SecretaryGeneral convenes information session on HIV in UN workplace

30 November 2007On the eve of World AIDS Day, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today convened an orientation session on HIV in the United Nations workplace as part of his efforts to ensure that the world body becomes a model in responding to the virus. Facilitated by one of the UN’s coordinators on HIV in the workplace, the session was intended for all Under-Secretaries-General and Assistant Secretaries-General based at Headquarters, as well as the executive heads of New York-based UN agencies. “The Secretary-General hopes the session will provide him and his senior leaders with important lessons and messages, while helping them set an example as managers and colleagues,” Mr. Ban’s spokesperson, Michele Montas, told reporters. While sessions on HIV in the workplace have been offered to the Organization’s staff on a voluntary basis in recent years, they are now becoming mandatory for all employees working at Headquarters and in the field. These sessions convey information on transmission, prevention, stigma and discrimination, care and treatment, as well as the UN’s policies, initiatives and services. Also today, Mr. Ban will address a World AIDS Day observance at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Manhattan. Ms. Montas said the Secretary-General would emphasize the need for Government and individual leadership to assure universal access to prevention, treatment, care and support, noting that “We all need to take responsibility for the response.” read more

Gunmen launch yet another attack on aid workers in Darfur UN reports

The non-governmental organization (NGO) convoy of three vehicles with six local staff was stopped this morning in South Darfur on its way from Nyala, the provincial capital, to Kalma internally displaced persons (IDP) camp, the joint UN-African Union mission in Darfur (UNAMID) said in a statement. The gunmen forced it to drive down to a nearby gully.“Although the workers complied without resistance to demands for money, the attackers assaulted them up before leaving the scene,” it added “Three out of the six workers were reportedly severely beaten and taken to the local hospital, where their condition is listed as stable and non life-threatening.” Initial reports suggest that the assailants were informed of the workers’ movements and that they were transporting cash intended for the payment of salaries for the Kalma camp staff.“If proven right, these suspicions would point to an act of banditry,” UNAMID added.Just yesterday, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes told the Security Council that 261 vehicles had been hijacked and 172 compounds broken into so far this year. Rebel movements, or those linked to them, appear primarily responsible for the majority of “these terrifying incidents” in rural areas, but many also occur in main towns in Government control, he said.“I call on both the Government security forces and rebel leaders to put a stop to this banditry once and for all,” he added. “It seriously damages the quality of assistance – just as one example, World Food Programme (WFP) rations are still only at 70 per cent because of attacks on their convoys – and it damages the credibility of their promises to ensure our safety.”UNAMID, slated to reach 26,000 personnel but now only 10,500-strong, is being deployed throughout Darfur in an effort to bring peace to a region where more than five years of fighting between Government forces, allied Janjaweed militia and rebel groups have killed an estimated 300,000 people and driven another 2.7 million from their homes. 4 December 2008Two gunmen equipped with AK-47 assault rifles and a hand grenade stopped a humanitarian convoy in Sudan’s war-ravaged Darfur region today, beat up the aid workers and stole money in the latest of a long series of such assaults that are impeding relief operations, the United Nations reported. read more

TSX up loonie down and New York markets mixed after Fed keeps

by Peter Henderson, The Canadian Press Posted Sep 17, 2015 6:04 am MDT Last Updated Sep 17, 2015 at 3:40 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email TSX up, loonie down and New York markets mixed after Fed keeps overnight interest rate steady TORONTO – The TSX closed higher on Thursday while American markets retreated after the U.S. Federal Reserve decided to stand pat on interest rates, citing a weak global economy, persistently low inflation and unstable financial markets. In Toronto, the S&P/TSX index closed up 23.38 points at 13,787.16 after soaring just over 300 points on Wednesday, by far its biggest gain since late last month amid a period of extreme volatility. The loonie rose more than half a cent after the announcement but fell back to end the day down 0.01 of a US cent at 75.91 cents US.In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 65.21 points to close at 16,674.74, the broader S&P 500 dropped 5.11 points to 1,990.20 and the Nasdaq rose 4.71 points to 4,893.95.On commodity markets, the October contract for benchmark oil slid 25 cents to US$46.90 a barrel and October natural gas fell 0.8 of a cent to US$2.652 per thousand cubic feet. December gold gave back $2 to US$1,117.00 an ounce, while December copper was unchanged at US$2.45 a pound. On Thursday afternoon, the U.S. central bank said it would keep its benchmark overnight interest rate at between zero and 0.25 per cent. The rate, a widely watched number that affects nearly every part of the American economy through its effect on bank lending rates, has gone unchanged since 2008 when the world was in the throes of the global financial crisis and credit markets were seizing up.The Fed’s rate decision was approved on a 9-1 vote. The sole dissenter was Jeffrey Lacker, president of the Fed’s Atlanta regional bank, who backed a 25-basis-point increase. However, the Fed, in language it has used before, said rates would only rise when it sees further improvement in the labour market and is “reasonably confident” that inflation will move back to the Fed’s optimal inflation target of two per cent. The U.S. central bank said inflation was up just 1.2 per cent in its latest reading. It foresees inflation accelerating to a 1.7 per cent increase next year, but still below the target rate.Meanwhile, the majority of Fed policy-makers said they still expected a rate hike would occur before the end of the year, predicting a single, quarter-point increase.Patrick O’Toole, vice-president at CIBC Asset Management, said the documents released by the Fed along with its decision show the central bank believes that America is growing at a fairly healthy rate in 2016.“If you’re running an economy at a growth rate that’s higher than what some would say is trend, it’s curious that they think they can justify holding rates at an emergency setting of zero,” he said.Follow @Henderburn on Twitter. read more

