responsible manner.”In capturing 85 to 90% of the carbon dioxide emissions from the plant, Trailblazer will emit 70% less carbon dioxide than the cleanest natural gas-based power plants. Moreover, Trailblazer will ship the captured carbon dioxide to the nearby Permian Basin, where it will be used to boost oil production and extend the life of that critically important domestic energy resource. As part of the agreement, Arch will supply the plant’s fuel needs for the first 20 years of operation from its Powder River Basin operations in Wyoming.A recent Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) report projects that Texas will need to add more than 55 GW of new and replacement power-generating capacity over the next two decades to meet projected demand growth. In addition to Trailblazer, Arch’s technology portfolio includes an equity interest in DKRW Advanced Fuels, which is planning to convert coal into clean-burning transportation fuel on Arch reserves in southern Wyoming, and ADA-ES, a leading-edge emissions control company.Tenaska is one of the largest privately-owned energy companies in the US. Headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, it develops, constructs, owns and operates non-utility generation and cogeneration plants. The company also markets natural gas, biofuels and electric power, and provides risk management services. Tenaska is involved in asset acquisition, fuel supply, natural gas exploration, production and transportation systems, and electric transmission development. Tenaska has developed approximately 9,000 MW of electric generating capacity across the US. Tenaska’s affiliates operate and manage eight power plants in six states totaling more than 6,700 MW of generating capacity owned in partnership with other companies. In 2008, Tenaska was listed in benchmarking studies by the Natural Resources Defense Council as having the best fleet-wide record in the US for controlling emission of CO2 and as one of the top performing companies for controlling emissions of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide. For more information about Tenaska and the Trailblazer Energy Center, visit www.tenaska.com and www.tenaskatrailblazer.com. Arch’s investment will be staged over time as the development of the project reaches key milestones.
The Weir Group has agreed to acquire the Linatex group of companies, a global provider of wear-resistant products to the mining industry (see IM, April 2010). The acquisition is expected to be accretive from 2011 for Weir and its returns are expected to exceed Weir’s cost of capital from the second full year of ownership. The acquisition is in line with Weir’s strategy to grow its global capability, expand its emerging market footprint and further strengthen its aftermarket presence. The board of Weir believes that the acquisition will benefit the Group through:The addition both of the renowned Linatex brand and products that are strongly complementary to Weir’s existing offering in minerals processingEnhanced global reach, Linatex having a geographic footprint well-aligned to Weir, together with an established emerging market base served from core manufacturing facilities in Malaysia and ChinaSignificant potential for expansion in the Canadian oil sands market through newly developed Linatex equipment, adding to Weir’s existing presenceLeveraging Weir Minerals’ global sales network to sell Linatex’s market-leading rubber products which are highly complementary to Weir’s pumps, valves and cyclones, and offer many advantages over traditional metal linings.Commenting on the transaction, Weir’s Chief Executive, Keith Cochrane, said: “The acquisition of Linatex creates great opportunities for our Minerals division. The largest ever electric haul truck to be deployed in the Indian mining sector has been commissioned by Larsen & Toubro, the distributor of Komatsu equipment in India. Komatsu’s Model 830E-AC trucks with a payload capacity of 218 t were ordered by the mining giant, Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), a Vedanta Resources company, in Rajasthan. These are the first large trucks in India and are expected to lead to other large truck deployments in the country as it catchews on to the ‘economies of scale’ for moving huge volumes of overburden and ore. The Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone handset for underground two-way communications, has received MSHA approval for use in US coal mines. This is the latest component of MST’s tracking and communication system to be approved and completes the system’s ability to meet the conditions of the MINER Act 2006. The MinePhone is also relevant to hard rock mine operators, as MinePhones are already deployed in metalliferous mines. The MinePhone uses the MSHA approved ImPact Wi-Fi network or the standard non-IS ImPact network as the communication backbone to provide two way voice and texting along the primary and secondary escapeways underground. The MinePhone telephone handset allows private dialling between other phones in the network and the mine’s outside telephone system, as well as text messaging. Additionally, the MinePhone has 24 channels, Push to Talk functionality and emergency calling, emulating the functionally of many radios currently in use, but with many other functions available. The Wireless Network Switches (WNS’s) are the key part of the underground digital backbone and also act as readers for the Wi-Fi RFID Tags that are carried by miners underground, allowing a single communication network to provide both underground communication and tracking throughout the mine. “MST’s MinePhone is a breakthrough in underground voice and messaging communications, offering functionality never before available in coal mines” said Lloyd Zenari, CEO of MST. “The safety and productivity benefits for mining operations have quickly become apparent in metal mines and we expect the acceptance to be quicker still in coal operations”.
On February 22, Vale celebrated the laying of the first track of the Conakry-Kankan railroad, marking the start of the reconstruction of the main link between Conakry and Kankan in Guinea. In April 2010, Vale announced it would invest in Guinea’s Simandou, which will be the largest integrated iron ore mine and infrastructure project ever developed in Africa. Simandou’s first phase involves the development of the Zogota mine, with a dry processing plant, a dedicated railroad and a maritime terminal in the coast of Liberia, as well as a 100km rail spur connecting this railway to Zogota, in Guinea. The initial phase is scheduled to start production in 2012 and will have a capacity of 15 Mt/y. The project’s second phase involves capacity reaching 50 Mt/y in 2020, stemming from the development of blocks 1 and 2, and an additional rail spur connecting them to Zogota. The reconstruction of the Conakry-Kankan is part of Vale’s commitment to the development of Simandou and Guinea’s economic growth. As part of an agreement with the government of Guinea, Vale is investing to refurbish the railroad, used for passenger and general cargo transportation between Guinea’s Conakry capital city and Kankan in the eastern part of the country. With the railway’s rehabilitation, Vale aims to contribute to the social and economic development of the West African nation, potentially creating several thousands of jobs. With Simandou, Vale hopes to bring significant social and economic benefits to the Guinean population. The Conakry-Kankan line, run by the Office National des Chemins de Fer de Guinée, has not operated since 1983. The government’s goal is to rehabilitate the line in cooperation with Vale. The railway was initially built between 1900 and 1914 and had 45 stations. It plays an essential role by serving several towns and opening up the entire sub-region.
June 7-10 will see this event, which International Mining is attending, have a big impact on the Russian coal industry. One focus will be on mine safety. After a 9% economic downturn in 2009, Russia’s coal production showed a clear upward trend again in 2010. During the first nine months of the year output increased by 8%. By 2030 the Russian government is planning to have doubled its current coal production capacity. The number one among coal-mining areas is the Kuznetsk Basin which is estimated to have over 733,000 Mt of coal in its deposits. Moreover, according to gtai (Germany Trade and Invest), the Kuzbass region is right at the top of the Russian Federation in terms of production. Nearly 60% of all coal comes from the oblast’ (region) of Kemerovo where 110 mining companies and 35 coal processing companies are based. Five deposits were newly developed in 2010, a new processing plant was completed and 1,200 new jobs were created. It is precisely here, on the central square of the ‘coal capital’ Novokuznetsk that about 500 mining suppliers from 22 countries will be taking part in UGOL ROSSII & MINING (compared with 485 from 20 countries in 2010). In addition to well-known names from the Russian Federation, 150 international exhibitors will be coming from a range of different countries, including Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, France, the UK, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Japan, South Korea, the USA and China. There will also be joint stands from the federal state of Saarland in Germany, the UK, Poland and the Czech Republic – ideal conditions for cultivating existing customer contacts and developing new market shares in Russia. One highly topical emphasis at the moment is the issue of health and safety. Innovative technologies and know-how are more in demand than ever before. The Russian government has stepped up its health and safety stipulations, and nearly all companies are investing in the expansion of their capacities. In the Kuznetsk Basin alone companies are planning to invest double-digit millions in health & safety in the near future. Under the planned development activities this total is set to rise considerably over the next few years.UGOL ROSSII & MINING 2011 will include a special show entitled Safety & Security, where some 80 companies will be demonstrating personal protection equipment as well as systems and machinery for the early identification of explosive gases and the defence against such hazards.Organiser say Messe Düsseldorf says “German companies in Russia are optimistic about the future again. This is borne out by the latest economic climate poll taken by the German-Russian Chamber of Commerce (AHK) and the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations (over 130 companies). Nearly two thirds of companies in the survey are beginning to see a tangible recovery of the Russian economy. A year ago, this view was only taken by 12%. [Now] 87% are confident of a further economic upturn in 2011, while none of the companies believe in a return of the crisis in Russia.” www.ugol-mining.com
The Invest in Guinea initiative is organizing a briefing in London on June 12 2013 at the Royal Horseguards Hotel to promote the country’s mining code and encourage greater transparency and accountability. The objective of the new Mining Code amendments is to strengthen the competitiveness of Guineas in world commodity markets, and align the West African country with international-standard best practices while addressing the concerns and profitability of the investors as well as taking into account the long term economic development and wellbeing of the Guinean communities. An initiative of the Guinea Government, ‘Invest in Guinea’ is hosting the briefing to introduce the new mining code to international audiences and bring investors and journalists together to learn more about the benefits of the new code amendments and their role in encouraging long term sustainability within the

Novo Resources has announced gold-rich assay results from concentrates generated by mechanical sorting trials conducted on four bulk samples from its Karratha gold project in Western Australia. In order to test the potential viability of mechanical rock sorting as a means of concentrating gold from conglomerates at Karratha, four bulk samples were collected, crushed, screened and tested using a TOMRA mechanical rock sorter. High-grade assays from sorted rock concentrates have provided a first indication that this technique is effective at upgrading gold into small volume concentrates.Mechanical sorting was conducted on material ranging from 6 to 63 mm. Fractions larger than 63 mm and finer than 6 mm are currently undergoing assaying and, once all analyses have returned, an assessment of the effectiveness of mechanical rock sorting will be made, Novo said.Mechanical rock sorted concentrates range from 0.07-0.48% of total sample mass, a remarkably small fraction. Given the high-grade assays of these concentrates, ranging from 92.1-792.4 g/t Au, it appears gold is being significantly upgraded by mechanical rock sorting, the company added.“Optimising crushing to reduce volumes of fines and oversize, effectively maximising the amount of material being sorted, should further improve the potential of this technology,” Novo said, adding that mechanical sorting technology could be a critical component of the Karratha gold project moving forward.Rob Humphryson, CEO and Director of the company, said: “Concentrate grades received from the recent TOMRA mechanical rock sorting trials are impressive, reflecting the capability of the scanning and sorting technology to differentially select gold bearing rock.“Total system gold recovery efficiency will be fully understood upon receipt of assay results from all process streams and feed size ranges, with these results expected during January 2019.”
