Mercedes Benz warn of prices going back to pre-GST level

first_imgChennai, Aug 29 (PTI): German luxury car maker Mercedes Benz today said that levy of cess might see prices of its vehicles go back to what was prevalent before implementation of Goods and Services Tax. Mercedes Benz India, Managing Director, Roland Folger, said that the situation may go back to “square one” due to levy of cess for large cars and Sports Utility vehicles if government does not intervene. He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the companys first AMG Performance Centre here, the seventh in the country. To a query, he said that after GST was implemented, prices (of Mercedes Benz cars) went down. “Then we had cess.It is still an ordinance. It may be back to square one (if cess is levied). The price may go what was (prevailing) before GST”, he said. Under the GST regime, large cars with engine capacity of greater than 1,500 cc and SUVs with length of more than four metres and engine greater than 1,500 cc attracts cess of 15 per cent in addition to the top tax rate of 28 per cent. The overall tax incidence on locally-assembled luxury cars had come down from around 55 per cent earlier to 43 per cent in the GST regime. Last month, Folger had sought lower taxes on luxury cars in India, saying the move would help in job creation as well as increase tax collection from the segment. “We have seen in India that if on the one hand something is given, then on the other hand something is taken back”, Folger had said. Referring to the companys AMG Performance Centre, he said “We are proud to inaugurate our first AMG Performance in your city today. 2017 is a year of celebration for us. Mercedes Benz has completed 50 years.. We believe the AMG Performance cars will increase volumes”. In the January-June period, the company sold 7,171 units, a growth of 8.7 per cent over the 6,597 units it sold during the same period last year. Mercedes Benz had reported its best ever quarterly sales at 3,521 units in April-June 2017 period, up from 2,975 units during same period of last year. The company had sold 13,231 units in 2016. Amitabh Bachchan on watching Paa with PM Narendra Modi: An unusual experience

first_imgOn Wednesday morning, Akshay Kumar indulged in a one-of-its-kind conversation with the Prime Minister of India. It’s not every day that a Bollywood actor gets to have a “candid” chat with PM Narendra Modi, but Akshay Kumar got that rare opportunity. From PM Modi’s social media presence to his favourite Bollywood film, the two discussed a variety of subjects in their “completely non-political” interaction. Even Amitabh Bachchan couldn’t help but laud Akshay Kumar for the interview with PM Narendra Modi.During the interaction with Khiladi Kumar, PM Modi was asked about his favourite Bollywood films. To which, he replied, “I used to watch movies at a cinema hall in my village during childhood. I remember watching a movie [Paa] with Amitabh Bachchan when I was Gujarat CM. I also watched A Wednesday with Anupam Ji…it is based on the issue of terrorism.”Soon, Big B took to Twitter to recall the experience of watching Paa with PM Modi. The 76-year-old actor called it an unusual experience. He also praised Akshay Kumar for conducting the interview with so much dignity and respect.Bachchan wrote, “… an unusual and first experience .. the PM being interviewed by a Film fraternity star, Akshay Kumar .. dignity, respect, regard. Measuring child progress