Commentary Would US sports fans support promotion relegation system

When a professional sports team in America has a bad season, as the old saying goes, there’s always next season – but not in European soccer. End-of-season discussions around some European professional soccer leagues are about survival. Mainly, which teams are going to survive to play another year in a given country’s top league. The English Premier League, the world’s most prominent soccer league, is among those leagues where suspense almost always carries into the final minutes of the season. The EPL has a stipulation in place that relegates or downgrades its bottom three teams in any one season to the Football Association’s Championship division. In return, the top three teams of the Championship are promoted to the Premier League. Conceptually, it would be like the Columbus Clippers having the best record in Triple-A baseball and then moving up to play Major League Baseball the following season. And the same goes for the Championship, as well as the two divisions below it – the FA’s League One and League Two. The top and bottom three teams from each of England’s four divisions shuffle back and forth season after season. With its season concluding on Sunday, this year’s EPL relegated teams are Wolverhampton F.C., Blackburn F.C. and Bolton F.C. No club is safe from the relegation rule as Blackburn (1995 EPL Champions) becomes the first former Premier League champion to be relegated. How harsh is that? 17 years removed from a championship and you’re deemed not good enough to compete in the league. Harsh or not, the rule is ingenious on some levels. It creates a level playing field and makes every game in a season matter. There certainly isn’t any talk of “tanking” game in the Premier League for any reason. So, what if American sports leagues adopted its European counterparts relegation and promotion rules? Would it be a good thing? Is it even possible? Would the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats have lost 23 games in a row to end the season? Whether it would be good for leagues like the NFL, MLB, NBA and the NHL to adopt the relegation-promotion rule is purely subjective. It would be good in the sense teams likely wouldn’t tank, and every regular-season game matters, but at what cost? Would the playoffs have to be eliminated? The EPL crowns its champion based solely on regular season performance. If there were no Super Bowl or World Series, would that be a good thing? The question of whether it’s even possible to have a relegation-promotion rule in American professional sports is interesting. As it stands now, only two of the top four leagues have the type of minor-league system in place to piggyback off the system used English soccer. The NHL has the American Hockey League (AHL) below it as an incremental level and MLB has Triple-A baseball with the International League and Pacific Coast League. Even then, those leagues would need adjustment. The NHL or MLB teams couldn’t have ties to the AHL or Triple-A teams as they do now using the lower level teams as a means of producing players within a farm system. The Premier League’s relegation and promotion rule is something American sports fans envy, and although some fans wish it would be adopted tomorrow by America’s sports leagues, it’s not a simple as it may seem. read more

IndiGos poor customer care record forces parliamentary panel to flag airline

first_imgThe alleged failure of IndiGo to respond satisfactorily to customer complaints is behind a parliamentary panel’s remarks that it is the ‘worst performing’ airline for customer services.Derek O’Brien, the Trinamool Congress MP who heads the panel, reserved the sharpest criticism for the low-budget carrier in a report that he tabled in the Rajya Sabha, according to a media report. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, Road, Shipping and Aviation said in the report that the airline was noted for poor customer services, having rude staff and higher charges during the festive season, among other issues.IndiGo, owned by InterGlobe Enterprises, however, denied it neglected customer complaints. The airline said in a statement that it evaluated complaints and feedback by the customers rigorously and the staff were given regular training to handle situations and make possible hassle-free customer experience.O’Brien said the panel was not generally happy with the way some private carriers are operating, but it was discourteous the way IndiGo was operating. He said Air India had the best luggage policy.”Our committee is very clear that the worst performing airline for consumers is IndiGo. All 30 members agreed on this. IndiGo has not respondeddespite many complaints. The way they behave with consumers and charge for just one kg or two kg overweight of air baggage…,” O’Brien said, according to a media report. He said some carriers charged eight to 10 times the normal fares during the festive season.”The airline is very rigid, IndiGo even charges for one-two kg overweight, this has not been taken very well and the committee is looking into the matter seriously,” O’Brien said. While taking note of higher fare charges, the panel suggested that the charges by the airlines should not exceed 50 per cent of the base fare and tax and airlines should refund the fuel surcharge to customers. The national carrier Air India has the best policy for luggage and other private carriers should raise the baggage limit, O’Brien said.last_img read more