Dacian Gold has declared commercial production at its Mt Morgans gold operation in Western Australia, some nine months after producing its first gold bar at the mine. The declaration, made on January 1, followed combined mining rates across the operation achieving feasibility study-design levels during the December quarter, the company said.Production for the December quarter totalled 37,930 oz, a significant increase on the prior quarter and in line with the company’s guidance of progressively increasing output throughout its 2019 financial year. Gold poured for that quarter totalled 38,479 oz.Dacian said underground mining was now underway across all three declines at Westralia (Beresford South, Beresford North and Allanson), while, at the Jupiter open pit, higher‐grade ore in the Cornwall Shear Zone was expected to be mined later in the current March quarter. This combined progress across the operation will support continued operational momentum and underpin further quarterly increases in production throughout the remainder of Dacian’s 2019 financial year, the company said.Dacian Gold Executive Chairman and CEO Rohan Williams said the declaration of commercial production was another example of the company meeting its development and production targets.“We are pleased to have achieved this important milestone – exactly when we said we would,” he said. “It was an outstanding quarter, with production increasing 30% from the September quarter.”Mt Morgans is expected to produce around 200,000 oz/y of gold at an all-in sustaining cost of around A$1,000/oz ($716/oz) when fully ramped up. This will come from a reserve base that totals 1.4 Moz.
Underground vehicle specialist Aramine says it has signed a partnership agreement with Russia uranium producer, ARMZ, for the assembly of its L140B battery-powered miniLoader. The pact was signed by ARMZ Uranium Holdings’ Director General, Vladimir Verkhovtsev, and Aramine Presidents, Marc Melkonian and Christophe Melkonian, during the 23rd International Mining World Russia Exhibition, in Moscow.“Production of Aramine battery loaders will improve the working conditions of the miners, increase the level of safety and, of course, increase the volume of ore mining,” Verkhovtsev said.Just a few months ago, Aramine looked to extend the continuous working time of its battery-powered miniLoader L140B by providing a battery change-out option. This miniLoader L140B, launched in 2017, is an optimised and advanced version of the L120B, carrying more capacity – 1.3 t. While the company’s new option allows the machine to run full time without being immobilised during charging, the standard L140B offers four hours of continuous operation. This allows for the mucking of three to four faces in one shift with a simple charging system integrated into the machine and requiring a plug to the wall, according to the company. The miniLoader does not require massive electrical installation, with the power required only being about 7 kW, compared with the 45 kW typically needed for an electric machine with cable, the company said.ARMZ recently announced plans to reduce the level of risk both underground and above-ground at its industrial complexes, with Verkhovtsev saying the company was looking at, among other things, automation and implementation of the most modern technologies at its operations.

The last five years have been exciting, demanding, challenging and often frustrating. But they have also been some of the most rewarding and enjoyable of my career – thanks to the skill of wonderful people across TV3 and particularly my talented and enthusiastic team in the Programme Department. In an interview with TheJournal.ie in August, Frow indicated he had had a difficult time overcoming the financial limitations of the broadcasting market here. He told reporter Hugh O’Connell:This has been a brutal, brutal, brutal year for me personally, much harder than 2008 and 2009 (his first full years at TV3). Financially it’s been a lot tougher, we don’t seem to be coming out of any kind of recession. Our ambition is limitless but we can only do so much unless some people step up to the plate and help us out a bit. The team are good but we’re not miracle workers. This referred to the continuing public funding support for RTÉ as well as the revenue they yield from commercial advertising. In that interview, he also referred to the personal toll the post was taking on him.I’m a bit knackered by the whole thing frankly. It’s exhausting and it’s really demoralising… I find it utterly depressing that no one will step up to the plate and it’s like nobody cares, you know? I think TV3 has such an important role to play in this country. It’s an independent voice, you can’t just have RTÉ dominating everything. Everyone seems to be utterly terrified of rattling RTÉ’s cage.He also said that he felt there was “an inherent snobbery towards TV3″ and that “maybe commerciality and snobs don’t go in hand”.While Frow said that he felt a great responsiblity to the commissioning team and to the channel as a while, he felt that there is “very little room for taking a risk on TV3 because we have such responsibilities, financial responsibilities, there’s no room for chucking… burning money because Ben’s got a whimsy that may or may not work.Reacting to the announcement of Frow’s departure today, TV3 chief executive David McRedmond said that he felt Frow had made a “distinctive and brilliant mark” on Irish broadcasting and that he was happy that he had been able to persuade him to stay so long. He added:While I am extremely sad that Ben is leaving TV3, he has all of mine and my colleagues’ gratitude and he leaves with our very best wishes.TV3 has yet to make a decision on a replacement for Frow at the helm of commissioning. Frow was responsible for launching TV3 shows such as Celebrity Salon, The Forgotten Irish, The Tenements, Dublin Wives, Tallafornia, Midweek, Celebrity Salon as well as bringing Irish version of Come Dine with Me and The Apprentice to air.- additional reporting by Hugh O’ConnellA ‘brutal, brutal, brutal’ year: Ben Frow interview> THE DIRECTOR OF Programming at TV3 is to leave the station at the end of this year. Ben Frow will finish up at the Ballymount broadcaster at the end of December, returning to the UK where he had previously worked at Channel 4, among other media companies. In a statement today, Frow said that it had been a “privilege and a pleasure” to work with TV3 and increase the volume of its homegrown programming. THE NUMBER OF Irish people who have joined the networking and recruitment social network LinkedIn has officially passed one million. However not all of them actually live in the country, with more than 10 per cent – 100,000 people – living and working abroad. That’s just some of the information released by the social network – which has an estimated 259 million users worldwide – about its user base in Ireland to coincide with the landmark figure, including details about the most popular companies, colleges and sectors. The LinkedIn figures show that the three most popular – i.e. most frequently cited companies – among Irish members are, in order, the HSE, AIB and Bank of Ireland.Meanwhile University College Dublin is the most popular university, followed by DIT and then Trinity College Dublin.LinkedIn said that the hi-tech industry is the biggest sector in terms of employment of users, followed by financial services and construction, reflecting the areas which have high numbers of graduates and jobseekers.Around 50 per cent of the Irish diaspora members are based in Europe, where they are most likely to work in the hi-tech industry, LinkedIn said, while emigrants living in Australia are most likely to work in construction. Emigrants to the UK are most likely to work in finance while US emigrants are also most likely to be working in technology.Sharon McCooey of LinkedIn said that Irish members ‘are one of the most engaged audiences in the world’. The social network employs more than 400 people at its international headquarters in Dublin. The one million figure does not include details on how many people actually use their account. EDUCATION MINISTER RUAIRÍ Quinn has confirmed that 170 new special needs assistants (SNAs) will be appointed immediately with further 220 to be employed next year.It follows Cabinet approval of a proposal by Quinn to increase the cap on the number of SNAs working in the State. Approval today means that the total number of SNAs in the country will be 10,965 when the recruitment process concludes. The Department of Education said these extra posts will ensure that government policy of ensuring that every child who is assessed as needing SNA support will receive such support. The previous government imposed a cap on the number of SNAs at 10,575 in 2010, however the number of pupils in need of SNA has increased since them.“Despite our economic difficulties, we need to support our children with special needs to achieve their full potential in school,” Ruairí Quinn said today. The decision today was welcomed by the trade union IMPACT, which represents the majority of SNAs, whose official Dessie Robinson said: “The recent practice of allocating portions of SNA posts to schools, rather than full-time SNAs, has placed further financial and organisational pressure on schools working to educate children with special needs.“These full-time posts are very welcome and will go some way to meeting the increased demand in our schools. We hope it is also a sign that the casualisation of the SNA role is being addressed.”The National Council for Special Education will allocate the new SNA posts on the basis of need following assessment, the Department of Education said.Budget 2014: 455 extra resource teaching posts announcedMicheál Martin: Reversing special needs assistants cutbacks is only fair
THE VICE-CHAIR of recent talks in Northern Ireland has warned of a “darker downside” to not finding a way forward on political issues.Meghan O’Sullivan was speaking to RTÉ’s Prime Time programme this evening and said that it’s already been seen that the inability of parties to compromise has led to violence:There could be an even darker downside. Which is the fact we’ve seen issues around parades and flags lead to political and social unrest, and even violence in some cases. And a conditioned stagnation or stalemate on these issues could fuel more protests and could fuel rejectionists on both sides of the spectrum.O’Sullivan said that if there isn’t compromise on the three issues of “the past, flags and emblems and issues of identity, and parades” then it would be ”a major loss for Northern Ireland”. Failure could, “bog down that society and prevent it being prosperous and free”, she said.O’Sullivan made a plea to all parties to look at the draft deal put forward by her and talks chair Richard Haass as a whole, and not focus on the areas to which they disagree.“There was not a single party that got everything it wanted and there certainly wasn’t a single party that didn’t get a good bit of what it wanted,” she said. There needs to be on the part of every single party a willingness to say ‘We got what we needed here, we didn’t get what we wanted here. But we can look at this package as an overall package and we can make the case both to the people of Northern Ireland and to our particular constituencies that overall this is a good agreement.’“Obviously not all parties were willing to do that,” she added.O’Sullivan’s direct intervention comes a day after she and Haass released a joint statement saying that they felt that some elements in the process were being “unrealistic in the extreme”.They urged parties to keep working towards compromise and this point was reiterated by O’Sullivan tonight saying that, “I’m not yet ready to acknowledge failure per se. These talks and the agreement is still open and in play.”O’Sullivan described the negotiation process as “different to the Good Friday Agreement process”. This she explained to Miriam O’Callaghan was primarily because, although the Irish and British governments were kept informed of the talks, the talks were “about internal political issues”.Read: Richard Haass says some in Northern Ireland are being ‘unrealistic in the extreme’ >Column: Failure of Haass talks highlights two serious problems in modern Northern Ireland >
