Toronto leads the best-of-seven series 1-0 following Thursday’s 118-109 victory over the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors. It didn’t take long for Rivers’ comments to gain steam on social media, where they were met with calls of “tampering,” which the NBA collective bargaining agreement describes as actions that “directly or indirectly, entices, induces, persuades or attempts to entice, induce or persuade any Player, Coach, Trainer or General Manager or any other person who is under contract to any other Member of the Association to enter into negotiations for or relating to his services.”After the fine was announced, the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn asked NBA commissioner Adam Silver what Rivers should have done differently in the situation, having been asked about Leonard.A video of Silver’s response was posted on Washburn’s Twitter account.center_img Clippers hope they can play to their capabilities, quell Mavericks’ momentum Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error The NBA fined the Clippers $50,000 for violating the league’s anti-tampering role with comments that Coach Doc Rivers made this week regarding Kawhi Leonard on ESPN’s NBA Finals preview show, the league announced Friday. On the show, which aired Tuesday, Rivers answered Stephen A. Smith’s question about whether Leonard was “the best player in basketball at this particular moment in time.”Said Rivers: “He is the most like (Michael) Jordan that we’ve seen. Like, there’s a lot of great players. … LeBron is phenomenal, KD is phenomenal. Not that (Kawhi) is Jordan or anything like that, but he is the most like him.“Big hands. Post game. Can finish. Great leaper. Great defender. In-between game. If you beat him to the spot, he bumps you off. And then you add his 3-point shooting.” “I would just say Doc’s been at this a long time,” Silver said. “And it’s not a fun part of my job ever fining anyone. And I understand the competing interests of the media, hearing a coach’s view about a current NBA player. But it’s something where there’s a bright line in this league, and you’re not allowed to do it. And head coaches or team executives in those positions need to say, ‘I’m not permitted by the league to respond to that question.’ And it’s a balance of interests, I understand that. But he, unfortunately, crossed a bright line.”The Lakers were fined $50,000 last June for a violation of the anti-tampering rule, reportedly for comments that then President of Basketball Operations Magic Johnson made about Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo: “He plays above the rim, I never could do that. But in his understanding of the game, his basketball IQ, his creativity of shots for his teammates. That’s where we (have the same thing. Can bring it down, make a pass, make a play. I’m just happy he’s starting in the All-Star Game because he deserves that. And he’s going to be like an MVP, a champion, this dude he’s going to put Milwaukee on the map. And I think he’s going to bring them a championship one day.”last_img read more