first_imgA society’s future is inextricably intertwined with its children. How they survive, grow, and thrive determine its developmental prospects since the world of tomorrow will inherit the children of today. So, investing in our children’s future makes for a compelling argument besides it being a moral imperative. A region that provides its children with the opportunities to grow and learn, protect their rights and presents to them a healthy living environment will not only help them to create a better life for themselves but also contribute to society’s growth and development over the long run. Also Read – A special kind of bondOn this front, India has a particularly high demographic advantage over its peers with over 40 per cent of its population below 18 years of age as per the last census. Even though this trend would now be declining, India still maintains a fertility rate of 2.3. By comparison, China has a fertility rate of 1.63. Thus, the population of children in India will remain substantially high for the time being giving India an opportunity to ensure better child progress that would reap future demographic dividends. Also Read – Insider threat managementTo be fair, India has undoubtedly made significant progress towards ensuring child progress in recent times. Being among the fastest-growing economies in the world has ensured that the country has adequate resources to make significant progress across different facets of child progress. In basic healthcare, for instance, child stunting declined from 48 per cent from in 2006 to 38 per cent in 2016 and anaemic children declined by 11 percentage points during the same period. The under-five deaths have fallen below 1 million for the first time ever. If one looks at the education status of the country, considerable progress has been made in universalising primary education, improving enrolment and completion rates, and addressing gender disparity. One of the other important aspects of child development relates to personal choices. The fulfilment of these rights is compromised through early marriages and child labour among other things. India has been successful in significantly reducing early marriages that has resulted in a global drop in the number of child brides. These improvements have been made possible with the children-centric policies and initiatives taken up the Indian government. However, comparative statistics reveal that significant deficits in child development still remain. For instance, despite the overall literacy rate of India being 95 per cent, around 64 lakh students are out of school during their primary schooling years which is higher than every other country except Nigeria. On the health front, India still bears 23.8 per cent of the global burden of malnourishment and is home to 30 per cent of the world’s stunted children under the age of five. The 2018 Global Nutrition Report revealed that India is not on track to achieve any of the WHO’s nine nutrition goals. Over the years India has suffered heavy economic losses due to these issues. For instance, it loses over $12 billion in GDP to vitamin and mineral deficiencies every year. There is an urgent need for India to act upon these issues as the extent of gains to the country will be significantly far-reaching. Apart from the productivity gains of a well-developed future workforce, there are other indirect benefits of child progress. First, when children get adequate nourishment and proper education, they are less likely to depend upon public welfare later in life. Second, with higher employability and employment comes a reduction in crime, which is not only a societal benefit in itself but also saves the state crucial resources that would have been spent in crime prevention. Finally, with more people entering the workforce and paying taxes, the rise in government revenue will accrue almost as future dividend for resources invested today into child progress. Thus, it makes immense economic sense for a nation to invest in its children and orient its policies towards their development. It is also important to make early interventions in child progress as adequate health and education at a young age makes significant impact on their cognitive abilities, thus, determining their future productivity. It will not only have a profound impact on the learning capabilities and lifetime opportunities for children but will also create the human capital that the country needs to boost development in the coming decades. To undertake such interventions, however, a data-driven approach is necessary as India envelops vast spatial disparities and a one-size-fits-all approach can hardly prove effective. Across the vast expanse of the country, it is hardly surprising to find inter and intrastate variations in economic and social conditions. Thus, policy needs to be attuned to local conditions, which needs to be guided by data on a measure of child progress at all regional levels. Time we develop a child progress index and create a measurement tool that propels us to achieve better outcomes. (Amit Kapoor is chair, Institute for Competitiveness, India. Eastern refineries could save millions by buying more Canadian oil CERI report

first_imgCALGARY – Refineries in central and Atlantic Canada could save money on oil costs and produce fewer global greenhouse gas emissions if they bought more Canadian crude oil, according to a study by the Canadian Energy Research Institute released Wednesday. The study finds that substituting Canadian oil wherever possible using space on existing pipelines, railcars and ocean tankers would result in a 47 per cent reduction in foreign oil imports into Eastern Canada, saving the refineries $210 million per year and the equivalent of more than two million tonnes of carbon dioxide, or about 5.7 per cent.It adds that expanding the transportation system through a new pipeline equal to TransCanada Corp.’s cancelled Energy East would allow the eight refineries in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador to replace 57 per cent of imported oil at a savings of $317 million per year, while still cutting GHGs by two million tonnes.“I think there’s an opportunity for the energy sector to do more work together — east to west — to benefit Canada as a whole,” said CERI CEO Allan Fogwill following a presentation in Calgary.“There’s a social benefit in keeping it in the family and an economic benefit for eastern refineries (along with) an environmental benefit internationally.”He said the report, based on 2016 numbers gathered mainly without the refiners’ co-operation, doesn’t answer the question of why they buy from foreign suppliers when it would make sense to buy from within Canada. But he said he hopes its conclusions lead to a discussion about where the refineries source their oil.Peter Boag, CEO of the Canadian Fuels Association, which represents refiners, said operators weigh many factors to maximize the economic efficiency of their refineries, including looking at the composition of different types of crude oil.“Crude cost, the configuration and complexity of the refinery, and anticipated product demand are all factors that influence crude oil choice,” he said.He added that providing eastern Canadian refineries with better pipeline access to western Canadian crude would provide further flexibility in crude selection. The CERI study notes that the eastern refineries process just over one million barrels per day, of which 56 per cent comes from foreign countries led by the United States at 260,000 barrels of oil per day.About 39 per cent comes from Western Canada and five per cent is from eastern Canadian sources such as the offshore oilfields of Newfoundland and Labrador.Follow @HealingSlowly on Twitter.Companies in this story: (TSX:TRP)last_img read more