PLANS FOR BETTER perinatal hospice care in Ireland were discussed in Leinster House today. One Day More met with members of the Oireachtas to talk about the plans and to highlight the group’s new support network for parents of unborn babies with terminal illness. One Day More is a group of families who had a child diagnosed prenatally with severe disabilities. The group also launched their website today and a video of interviews with parents who opted against abortion after a poor pre-natal diagnosis.Spokesperson for One Day More Cliona Johnson said: Today is an important day for families of unborn babies with life-shortening conditions. One Day More is committed to delivering much improved peri-natal hospice care services in this country.Johnson believes there’s been a “disproportionate” focus of abortions in cases of babies with terminal illnesses. It is really sad that some people think abortion is the obvious answer when a life shortening condition is diagnosed. I believe attitudes would change considerably if more attention was given to the real life stories of women who opted against abortion and chose to keep their babies in these situations. The group have begun fundraising and also aim to seek support from the Government for perinatal hospice care.Another group Terminations for Medical Reasons (TFMR) have raised awareness of the issues facing Irish women who have made the “heartbreaking” choice to terminate pregnancies due to fatal foetal abnormalities.Irish people have to travel to the UK for a termination.Their website outlines how:We have all been traumatised, shocked and appalled that at our greatest time of need, our country turned its back on us and made us feel like criminals. TV3 ensured that the gun effect on Brain Hacker was aired after the 9pm watershed and as late as possible into the show.Within the actual effect itself, Keith (under fully supervised conditions) attempts to demonstrate just how dangerous even a “blank” bullet can be (by destroying the apple), so at all times viewers are reminded of the absolute dangers involved in the effect.Barry also defended the broadcast: “I have trained extensively for years to accomplish the stunts I perform. Using a combination of hypnosis/persuasion and heightened intuition I am in the position to be able to perform the impossible”, he said.Throughout my career I have included danger stunts in the form of entertainment and look forward to performing many many more in the future. At no time should anyone attempt to replicate what I do.Keith Barry: Brain Hacker continues this Sunday at 9pm on TV3.Here’s what to expect from Graham Linehan’s new Irish sitcom>Republic of Telly’s take on Transfer Deadline Day is pretty funny> MENTALIST KEITH BARRY’s latest Brain Hacker stunt didn’t go down too well with some TV3 viewers. The broadcaster confirmed that it has received 20 complaints in relation to a Russian Roulette style segment featured in a recent episode of the series.During Sunday night’s episode Barry loaded one of three pistols with a blank cartridge before asking a member of the audience to shuffle the guns. He then proceeded to pick up two of them at random, point them at his own head, and pull the trigger.Neither of the guns he selected were loaded and he used the third to shoot an apple, revealing the extent of the damage which the bullet could have caused. However, some viewers argued that watching Barry pull the triggers of the unloaded weapons had been distressing.A spokesperson for the broadcaster defended the decision to air the stunt, highlighting the fact that the show carried a warning at both the beginning of the programme and the end.

THOSE WAITING FOR Valve to release its console this year will have to wait a little while longer before it’s ready for release. In a recent update on its blog, Valve developer Eric Hope has said the company is now looking at “a release date of 2015, not 2014″ as it continues to fine-tune the controller. It put the reason down to the system’s wireless controllers, which it is currently testing. It said that making improvements to the controller has meant the release date had to be pushed back to ensure it provides the “best experience possible” when it’s released.Obviously we’re just as eager as you are to get a Steam Machine in your hands. But our number one priority is making sure that when you do, you’ll be getting the best gaming experience possible. We hope you’ll be patient with us while we get there. Until then, we’ll continue to post updates as we have more stories to share. The Steam controller has two touchpads instead of analogue sticks on its front, designed to offer players precise control when playing games. ©INPHO/James CrombieThe scorer of their vital second goal, Ross Wherity, looks capable of ruffling a few feathers off the bench in a pretty unconventional ‘Tony Cascarino’ kind of way, but they will go with the same 17 or 18 players they had last year, as demonstrated by the familiarity of the two players who came in as late injury replacements for Karl Lacey and Mark McHugh. So what’s changed? What have they added? Well, by the looks of last Sunday, they appear to have added a further 25% to Paddy McBrearty’s talents, who with every passing game looks more and more capable of becoming another Michael Murphy, as he was so confidently billed when he first burst on the scene two years ago.Upward curveWith a young player you expect peaks and troughs – a stellar debut perhaps, followed by a couple of quiet games, before he lights up again. Or a poor second season, followed by consolidation of his gifts the year after. McBrearty has defied all of that thinking though, having shown a steeply upward curve in his performance from the moment we first saw him in a Donegal senior jersey. On Sunday he was instrumental in the two goals, capable of scoring himself, and looked for all the world like a seasoned veteran. In the absence of adding some extra scoring oomph to their half-forward line, they have benefited from the fast-track maturation of a guy who will be in the top five footballers in the country for the next seven or eight years.©INPHO/Presseye/Russell PritchardHas the game-plan changed? Not appreciably. It’s important to note that Tyrone have now had three games to try and figure Donegal out, to no avail. What Donegal now have in their armory is the confidence of winners. Tyrone’s best spell came either side of half-time, and in the first ten minutes of the second half in particular Donegal barely touched the ball. But as Tyrone wailed away at Donegal’s midriff, the champions rope-a-doped, and McBrearty broke their will with that lightning break down along the right wing to set up Wherity’s goal. He kicked the next score himself, and set up Michael Murphy for the one after that. Game over. They were outplayed for 13 minutes, and then killed the game off in the five minutes after that. Impressive, impressive stuff.Tyrone were dismantled here in the last 20 minutes and it will take a long time for them to recover from this. But given Tyrone’s stellar play in the league, and how over the course of 70 minutes Donegal gradually put the lie to all they thought they knew about themselves, I wonder what Jim Gavin was thinking.I wonder will he be taking another look at Paul Mannion’s willowy frame in training tomorrow night, and thinking to himself how much he can believe in what’s he’s seen in his first six months in the job. A Dublin-supporting friend of mine texted me after about 50 minutes of the action had elapsed in Ballybofey – “this is a bad advertisement for the league.”And it’s only natural to be thinking like that now – Donegal are the team to beat. We’ll have plenty of time to ask questions about McGuinness’ involvement with Celtic, and the parties that were had celebrating Sam’s return, and how impossible it is to retain your All-Ireland title… but right now, they are out on their own, on merit.Elsewhere of course, London finally did what they have been threatening to do for the last number of years, and won a game in the Connacht championship, which means they go forward to play Leitrim in the semi-final.©INPHO/Jim KeoghThe winners are guaranteed a place in the last 12 of the All-Ireland championship. It was said before Sligo lost this game that it was an unbelievably easy route to what is supposed to be where the championship really hots up – so the fact that London won on Sunday doesn’t definitively change the point I’m trying to make here. But Tyrone will have to win three games to get to that stage, having already played out a war with the best team in the country. It’s just not fair, and Leitrim people would tell you that just as quickly as anyone else. The base requirement for any sporting competition should be that to win, everyone has to play an equal amount of games. It’s not going to change any time soon, and maybe it’ll never change at all – but it’s worth pointing out these injustices anyway, because it’s idiotic. This week Murph was – talking to a former inter-county player about the build-up to the game in Ballybofey, and how he couldn’t remember looking forward to a first round game as much since the 1994 game between then All-Ireland champions Derry, and soon-to-be-crowned champions Down. For those of you who are too young to remember just how good a game it was, you should check it out.Mickey Linden… jaysis.YouTube credit: Bryansford GaelSee how London won their first Connacht SFC game in 36 yearsEamonn O’Hara calls on Sligo boss Kevin Walsh to resign after London loss WE’VE SEEN IT for years in soccer – teams win the league, don’t buy reinforcements in the summer, and can’t retain their titles. To stay still is to go backwards. So when Donegal named the exact same team for their match against Tyrone in Ballybofey yesterday as which played Mayo in the All-Ireland final last September, we had cause to take a moment. The considered wisdom is that you have to find two or three lads over the winter that can revitalize your squad. Donegal didn’t really find anyone over the course of this year’s league, but then again I’m starting to be shocked that they managed to fulfill all seven fixtures in Division 1, such is their (in my opinion, well-placed) disregard for that competition.