VIDEO Joe Thomas did first word association for all 21 Browns QBs

first_img Advertisement Joe Thomas just retired and is almost certainly headed to Canton after being consistently excellent for 10 years on the worst team in the NFL. While most NFL o-lineman will only play with a handful of quarterbacks, Thomas blocked for 21 inept signal callers thanks to the Browns inability to ever land a franchise QB. IIncredibly, Big Joe remembers all of the washouts, and recently sat down with The Checkdown to do a first word association exercise for every one of them, from Charlie Frye and Seneca Wallace, to johnny Football.Thomas’ memory is damn impressive, but damn that list is depressing when you say all the quarterbacks out loud.Joe Thomas blocked for 21 different @Browns QBs.We asked him the first thing that comes to mind for each one. 😂 @joethomas73 pic.twitter.com/f9IZymkR61— The Checkdown (@thecheckdown) July 25, 2018last_img read more

iPhone 11 Is All About That Square Camera Bump

first_img This story originally appeared on PCMag July 17, 2019 Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. Apple hasn’t been able to keep new iPhone designs from leaking ahead of a launch for several generations now, with the iPhone events becoming simply confirmations of what we already knew. This year, it looks like Apple will be confirming the iPhone 11 is more of the same, but with the addition of an unusual square camera bump on the back of the phone. We’ve heard rumors of a camera upgrade on the iPhone for a while now, with leaked case molds back in May suggesting a square camera bump. Now, as 9To5Mac reports, YouTuber MKBHD managed to get his hands on dummy models of all three iPhone 11 handsets and his video shows us how bad, or good depending on your tastes, the square camera bump looks. What you’re seeing is the purported iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max and iPhone 11R, with both the 11 and 11 Max sporting three rear camera lenses including a new ultra-wide angle lens. The iPhone 11R is the budget iPhone, sacrificing one lens to hit a lower price point, but retaining the same size camera bump with the flash in a different location.Regardless of what you think about the new camera setup on the rear of the phone, if these dummy models are the final design, then it’s more of the same from Apple. The only noticeable visual difference is the camera bump. The iPhone 11 retains the same design, same layout, same notch, same lack of USB-C, and most likely the same pricing. What we should expect under the hood is a faster processor, faster sensors inside the notch, and the iPhone becoming an even more impressive digital camera replacement. If photos aren’t your focus and you own an iPhone XS or XS Max$1,064.50 at Amazon, then the choice to upgrade may come down solely to the design. As the design is mostly the same and the new square camera bump will divide opinion, many iPhone owners could opt to stick with their iPhone XS and wait for the iPhone 12. That wouldn’t be great news for Apple who already suffered a dip in iPhone sales last year suggesting we have reached peak iPhone. Apple also deciding to not share sales figures anymore was very telling. Are you an iPhone owner considering an upgrade to the iPhone 11 later this year? What do you think of the square camera bump? Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald s

first_imgArizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald seemed incredulous that the question was even asked.“How can you be over-confident after scoring three points in a game,” he said when asked if the Bills’ struggling defense could present a different kind of challenge for the Cardinals offense. “How can you? That’s not the attitude we have right now. “We have the we have to prove ourselves attitude and we do. After putting a bad performance like that on national TV we have a lot that we need to improve on, and we need to go out there and show that we’re capable of executing at that level.” Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Comments   Share   Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires “We have to do a better job this week of paying attention to the details and preventing those long passes,” he said. The Bills are averaging 23.6 points per game, which places them 15th in the NFL but nearly five whole points ahead of the Cardinals. And while Fitzpatrick gets a lot of the attention, their two-headed monster at running back of Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller has given Buffalo the fifth-best rushing offense in the league. In other words, the Bills can move the ball in a variety of different ways.“They give you a number of different looks,” Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “It’s kind of a different offense from what you see, the conventional type.” The “bad performance” Fitzgerald was speaking of was Arizona’s 17-3 loss to the Rams last Thursday, a game where the offense tallied just 282 total yards. It led to Arizona’s first defeat of the season, and while it counts as just one loss, it has led many to wonder if Arizona’s offense will ultimately be its undoing.Which is why, really, the idea that the Cardinals could be over-confident against anyone — even the NFL’s 31st (out of 32) ranked defense — seems somewhat preposterous. But Arizona’s defense is a different story. They should be feeling pretty good about this game, right? After all, the Bills were just held to three points by the San Francisco 49ers, and come into their game against the Cardinals having turned the ball over 13 times in five games, which is the third-worst total in the NFL. Not exactly.“They’re very explosive,” Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson said of the Bills. “They spread the field out, create space, and just have their athletes in space trying to make plays.”Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson agreed with the idea that the Bills are explosive, pointing the fact that while Buffalo quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick may be third in the NFL in interceptions thrown (8), he’s also third in touchdown passes (12). Many have come on big plays, which is something the second-year pro said the Cardinals need to do a better job of defending.