SC seeks EC response on Congress MPs plea alleging MCC violations by

first_imgNew Delhi: The Supreme Court Tuesday sought response of the Election Commission on a plea by a Congress MP alleging Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violations by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah on their alleged hate speeches and using armed forces for “political propaganda”. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said the poll panel was free to pass orders on complaint of Sushmita Dev, Congress Lok Sabha MP from Silchar in Assam and President of ‘All India Mahila Congress’. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss account details under automatic exchange framework The bench, also comprising Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, fixed Dev’s plea for hearing on Thursday. Dev has alleged that “inaction” by EC on complaints against top BJP leaders was “a sign of invidious discrimination” as also “arbitrary, capricious and impermissible” as it was destructive of the integrity of electoral process. The plea listed out several alleged instances of MCC violations by Modi and Shah in their meetings and referred to as the first violation the speech of Modi at a rally at Wardha, Maharashtra, on April 1 where he had allegedly raised the issue of ‘bhagva aatankwad’ (saffron terror).last_img read more

Doubles team of UNICEF and professional tennis to raise funds for global

“The UNICEF-ATP partnership will enable us to reach a whole new audience with critical information about children,” UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy said of the project, which will focus on fundraising for immunization among its first acts.”We are excited about working with ATP’s staff, players and fans to raise money for children and demonstrate how sports can make a significant difference in children’s lives,” she added. The joint announcement is set for tonight’s ATP All-Star Rally for Relief, an exhibition event benefiting UNICEF at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, California, featuring an unprecedented gathering of elite players including Swiss superstar Roger Federer, who worked with the ATP Foundation to organize the historic exhibition event.Participants include Andre Agassi, Carlos Moya, Andy Roddick, Marat Safin, Tim Henman, Guillermo Coria, Lleyton Hewitt, David Nalbandian and Paradorn Srichaphan. The partnership, to be called ACE (Assisting Children Everywhere), will focus on fundraising and advocacy. In targeting global child immunization programmes, UNICEF noted that while vaccines protect nearly three-quarters of the world’s children against major childhood illnesses, more than 2 million children die annually from diseases that could be prevented by inexpensive vaccines. For just $17, a child can be fully immunized against the top six childhood killer diseases – pertussis, childhood tuberculosis, tetanus, polio, measles and diphtheria.”We are delighted to work with UNICEF to use the power of tennis to help create a better world,” ATP Chief Executive Officer Mark Miles said. “We hope to raise considerable funds to support UNICEF’s work on behalf of children and to show the world that tennis is more than just a game. Sport can be a powerful force of change for children and families everywhere.” read more

NHS rules on single sex wards lead to discrimination against men with

Men with eating disorders are suffering discrimination because of NHS same sex ward rules, research suggests.A study of 26 UK hospitals treating the condition found four had stopped admitting male patients entirely, in a bid to comply with Department of Health guidelines. The rules, drawn up in 2010, say male and female patients should not be housed on the same wards, in a bid to protect patient dignity. But the new study suggests that men suffering from eating disorders are getting worse access to care, because hospitals are prioritising single sex wards for female patients.–– ADVERTISEMENT ––Men make up an estimated 25 per cent of the 1.25 millon people with an eating disorder within the UK.But on average, male sufferers will wait nearly three times as long female sufferers to be even referred for treatment. The research, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, also found that nine in ten patients with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia were in favour of mixed sex wards. Patients told researchers that all-female wards could encourage “competitive” tendencies – which could be lethal among those with such conditions.Dr Akiria Fukutomi, lead researcher, from Vincent Square Eating Disorder Service, run by Central and North West London Foundation trust, said: “The single-sex system disadvantages males as the majority of the patients are female.