THREE AND A half decades after the genocidal rule of Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge ended, a UN-backed war crimes tribunal has found two of the regime leaders guilty.Khieu Samphan, the regime’s 83-year-old former president, and Nuon Chea, its 88-year-old chief ideologue, have been sentenced to life in prison for their role in the 1970s terror. Both men, in dire health, denied any wrongdoing. They are the first of the regimes leaders to have been held accountable for the atrocities.Mass killing The case, covering the forced exodus of millions of people from Cambodia’s towns and cities and a mass killing, is just part of the Cambodian story.Nearly a quarter of the population died under their rule, through a combination starvation, medical neglect, overwork and execution when the group held power in 1975-79.Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea were both been charged with crimes against humanity, genocide, religious persecution, homicide and torture. Both men are in frail health and have required occasional hospitalisation during the trial.Khieu Samphan acknowledged that mass killings took place. But testifying before the court in 2011, he claimed he was just a figurehead who had no real authority. He denied ordering any executions himself, calling the allegations a “fairy tale.” Instead, he blamed Pol Pot, the group’s top leader, who died in 1998, for its extreme policies. Nuon Chea, who was the Khmer Rouge’s chief ideologist and No. 2 leader, is seen on a screen during his final statements at the U.N.-backed war crimes tribunal in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Source: Heng SinithKhieu Samphan also said he believed when he was young, that communism — which Khmer Rouge cadres took to the extreme, virtually enslaving the entire population in a bid to create an agrarian utopia — had given him hope when he was young, and the movement had opposed a pro-Western regime and neighboring Vietnam, Cambodia’s traditional enemy.Nuon Chea, who is known as Brother No. 2 for being Pol Pot’s trusted deputy, has appeared less repentant. At the start of the trial, in 2011, he blamed Vietnamese forces for killing Cambodians.“I don’t want them to believe the Khmer Rouge are bad people, are criminals,” he said of those observing to the trial. “Nothing is true about that.”Many criticised the slow justice and its cost. The tribunal, formally known as the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and comprising of Cambodian and international jurists, began operations in 2006. It has since spent more than $200 million, yet it has only convicted one defendant — prison director Kaing Guek Eav, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2011. tourists walk through the ground dotted with mass graves of the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime at the Choeung Ek killing field in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Source: AP/Press Association ImagesAge and poor health Because of the advanced age and poor health of the defendants, the case against them was divided into separate smaller trials in an effort to render justice before they die. Both defendants face a second trial that is due to start by year’s end, this time on charges of genocide. That trial is expected to take years to complete.Suon Mom, 75-year-old woman whose husband and four children starved to death during the Khmer era, said she was keen to see justice finally served, even if it is generations late.“My anger remains in my heart,” she said. “I still remember the day I left Phnom Penh, walking along the road without having any food or water to drink.”Some say the money that financed the trial should have been spent on helping survivors instead, or on the impoverished country’s infrastructure.Chea Chhunleng, a 23-year-old business student, said he was not opposed to harsh sentences for the two leaders, but said the trial could not change the past.It “can only provide justice … only the word justice. That is all,” he said.Read: Cambodia genocide defendant ruled unfit for trial>Read: Pol Pot’s deputy tells court: Khmer Rouge ‘were not bad people’>

Harrison Ford, known for iconic movie roles such as Han Solo, Indiana Jones and Rick Deckard in Blade Runner, is getting into social gaming. Ford is supporting the development of a new game for Facebook which has an eco-friendly theme. It’s called Ecotopia, and is being made in collaboration with Conservation International. Founded in 1987, Conservation International is a non-profit organization which encourages responsible care of the global environment. The connection between Conservation International and Harrison Ford is not a new one. Ford has been affiliated with the organization for over 15 years and is Vice-Chair of the group’s Board of Directors. He is also known for actually piloting a chopper with the group in the jungles of Venezuela. Ford states that he believes Ecotopia is a refreshing way to engage millions of people in addressing critical environmental issues.Talkie, an independent game studio, developed Ecotopia which it plans to launch on Facebook on April 4th. The goal of the game is to create a personal utopia by battling eco-enemies including litterbugs. Players of the game begin with an uninhabitable environment which they must turn into a thriving community through the use of resources generated by the completion of in-game missions. Ecotopia will be free to play and will be developed for other platforms too. In the Facebook version of the game players will be able to connect with Facebook friends to send gifts and to encourage them to visit neighboring maps to perform helpful actions.Ecotopia is said to be the first game that encourages players to take environmentally friendly actions in the real-world to receive benefits in the game world. While participating in the game, players will also learn more about Conservation International and its many initiatives to improve the sustainability of the global environment.Read more at EcotopiaBrian’s OpinionFacebook has quite a reach when you consider that it has over 500 million members. Social gaming on Facebook has also begun to develop a life of its own with many game studios reaping the rewards. It’s good to see a non-profit group has realized the benefits of both and created a new game that enlightens those who play it.Besides Ford’s many movie roles and the entertainment it has brought me personally, I also appreciate his willingness to roll up his sleeves and get involved with a group that he believes shares his beliefs when it comes to the environment. While many famous actors and actresses are more than happy to share their time in doing a simple fundraiser or a television spot, it’s a unique group that actually gets involved at this level.
