Officers’ CPR efforts help save man

first_imgThe Ambu-bag malfunctioned, and Ogle ran to get the Ambu-bag in her patrol car. Karson continued the chest compressions. “We just continued CPR until paramedics arrived,” he said. Three to four minutes passed before the paramedics arrived and took over. Paramedics continued to work on Garcia and got a pulse, Salazar said. It’s not the first time Karson performed CPR during a call. But he said it’s the second time he helped revive someone. It happened three to four months ago when someone was found in an alley off Pickering Avenue. All Whittier police are trained in CPR and carry Ambu-bags in their patrol cars, Salazar said. ruby.gonzales@sgvn.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3026 WHITTIER – Two officers used CPR to help save a man who was found not breathing in an apartment, officials said Tuesday. According to County Fire Captain Gary Morgan, officers Mike Karson and Nancy Ogle’s efforts allowed paramedics to revive the man, said Whittier Police spokeswoman Officer Diana Salazar. Daniel Garcia, 43, remains at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital. He was listed in poor condition Tuesday, said Terri Starkman, director of marketing for the hospital. “This was an excellent job by two veteran officers,” Salazar said. Karson and Ogle both arrived Monday afternoon at the apartment complex in the 12700 block of Oak Street on a call about a man down and not breathing. They ran to where people were pointing. In apartment No. 3, Karson said they found a man lying on the carpet on his back. “Officer Ogle felt for a pulse. She found none, so we started CPR,” Karson said. Karson did chest compressions while Ogle used the Ambu-bag, a device placed over the mouth that forces air into a person’s lungs. The roommate, using a translator, told them he went out, and when he came back a few minutes later found the man lying on the ground. Karson said he saw several bottles of heart medication in the apartment. last_img read more