Le 25 juin 2011 à 16:26 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

Here’s how to clean itcenter_img Enlarge ImageIf you’re feeling left out, you can always park your car in a Faraday cage. That should provide about the same experience. BMW When it was rumored that BMW would be moving to an annual subscription for Apple CarPlay, we called it “next-level gouging.” It’s not a move anyone really appreciates, but now, an unforeseen connection between various services reportedly left some BMW owners without CarPlay for a spell, which is even more frustrating.A problem with BMW’s ConnectedDrive online services caused some owners to lose Apple CarPlay functionality for a brief period of time. Without the service online to confirm the car’s subscription, owners last week found themselves missing the smartphone-mirroring system that they paid cold, hard cash for, Engadget reported Friday.By the end of last week, Engadget says, most users had seen the functionality return as ConnectedDrive’s services came back online. In the US, a BMW spokesperson told Engadget that a server migration was to blame, but it was working to get everything back up and running as quickly as possible. BMW first announced its decision in January. It was the first automaker to take Apple CarPlay and shift it from a one-time $300 purchase to an annual $80 subscription. BMW said this move added flexibility, so iPhone-toting owners won’t feel like they lost $300 if they later upgrade to an Android phone. This is, of course, a silly premise, and if anything, it feels like an excuse for BMW to bilk used-car buyers for $80 a year in the future. Nevertheless, it’s uncharted territory for Apple CarPlay, although Motor1 reported that Toyota may follow a similar strategy with the 2020 Supra, which shares its underpinnings (and telematics) with the BMW Z4. Hopefully, future ConnectedDrive outages won’t leave Supra drivers out in the cold, although the real hope should be that both automakers will ditch this idea and get back to charging one-time fees that represent pennies on the dollar compared with the car’s window sticker. 2020 BMW M340i review: A dash of M makes everything better Aug 31 • Best places to sell your used electronics in 2019 reading • BMW ConnectedDrive issues caused Apple CarPlay to disappear for some owners • 2 Comments Tags More From Roadshow 52 Photos BMW Applelast_img read more