Not many people would voluntarily choose the world’s second largest desert as the location to test out some new experiments. However, industrial designer and inventor Markus Kayser chose the Sahara desert for its abundance of sand and sun, providing both the energy and raw materials needed for his ambitious projects.Kayser carried his first invention, called the Sun Cutter, to the Egyptian desert in a suitcase. This solar-powered machine is a semi-automated low-tech laser cutter. It uses the energy of the sun for power. The sun’s rays reflect through a glass ball lens to create a “laser” cutter that cuts 2D pieces of material using a system guided by a camera. It cuts through thin plywood to make rough and unfinished-looking cuts, which Kayser turned into some hipster-looking “sunglasses,” seen below.Kayser’s time spent in the desert working on the Sun Cutter gave him an idea for his next project, the Solar Sinter. The sun is a huge source of potential energy, and the sand in deserts “give an unlimited supply of silica in the form of quartz.” The inventor took those two things into considering while working with the Sun Cutter, and came up with the idea to create a new machine that could use both the sand and the sun.Although it’s not a new discovery, Silica sand, when heated to melting point and then cooled, turns into glass. The process is known as sintering and relates to heating a powdery substance and converting it into a solid form. It’s been a big part of 3D printing in the past few years. 3D printers use laser technology to create intricate 3D objects from an array of powdered plastics, resins, and metals. The Sun Sinter uses the sun’s rays in lieu of a laser, and sand in lieu of the materials mentioned above. Kayser tested his first manually-operated solar-sintering machine in February 2011 in the Moroccan desert. He then built a larger and fully-automated computer-driven version which was completed in mid-May. He tested it in the Sahara desert near Siwa, Egypt for two weeks, creating the video you see below.Kayser envisions the Sun Sinter as a “new solar-powered production tool of great potential.” You can see the machine etching various shapes into the sand to produce a product like the bowl shown above. At the end of the video, we see Kayser “cleaning up” his materials, which literally just means dumping the excess sand back into the desert.Read more at MarkusKayser.com, via This is Colossal
Rovio is attempting to, and has succeeded for the most part in getting Angry Birds on to every available platform. They’ve even had some help catering to outdated platforms with the game appearing on the Sega Genesis.Lots of platforms means a number of input methods, and Angry Birds on PC/Mac just got new one in the form of a custom force-feedback USB controller. We’ve already seen a USB slingshot created for the game, but this project is a little more advanced. It’s called the Super Angry Birds (SAB) controller, and gives you complete control over the angle and force used to fire the bird out of the slingshot. It even includes a detonator for use with those special birds. To SAB controller was created in a Haptics class at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design by Hideaki Matsui and Andrew Spitz. It brought together a range of technology including a motorized fader more commonly found in an audio mixing console, an electric motor, and an Arduino board. The fader is what slides back and forth to simulate the slingshot on-screen. The electric motor is used to apply an opposing force to catapult the bird and provide the force-feedback. Matsui and Spitz then created a force curve so they could track the force applied and transmit the appropriate input to the game. All programming was done using the visual programming tool MAX.It certainly adds something to the game that you won’t get from the more typical key or touchscreen input. If they could package this controller up into a more compact, cleaner unit, I bet they’d get backing on Kickstarter to ship it.Read more at sound + design
Rejoice, Windows 8 users who don’t like that pesky Start Screen getting in your way after every boot sequence. Microsoft might let you flip a switch and jump straight to the desktop in Windows 8.1.Leaked builds of the first Windows Blue update have been floating around the web for a while now. The latest features a revamped twinui.dll file that looks like it will check either a registry key or policy setting to see if a user wants the Start Screen displayed.Russian blog Microsoft Portal spotted the value, which is tagged CanSuppressStartScreen in the DLL’s inner workings.Unless this toggle happens to pop up in the expanded Start Screen personalization options, it’s clear that this is aimed squarely at enterprise environments. The Start Screen and Windows 8’s dual interfaces have been heavily criticized by some, and Microsoft is no doubt considering all kinds of adjustments that will make Windows 8.1 a little more appealing to IT administrators.Since it’s already possible to shoehorn something similar (just add Explorer.exe to the CurrentVersion\Run registry key), Microsoft may have decided that adding a policy option makes sense. Policy settings, however, only apply to Windows Pro or Enterprise versions.Does that mean this won’t be offered to home users? Not necessarily. Windows 8.1 won’t be ready for public consumption for a few more months, so there’s plenty of time for Microsoft to add a switch somewhere in the revamped PC settings screens. After all, Windows 8 home will skip the Start Screen with the aforementioned registry hack, too.

As a journalist, I couldn’t just run away to save my skin.” The winner of the World Press Photo of the year Source: Burhan Ozbilici/AP PhotoThe powerful photo went viral and has been viewed some 18 million times.Judges from the World Press Photo Foundation in Amsterdam acknowledged it had been tough to choose the 2017 winner from over 80,400 images by 5,034 photographers from 125 countries.“It was a very, very difficult decision, but in the end we felt that the picture of the year was an explosive image that really spoke to the hatred of our times,” said jury member Mary Calvert.Agence France-Presse also scooped three awards. Manila-based photographer Noel Celis took third place in the General News category for his photo of inmates trying to sleep in an over-populated prison in the city.Syrian snappers Abd Doumany and Ameer Alhalbi won second prize in the Spot News category for pictures of children caught up in the bombardments of Aleppo and Douma near Damascus. It is the second year in the row that Doumany’s work has been honoured by the World Press Photo foundation.‘Morally problematic’But the winning photo sparked dissensions on the jury, with president Stuart Franklin, a British photographer, saying: “I voted against. Sorry, Burhan.”“It’s a photograph of a murder, the killer and the slain, both seen in the same picture, and morally as problematic to publish as a terrorist beheading,” he wrote in The Guardian. He argued that “placing the photograph on this high pedestal is an invitation to those contemplating such staged spectaculars.”Ozbilici, who covered the failed coup bid in Turkey and been sent on mission to Syria, Libya and Egypt, said he always tried to be ready for difficult tests, “to have the courage to confront a world which has been made rotten by the dishonest and corrupt, in order to try to do some good.”He said he was sorry for the death of the envoy, whom he described as a “natural, kind, sincere man” whose death was a direct consequence of the “Syrian catastrophe.”“This photo marked an important moment in the history of Turkey, especially in its relations with Russia,” said Ozbilici, who has worked for AP since 1989.‘Edge of abyss’Jury members agreed his photo captured an important moment in time.“Right now, I see the world marching towards the edge of an abyss,” said jury member Joao Silva, referring to Altintas as a man who had “clearly reached a breaking point. This image to me talks of everything that is happening across the world. It is the face of hatred.A total of 45 photographers won awards across eight categories, touching on a vast array of subjects – from racial tensions in Louisiana to walls built around the world to thwart migrants.Jury member Tanya Habjouqa said the choice of the 2017 winners was “bold”.“I think the selection is definitely going to push forward a debate and I think it is a debate that is essential to have,” she said. The competition itself was directly affected by the travel measures brought in by US President Donald Trump, when one of the nine jury members, Palestinian Eman Mohammed, cancelled her trip to Amsterdam.Amid the chaos unleashed by the ban, she decided it was too risky to leave her young children in the US where she lives, fearing she might not be allowed back in again.- © AFP 2017Read: The 27 photographs that took our breath away in 2016 27,127 Views Monday 13 Feb 2017, 9:54 PM
File photo Image: bedimage via Shutterstock 7,751 Views File photo Source: Simon Harris TD/Twitter Image: bedimage via Shutterstock Updated 7.55amTHIS MONTH STARTED off with 601 patients on trolleys and in wards, waiting on a bed, according to the latest figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation. While the trolley figures relate directly to accident and emergency departments, the ward figures count the number of additional patients on trolleys and chairs in excess of the listed capacity of these wards, which intends to give a general overall picture of overcrowding in hospitals. The Irish Association of Emergency Medicine described the latest figures on trolleys as “Groundhog Day”.Many of the major Dublin hospitals had in excess of 20 patients on trolleys, with Beaumont (38 patients) and Tallaght Hospital (41) having the highest number in the capital.Further afield, the highest numbers across the country could be found in University Hospital Limerick (48), Cork University Hospital (43) and University Hospital Waterford (38).The overall number of patients on trolleys had been declining over the course of this month, after reaching a peak at the beginning of January. In the trolley watch figures for Monday 30 January, there were only 445 people on hospital trolleys, with increase in numbers in Dublin hospitals such as Connolly Hospital and St James’s Hospital helping to raise the trolley watch figures above 600 to kick off February. The high number of hospital admissions at the beginning of January led to national ambulance service members reporting delays of between one and three hours admitting patients to A&E.The crisis in emergency departments saw Health Minister Simon Harris describing the situation as a “perfect storm”. The latest figure of 601 patients on beds is only just short of the record high 612 observed on 3 January.Responding to the current trolley situation, the Irish Association of Emergency Medicine said in a statement: “Yearly ‘plans’ and ‘Winter Initiatives / Plans’ have failed to address the issue and the HSE continues to condemn further patients to this very unsafe situation day in, day out.How long do we have to remain stuck in this loop where there is a clear solution to the problem (the creation of additional bed capacity) and this solution is deliberately ignored? If no improvement is made in the next year, they fear that another 300 to 350 patients will have died needlessly by this date next year.Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Consultant in Emergency Medicine Fergal Hickey said that they were “very sure” that up to 350 patients would die, who otherwise would not have died, by this time next year if overcrowding continued. This opinion is based on studies from Australia, which they have applied to the Irish situation.“The evidence is very clear on this,” Hickey said. He added that at least one or two die unnecessarily in his own hospital in Sligo due to this problem each year.“I’ve had to apologise to families where their experience has resulted in a bad outcome,” he said. The key issue is the shortage of beds. There was a shortage of beds before austerity, and this shortage was worsened by austerity. He pointed to a decrease in beds in the face of increasing demand as exacerbating the problem.Hickey added that restoration of around 1800 beds he said were taken away during austerity, and the provision of several hundred more would be an essential first step in relieving the burden of high numbers on trolleys.Simon Harris responded at the time of the programme airing by tweeting the measures he believes will alleviate the problem. ‘Groundhog Day’ as month begins with 600 people on hospital trolleys The figure of 601 is just short of the high of 612 patients on trolleys at the beginning of January. Image: Nick Ansell/PA Wire Updated at 4.05pmBRITAIN’S FOREIGN SECRETARY Boris Johnson has cancelled a scheduled visit to Moscow next week, saying “developments in Syria have changed the situation fundamentally”.“My priority is now to continue contact with the US and others in the run up to the G7 meeting on 10-11 April,” said Johnson, who was due to travel to Moscow on Monday.“We deplore Russia’s continued defence of the Assad regime even after the chemical weapons attack on innocent civilians,” added Johnson. He then called on Russia to do “everything possible to bring about a political settlement in Syria and work with the rest of the international community to ensure that the shocking events of the last week are never repeated”.“I discussed these plans in detail with Secretary Tillerson,” Johnson said, adding that the US foreign minister would still visit Moscow as planned following the G7 meeting to “deliver that clear and co-ordinated message to the Russians”.USEarlier, the US warned it is ready to hit Syria again after the missile strike that infuriated Moscow and fueled calls for a push to end the six-year war.US Ambassador Nikki Haley delivered the warning at an emergency session of the UN Security Council called after the US strikes, which were launched to punish an alleged chemical weapons attack by Bashar al-Assad’s regime.Russia, meanwhile, declared President Donald Trump’s first strike against the Damascus regime a violation of international law and an “act of aggression.”“The United States took a very measured step last night,” Haley told the council. We are prepared to do more, but we hope it will not be necessary.Haley said the strike destroyed an air field from which Washington believes Damascus launched the attack on rebel-held Khan Sheikhun, where 86 people including 27 children died this week.Rights monitors warned, however, that Syrian jets were already flying sorties from the base again as night fell yesterday. The United States fired 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles from warships in the Mediterranean at the Shayrat airfield near Homs in central Syria.Assad’s office called the strike “foolish and irresponsible,” and Moscow announced a series of retaliatory steps including plans to strengthen Syrian air defenses.“The United States will no longer wait for Assad to use chemical weapons without any consequences,” Haley said. Those days are over.Russia accuses US United States’ Ambassador United Nations and current Security Council President Nikki Haley. Source: Mary AltafferThe United States did not seek UN Security Council authorisation for the military action that followed days of global outrage at images of dead children from the suspected sarin gas attack. It was Trump’s biggest military decision since taking office and marked a dramatic escalation in American involvement in Syria’s protracted war.“The United States attacked the territory of sovereign Syria,” Russian Deputy Ambassador Vladimir Safronkov told the council, denouncing a “flagrant violation of international law and an act of aggression.”US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, in Florida to attend a summit between Trump and China’s Xi Jinping, is due in Moscow next week for talks with President Vladimir Putin.“I’m disappointed in that response from the Russians because it indicates their continued support for the Assad regime,” said Tillerson.“In particular,” he said, the response showed the Kremlin’s “continued support for a regime that carries out these kinds of horrendous attacks on their own people.“I find it very disappointing but — sadly, I have to tell you — not all that surprising.”In Washington, a senior US official said Syria may have had help carrying out the alleged chemical attack, but stopped short of accusing Russia of complicity.© – AFP 2017Read: Syria airstrike: Donald Trump’s 180 degree shift on attacking the Assad regime Saturday 8 Apr 2017, 4:00 PM Short URL UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson cancels Russia trip after US bombs Syria “The United States will no longer wait for Assad to use chemical weapons without any consequences.” 93 Comments Share3 Tweet Email By AFP Apr 8th 2017, 4:00 PM Image: Nick Ansell/PA Wire 25,445 Views http://jrnl.ie/3330358 Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article

A new initiative is set to make Greece’s beaches – arguably the country’s most famous asset – more accessible for people with mobility problems. The initiative is part of the Tsipras government’s social policy program to promote equal rights to people with disability. According to the announcement, the government aims to build infrastructure and install all appropriate equipment to a significant number of beaches within 2018, so that they are ready by the beginning of the next tourist season to welcome anyone who is excluded from beaches at the moment – notably the disabled, the elderly, pregnant women and people recovering from injuries and illness. The program is aiming to improve the quality of life of people living with disability in Greece, but also to attract more tourists to the country, making it a preferred destination for people with disability. The project is an initiative emanating from Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ social policy office, which mobilised the economy and development ministry to draw up a plan to install infrastructure, giving independent wheelchair access to the sea and related facilities. The infrastructure will consist of non-permanent assembled mechanisms, as well as specially designed changing cabins, portable toilets, ramps, parking areas and areas providing shade and protection. The policy was announced by the Ministry of Economy and Development, which is responsible for implementing the plan, in accordance with the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (which was recently made a law of the state), but also with the EU ‘Europe 2020’ strategy for growth and employment, which emphasises sustainable and inclusive policies. On Monday, the ministry will invite offers, with a budget set at €5 million in total, with a maximum of €60,000 per facility. Among potential beneficiaries are municipalities on the coast, which can each bid for up to four, and the Public Properties Company. Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram
Marathon Mayor Ilias Psinakis, one of the most flamboyant politicians in local government, has just announced his candidacy for the European Elections due to take place in May.In recent days, a clock marked “Citizens, it’ll break out at any moment”, had been counting down to the announcement before today’s news of his bid to enter the European Parliament.A statement signed by Mr Psinakis announced his decision to stand as a candidate in the next European elections.“Europe is very special for Greece because the government (and every government of each EU member state) follows European legislation. Unavoidably and without exception. It is the ‘wallet’ and the opportunities that bring development and prosperity. Greece, over the last 20 years ‘lives’ on the money it receives from Europe,” stated the media release announcing his candidacy.READ MORE: Lucrative incentives for EU Parliamentarians“Citizens are not a party, nor a movement, nor a faction.

Update: If you want to buy this cartridge, please be advised that it might destroy your SNES! This is what the official listing from iam8bit says:“Use of this reproduction game cartridge (the “Product”) on the SNES gaming hardware may cause the SNES console to overheat or catch fire. The SNES hardware is deemed a vintage collectible, so please exercise extreme caution when using the Product and make sure there is fire extinguishment equipment nearby.”My advice? Buy this thing just to show off. Don’t tempt fate and set your console on fire.Original story: What’s that familiar smell? Is that… nostalgia? In a year that has seen the release of Sonic Mania, and will soon give us the SNES Classic Edition and even a new freakin’ Atari system, Capcom has announced a re-release of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. Instead of tossing their classic fighting game onto modern systems, Capcom, along with iam8bit, will release it on a fully playable SNES cartridge. Why? Because nostalgia, man! This $100 collector’s edition will be extremely limited, with only 5,500 cartridges set for production. 4,500 copies are the “Opaque Ryu Red” variant, while the “Translucent Glow-in-the-Dark Blanka Green” version will be limited to 1000 copies. Buyers won’t know which cartridge they’ll get since they are randomly distributed. Considering how the Blanka cartridge is the ultra-rare one, I’m sure eager collectors hope they get that version. In addition to the Street Fighter II cartridge, the package comes with a tri-fold box with foil, gold, and embossments. There will even be a “premium” instruction booklet and “retro pack-in surprises.” I have no idea what theses “surprises” might be, but I bet you anything the only thing premium about the instruction booklet is that it’s in color. Remember when all instruction manuals were in color? Anyway, the whole package is being designed by Jango Snow Art & Design and is being manufactured by Retrotainment Games.I’m sure that collectors are feeling mighty ambivalent about this one. While a re-release of Street Fighter II on the SNES does sound tempting, most hardcore collectors probably already own the game. Then there’s also the matter of the system this cartridge is for. I don’t know many people who still play with (or own) an old-ass SNES console. But I guess that, just like with vinyl collectors, you’re really purchasing this for displaying (and bragging) purposes. I don’t know if I’ll get one for myself, but I applaud the effort behind this re-release.It should be noted that iam8bit says this is the first of a “Legacy Cartridge Collection.” If that’s the case, let’s hope we see cartridges for NES, Genesis, N64, and more. We can’t let the SNES have all the fun, after all.Make sure to head on over to iam8bit and grab a copy before they’re all gone!Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. He writes the most unorganized crime story of distorted and chaotic destruction you’ve ever seen.Brett Parson continues his epic visualization of the bullets, discord, and chaos in his cheerful and great drawings and inks. They never fail to produce a grin on your face. Even at points where danger is near or happening, you get a sense of glee from the radiant and vivid colors that he uses. Parson doesn’t fail to take Martin’s hilarious script and give it detail and personality that you’d never imagine. His art brings out more of the characteristics of our anti-heroes. The small details with the character in the world give this comic the zany and psychedelic magnetism that only he can provide.via Titan ComicsParson also letters this comic and, hot damn, he does an exceptional job. I talked about the zany nature of his art, but that also comes out through his lettering. The sound effects, in particular, makes everything so eccentric and bizarre, but works perfectly in the topsy-turvy world we’re reading. Within Tank Girl, that’s what you want. The more strange and madcap things are, the more you gravitate to the uproar. The Wonderful World of Tank Girl #1: Tank Girl Strikes Again is just the start of these delightful one-shots. They expand the Mad Max-like wicked and wacky world or Tank Girl. The Wonderful World of Tank Girl #1: Tank Girl Strikes Again is available now at Comixology and your local comic shop.