FCC moves on closing digital divide

first_img 0 Here’s everything that 5G can do for you 5:13 How to solve the rural broadband problem? Fix the maps FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, a Republican, said that it’s important to get the funds allocated as soon as possible and that the agency couldn’t afford to wait for the new mapping plan to take effect. The new Rural Digital Opportunity Fund will essentially replace the Connect America Fund II auction for distributing USF money to rural carriers. The new fund will establish a two-phase reverse auction starting next year that will allow carriers to bid on the rights to use the funds to provide broadband and voice service in underserved high-cost areas, such as rural communities. The lowest bid wins the auction. Unlike the FCC’s Connect America Fund II auction, in which incumbent carriers got first dibs on deciding whether to serve a given area, the new fund will be available to any company, including cable providers or public utilities,  that propose building a broadband network. Fixing broadband mapsEven though the FCC is moving forward with the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund using existing broadband mapping criteria, the agency acknowledged its data collection program is flawed. And it voted to approve a long-awaited plan to improve the data it collects. Under the new proposal, broadband providers will be required to offer more detailed information on where they provide coverage and where they do not. The idea is to create a new map that will offer more “precise broadband service availability maps,” Pai said. The FCC’s current broadband maps have been widely criticized as inaccurate, showing broadband service in places where there isn’t and in other instances saying a location has no broadband when in fact it does, sometimes from multiple providers. We need maps before money. We need data before deployment. FCC commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel Tags Now playing: Watch this: These faulty maps have infuriated lawmakers who have been flooded with complaints from constituents, but the lack of visibility has also hampered the FCC’s efforts to distribute limited funds to help bring broadband to the 19 million people in this country, who still lack access even as the service is considered as important as water or electricity.Under the new plan, broadband providers will have to report broadband access using “shapefiles,” which will provide a more precise and detailed measurement. The current data collection includes information reported at the census block level, which counts an entire area as served even if only one household reports having broadband access. “We will no longer count everyone in the census block as served if just one person is served,” Pai said. The FCC will also collect feedback from the public and other agencies to ensure that the information provided by service providers is accurate. The three Republican commissioners supported the plan, but the two Democrats partially dissented. Rosenworcel said that the new proposal was a first step and that the agency still has a long way to go to gain public trust in its broadband data accuracy. She noted concerns over how the agency will push broadband providers to report accurate data. The trade group USTelecom, which represents many of the providers offering broadband in rural communities, applauded the FCC’s new mechanism for allocating USF funds for rural broadband, and the agency’s efforts to get more accurate broadband mapping information. The organization worked with several other groups to launch a two-state pilot in Virginia and Missouri in March to demonstrate how the FCC can identify where broadband can be offered and to determine which areas still lack broadband access. The group said that initial results of this study confirm the FCC’s assessment that its current process shows “serious discrepancies” in coverage. “Logically, in order for us (and the FCC) to declare mission accomplished [in closing the digital divide], we need to know which consumers do, and do not, have access to broadband,” Patrick Halley, senior vice president of advocacy and regulatory affairs for USTelecom, said in a blog post on Wednesday. “As the Commission’s draft data collection item acknowledges, the agency’s existing broadband availability data is ‘not sufficient to understanding where universal service support should be targeted and supporting the imperative of our broadband-deployment policy goals.'”Microsoft’s chief data analytics officer, John Kahan, wrote in a blog post on Wednesday that he is encouraged that many of the suggestions the FCC has considered mirrors those proposed by the company. Microsoft is working with USTelecom on its pilot program, too. But he acknowledged more work is needed to close the digital divide.  “Based on our data, about half of all Americans are not using the internet at broadband speeds at home,” he said. “This digital divide should be seen for the national crisis it is — without equal access to connectivity, we cannot provide equal opportunities to all Americans.”Other FCC mattersThe FCC also voted on several other items at the August meeting. One big one was the approval of new rules to go after illegal robocallers based overseas. The rules extend the Truth in Caller ID Act to text messages or international calls as intended under the passage of Ray Baum’s Act last year.According to the FCC, that act gives it the authority to broaden bans on illegal spoofing to text messages, calls originating outside the US and calls using voice over IP. The Truth in Caller ID Act, passed in 2009, already prohibits misleading or inaccurate caller ID “spoofing” with the intent to defraud for domestic callers, the agency said. But it doesn’t apply to text messages or international calls. center_img Share your voice Mobile FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has traveled throughout the US talking to people about the digital divide in rural communities. On one of those trips, he met with farmers in Idaho. FCC The Republican-led Federal Communications Commission voted Thursday to adopt a new mechanism for distributing subsidies to rural broadband providers. But Democrats want to see better data from a new broadband mapping effort first. At the agency’s August meeting, the FCC voted on two related items that commissioners say will help close the digital divide. First, the five-member commission unanimously voted to distribute more than $20 billion of Universal Service Fund subsidies over the next decade as part of the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund. It also adopted a long-awaited proposal to get more detailed information from broadband providers about where they offer service in order to improve the agency’s coverage maps. While the two items largely had bipartisan support, the two Democrat. They want more accurate mapping data before allocating any new funds to rural broadband providers. “The decisions we make now will direct funds for broadband for the next decade,” said Rosenworcel. “So choosing where those funds go for the next ten years without having accurate data is a real problem. … We need maps before money. We need data before deployment.” Post a comment 16 Photos FCClast_img read more