Netflix Axes ‘The OA’ Sci-Fi Series After 2 Seasons‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ Becomes Mostly Harm… Stay on target Ijon Tichy: Space PilotStanislaw Lem is one of the greatest sci-fi writers of all time, an idiosyncratic philosopher and physician who explored complex subjects with humor and skill. His work is frustratingly hard to translate to other mediums, but Germany’s ZDF channel did a solid job in 2007 with Ijon Tichy: Space Pilot. The titular hero is an awkward weirdo flying through space in a “three-bedroom rocket” made from a French press, accompanied by a holographic woman. The duo get into all manner of shenanigans in this satirical series, which lasted two seasons. The first one was shot entirely in star Oliver Jahn’s apartment. English science fiction has made its way across the pond for decades, starting with Doctor Who through modern hits like Black Mirror. Without a language barrier in place, it’s easy for us Americans to enjoy British sci-fi. But guess what? Plenty of other countries have their own television industries, and they’re making compelling and unique science fiction of their own. Some of that has already made its way over here – Netflix shows Brazilian post-apocalypse series 3%, for example, as well as German horror show Dark. But we want more! With that in mind, we trawled through TV Guides from all over the world to get examples of eleven foreign shows that we really want to see, subbed or dubbed. My Love From The StarKorean television is famous for romance, and the sci-fi My Love From The Star is a satisfying weepie. Kim Soo-hyun plays an alien who landed on Earth in 1609 and gets stranded here for 400 years. During that span, he lives multiple lifetimes, taking on a new identity every decade because he doesn’t show any visual signs of aging. When he meets a young actress just a few months before his people show up to take him home, it tests his allegiance to his adopted planet in ways he never thought possible. The show was wildly popular not only in Korea, where it influenced fashion trends for years, but also neighboring China. BunkerUnsurprisingly, Russian science fiction still has the Cold War on the brain. Bunker, which premiered on their TNT network in 2006, is a dark comedy about a research team in an underground Siberian installation who have been cut off from the outside world for three years as they work on a mysterious project. When a new researcher shows up with a specialization in veterinary medicine despite there being no animals in the bunker, things start to get really weird. Full of dark humor, this series looks a little dated now but still packs a punch of culture shock.2091Latin America is a huge market, and they’re already starting to make inroads into the entertainment world. 2091 is the first premium TV sci-fi drama from South America, and it’s a doozy. Made in Colombia, the show jets us forward to a future where video game addiction has become a public health issue, leading a billionaire to fly the hardest of the hardcore to the moon of Callisto to compete for a prize that’s a lot bigger than bragging rights. The show has some flaws, but it’s a really cool look at how another culture tackles some hoary old tropes.Ha’Nephilim“Normal people get unusual abilities” is one of the hoariest sci-fi TV premises, but it’s always interesting to see how other cultures interpret it. As you might guess from the title of this Israeli series, there’s a bit of a religious tinge to this one. When a teenage boy moves with his father to a nuclear research facility in the south of the country, he stumbles on a conspiracy to hide an alien spaceship that contains a portal to another place, occupied by criminals with superpowers. When they deactivate the restraint field, hundreds of people rediscover their true superhuman skills and chaos ensues.El Ministerio del TiempoSecret government institutions are a staple of sci-fi series all over the world, and Spain is no exception. The hit El Ministerio del Tiempo follows the employees of an office tasked with correcting disturbances in the flow of time. Pulled from the last 300 years, our lead trio leaps through mostly Spanish history meeting notable figures and fixing problems. It’s not the most original of premises, but the local flavor makes it a fun watch and you might just learn something. The show’s sense of humor keeps things feeling light and brisk, and there’s some clever set design to look at. El BarcoIf you miss the glory days of thinking Lost was good, Spanish TV show El Barco might scratch that same itch. When an accident at the Large Hadron Collider sinks all of Earth’s continents below the sea, the crew of the Estrella Polar must search for survivors and try to find a way to survive in this wet new world. The crew of the ship is primarily students on a sailing scholarship along with a few adults – a chef, a doctor and a mysterious stowaway. The show is fast-paced and pulpy fun, and while the shipboard setting can feel claustrophobic it keeps things lively with fun characters and some seriously bizarre threats, including panicked flocks of birds with nowhere to land. ÉternelleStarring singer/actress Claire Keim, Éternelle was a big hit for French network M6 when it premiered in 2009. She plays an amnesiac woman who is discovered wandering nude in Paris and, upon examination, is host to an unknown bacteria that seems to have given her the ability to siphon memories from people she comes into physical contact with. The six-episode first series did exceptionally well and a sequel has been promised, but it’s been nearly a decade and nothing seems to have materialized. That’s a shame, because sci-fi TV isn’t a big thing in France and you’d think they’d want to follow up on one of their only homegrown hits. TrepaliumClass consciousness has always been a major part of science fiction, and this recent French miniseries tackles the subject boldly. In the uncertain future, a massive wall divides Paris into two segments – the city on one side and the Zone on the other, where 80% of the population lives. The demand for labor results in a lottery that brings Zone people over to the other side of the wall every year, but once there they learn that things aren’t quite as simple as they seem. It’s a bleak and relentless portrait of the world to come and very much worth watching. Alpha 0.7Germany has built a reputation as a hub for innovative technology, and their sci-fi reflects that. One of the most successful shows on the air in recent years was Alpha 0.7, which was presented as a “transmedia” experience that also included a radio program and Web content. Following the adventures of a group of activists attempting to dismantle the surveillance state implemented by the Protecta Society, it’s a clever and compelling bit of dystopia that seems increasingly prescient the more we learn about Facebook and other actors misusing our private data. It’s worth noting that Germany has laws allowing individuals to sue companies for data breaches, so maybe this show inspired some real-world good. Or maybe it’s just a good sci-fi TV program. CircleThis Korean sci-fi drama had a pretty unusual format hook. Each episode was divided into two stories following the same characters – the first half would take place in 2017 and the second twenty years later. Twin brothers Kim Woo-jin and Kim Bum-gyun are the protagonists of the 2017 storyline, following up their encounter with an alien spacecraft. The 2037 storyline sees Korea divided into a pair of nation-states – one sleek and hyper-advanced, the other polluted and hellish. Detective Kim Joon-hyuk lives in the latter but must gain admittance to the former to investigate the disappearance of the twins. It’s a clever and fascinating show with a cool premise and solid execution. Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.

Stay on target Staff of a fishing lodge in Alaska got the shock of their lives when they discovered that a young brown bear had walked into the kitchen searching for a meal.Unfortunately, the bold bear met a sad ending when officials decided it had to be put down because it showed no fear of humans. The staff at the Highliner Lodge in Pelican were prepping for a dinner service when the 400-pound bear walked in through the back of the restaurant, the lodge wrote in a Facebook post. Watch: Deputies Help Bear Family Rescue Cub Trapped in DumpsterCouple Uses Baseball Bat, Fists to Fight Off Bear That Entered Home Owner Steve Daniels thought it was a prank at first until he saw the bear “sniffing around” in the supplies. Daniels threw the first thing he could grab at the bear — a round of salami. Daniels then flung dinner plates toward the bear, hoping the noise would get it out of the door.Daniels told the Juneau Empire that “pandemonium” ensued when the lodge’s 30 guests learned a bear had crashed their dinner.Daniels shared photos on social media of the bear in the kitchen, among shelves of food. He reported the incident to authorities, who have been having issues with the same bear. The bear had actually been spotted on residents’ properties in the past week, and had become very bold and unafraid of humans.Pelican Public Safety Officer Robert Adams told the Juneau Empire that efforts to deter the bear had not been successful even with the use of non-lethal rounds and horns.“The bear continued to hang around behind the lodge in the thick brush. It came back onto the porch twice after the dinner service and later was trampling through thick brush 10 feet from the door of one of our staff members who was afraid to enter her room,” the lodge said in its Facebook post. “The bear continued to move through he brush towards the armed village public safety officer, Steve, Highliner staff and several guests.”Judging this to be a serious threat to the community, Adams decided to put the bear down.Alaska Wildlife Troopers removed the carcass, which turned out to be female, Juneau Empire reported.“This was not the outcome that anyone had hoped for… Bears that exhibit such behavior are extremely dangerous to humans,” the lodge said. “While we would much prefer that this story could have ended with the comical intrusion of a bear on our dinner service, scaring it back into the hills forever by use of dinner plates and salami, we are relieved that everyone is safe and understand that the decision was unavoidable.”Last month, a black bear in Oregon was put down by wildlife officials after it became too used to humans illegally feeding it and taking selfies with it.More on Geek.com:Watch: Photographer Captures ‘Best Bear Fight Ever’ in Wild VideoBlack Bear Put Down After People Illegally Take Selfies, Feed Him in OregonSleepy Black Bear Sneaks Into Montana Home to Take a Nap

PORTLAND — A jury delivered an extraordinary blow to the government in a long-running battle over the use of public lands when it acquitted all seven defendants involved in the armed occupation of a national wildlife refuge in rural southeastern Oregon.Tumult erupted in the courtroom Thursday after the verdicts were read when an attorney for group leader Ammon Bundy demanded his client be immediately released and repeatedly yelled at the judge. U.S. marshals tackled attorney Marcus Mumford to the ground, used a stun gun on him several times and arrested him.U.S. District Judge Anna Brown said she could not release Bundy because he still faces charges in Nevada stemming from an armed standoff at his father Cliven Bundy’s ranch two years ago.The Portland jury acquitted Bundy, his brother Ryan Bundy and five others of conspiring to impede federal workers from their jobs at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, 300 miles southeast of Portland. The jury could not reach a verdict on a single count of theft for Ryan Bundy.Even attorneys for the defendants were surprised by the acquittals.“It’s stunning. It’s a stunning victory for the defense,” said Robert Salisbury, attorney for defendant Jeff Banta. “I’m speechless.”The U.S Attorney in Oregon, Billy J. Williams, issued a statement defending the decision to bring charges against the seven defendants: “We strongly believe that this case needed to be brought before a Court, publicly tried, and decided by a jury.”
A second candidate has announced his bid to become the next Port of Vancouver District 1 commissioner.Kris Greene announced his intentions to run on Friday. If elected, he would replace Commissioner Brian Wolfe, who doesn’t plan to run for re-election.“I bring a lot of community and business background. I can help the port attain some really great things,” Greene said. Adding that one of his goals is to attract businesses that will support the community, especially those that will offer mentoring programs in the schools.Greene’s announcement marks his first foray into politics. He’s been a local insurance agent for about 20 years and lived in Vancouver for about as long. He currently serves on the East Vancouver Business Association board as the director of government affairs. He’s been an active member of several other community groups including the Evergreen School District Foundation.Greene spoke highly of the port’s condition and that he wants to build on the “successful accomplishments of current and former commissioners.”Aside from the need to bring in more businesses, Greene said he saw little about the port that needed to be improved.Possibly the biggest difference between Greene and his opponent Don Orange, the only other candidate to announce so far, is the Vancouver Energy oil terminal. If it’s built, the terminal will be capable of transferring 360,000 barrels of oil per day from an average of four 120-car trains per day traveling through the Columbia River Gorge into marine vessels destined for West Coast refineries. Patrick Timm is a local weather specialist. His column appears Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Reach him at http://patricktimm.com. The almost full moonrise Sunday evening was nothing less than spectacular. And I know the actual full moonrise Monday evening was probably also outstanding. It is so nice to have some nice clear skies and an autumn feel to the air. Could you feel it Monday?I certainly could feel fall in the air with the brisk dry northerly wind. With the dry and cool air mass many locations here in Clark County dipped into the 30s, with at least a few readings at the frost point. East of the Cascades in Washington and Oregon, overnight lows plummeted into the low to mid-20s. It is that time of the year, I guess. We will see highs at 80 degrees or higher today through Friday as a large area of warm high pressure holds strong. Some computer models show increasing clouds and a chance of rain or showers this weekend but I think as the week wears on that may change and we will continue to have dry weather on Saturday and Sunday. Stay tuned.Meanwhile, Monday around the Evergreen State, afternoon temperatures were in the low to mid-60s north of Chehalis and in the low 70s south to Vancouver. The overnight lows will continue to be on the cool side, so a jacket is appropriate for the early morning school bus. Good luck trying to get the kids to wear an outer garment.Vancouver dipped to 43 degrees Monday for the low, with the average low now at 49 degrees. The afternoon high temperature as of 5 p.m. was 72 degrees, one degree below average for the date.
Cristiano Ronaldo is expecting a difficult time against Spain in Portugal’s opening game in the World Cup, but he is determined to avoid defeat in what he feels could potentially spoil their campaignThe defending European champions are being considered only the eighth favourites to claim glory at Russia this summer and will begin their campaign in a tricky encounter against the 2010 winners Spain.Ronaldo, who has enjoyed a trophy-laden career at club level, knows all about winning at the highest level and he warned Portugal that defeat on the first day could very well set them back.“A defeat on the first day puts you in a bad way for the rest of the tournament so it’s important to start well,” said the captain, according to Goal.Fiorentina owner: “Ribery played better than Ronaldo!” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso was left gushing over Franck Ribery’s performance against Juventus, which he rates above that of even Cristiano Ronaldo’s.“But I believe both Spain and Portugal will reach the next round.”But the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is refusing to discount his team’s chances and made reference to their Euro 2016 triumph.Like now, the Selecao were considered outsiders for glory in France but they still managed to fight their way through to the final and lift the trophy.“To win the World Cup would be a dream for Portugal but to do it we have to play the same way we did in Euro 2016, as a team and all together,” added Ronaldo.
Mundial host Russia has beaten all the nations it has played against but progress for them to the World Cup last-16 is the victory the country deserves, the country’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Thursday via FourFourTwo.Russia won their opening two matches at the tournament, humiliating Saudi Arabia with five goals and thrashing Egypt 3-1, to secure them a slot in the latter stages of the competition for the first time since the break-up of the Soviet Union.Scotland needs a hero: Billy Dodds Manuel R. Medina – September 10, 2019 According to former striker, Billy Dodds his country needs a hero to inspire future generations as the team’s hope to qualify to the EURO 2020 is small.“Our win, of course, is pleasing. This is huge. It is a great event for the country, because we deserve victories as we have done a lot for this. Because the country has built a large number of stadiums in such a short period of time. These are beautiful, stunning buildings,” Shoigu told journalists. He added that football was a great game, which unites those who love sports and their country and those “who value normal relations between other countries, states and peoples.”
Former Arsenal football club goalkeeper David Seaman insists the club’s new signing Bernd Leno has to be patient as Petr Cech continues to remain the first choice option. The former Bayer Leverkusen shot-stopper joined the Gunners this summer for a fee believed to be around £22.5million but is yet to feature in a competitive game for the club so far.Leno is a German international but Seaman – who played more than 400 times for Arsenal in a glittering 13 years at the club – said: ‘Just because he cost a lot of money does not mean he goes straight into the team.“He has to be patient. Petr Cech has done nothing wrong in goal.” Seaman said, according to Daily Mail.“Ok, so he is adjusting to playing with the ball from the box. But he has been able to contribute to the team and has done nothing to cause him to be left out.”Tony Cascarino names Bernd Leno as Arsenal’s weak spot Andrew Smyth – August 3, 2019 Tony Cascarino suggested that Arsenal might’ve been better off signing a new goalkeeper after identifying Bernd Leno as their weak spot.Seaman believes a spell in a more observational role will benefit Leno as he watches at first hand the demands of the Premier League.“This could be a learning curve for him. You have to be patient in football… I know. I had to be in the past when I was playing. Leno has to bide his time.”With the introduction of Cup games coming up in both the Carabao Cup and UEFA Europa League, Leno will be confident of making his Arsenal bow soon enough.
Newcastle’s boss Rafa Benitez has written off claims they are missing the services of Aleksandr Mitrovic who moved to Fulham in the summer transfer window. The sale of Mitrovic for £22.5m in the summer angered some sections of the fans but Benitez is adamant, insisting he would not have scored as many goals if he had remained at Newcastle.Asked if he had any regrets about effectively forcing Mitrovic out of the club, Benitez replied: “He is doing well, he did well for Serbia, but Rondon was doing well for Venezuela.Report: Courtois’s agent arrested in money laundering case George Patchias – September 11, 2019 Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois agent has been arrested as part of a money-laundering investigation. The ugly word corruption is again staining the world of football. In…“Each player has his own environment and they can do well in one team and maybe not as well in the other one.“We have to make a decision in terms of what we needed and we knew what we needed, that’s it, now we have to move forward.“It doesn’t change my decision. I have to carry on with Ayoze Perez, Joselu, Yoshinori Mutuo, and Rondon, that’s it.”

The recent talk has been bad for Roma and Nicolo.Zaniolo’s agent admits Spurs interest Manuel R. Medina – September 9, 2019 According to his agent, Nicolo Zaniolo was wanted by Tottenham Hotspur during the summer, but he explained why he renewed with Roma instead.“We all have to row on the same boat if he is to develop properly. We mustn’t upset the fans and club: Roma are going for third place, there’s the derby and then the match against Porto: for him, the priority is the team and he only wants to think about the pitch.“Yesterday he spent the day at home with his mother. He wants to stay focused on Roma’s upcoming games in Serie A and Champions League.“The first leg against Porto was a good test, but of course it’s not enough. We won’t hide his quality as it’s undeniable, but obviously, we mustn’t stop now because he hasn’t done anything yet.Zaniolo’s father: ‘He has to keep both feet on the ground’ | English News https://t.co/UCJeph3LRI pic.twitter.com/Qs78oCmIh3— SPORTS USA (@sportsusa_net) February 23, 2019“[His talent] will have to be confirmed in the final part of the season and then the next few years.“If he stops at his two goals against Porto then we’re at the beginning of the end. The derby? I’m pumped for it.“The derby is always a special game and there’s a fantastic atmosphere for it in the city. Nicolo is fired up, but I hope he’s more relaxed than I am.”
