Uma Bharti ‘skips’ meal with Dalits

first_imgUnion Minister Uma Bharti skipped an event organised for having a meal with Dalits near here in Madhya Pradesh, saying she was not Lord Rama who would purify people by having food with them. Later, she apologised, claiming that she was not aware that she was supposed to have food with them. At the event held at Dadri village near here two days ago, the senior BJP leader had said she does not take part in such community meals as she doesn’t consider herself Lord Rama, who would purify people by having food with them. “I don’t go to the houses of Dalits to have meals, though I support this trait (breaking bread with the people of Scheduled Caste category),” said the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister while addressing a function in the village. She said that instead, she invites Dalits to her home to have food. ‘Come to my home’“Come to Delhi…my nephew’s wife would prepare food for you, I will serve meal to you, my nephew will collect your plate after you finish eating and wash them,” she said.last_img read more

Residents of Whitehall Get Titles

first_imgMONTEGO BAY – Residents, who occupy housing lots in the Whitehall phase one housing development in Westmoreland, were presented with their titles on Friday (Nov. 23), by Minister with responsibility for Housing, Hon. Dr. Morais Guy. More than 500 lots are available in the development, which was originally earmarked for hotel workers in the 1980’s.  The Government started the project under Operation PRIDE in the early 1990’s, and has decided to hand over the titles to owners for nominal fees ranging from $25,000 to $300,000. Minister Guy, in addressing the title handing over ceremony held at the Whitehall Early Childhood Institution, said he was pleased with the project. “I am impressed with the level of work being done. What I see at Whitehall is something that every recipient here, and those who are not here, ought to be proud off. It is a wonderful development,” he stated. He challenged the residents to take charge of the community. “Let us be the ones in charge and not others. I am talking about the criminals creeping in and taking charge. At the end, let us have a community that everyone can be proud of,” he urged. The Minister said he has mandated the Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ) to institute a competition among the various Operation Pride housing schemes, aimed at fostering civic pride. Such as competition, he argued, could encourage residents to always work to keep their communities in top shape, while they vie for prizes. “Let us see, of these communities, which one can vie for a prize from the Housing Agency of Jamaica, because, what we are talking about is not only national development, but personal and civic development as well,” he stated. The Whitehall development is a three phase project, with more than 2,000 houses to be provided at the end of the undertaking.  A total of 512 housing lots are available in phase 1, while 24 lots are earmarked for commercial activities. Member of Parliament for Western Westmoreland, Dr. Wykeham McNeil, who is also Minister of Tourism and Entertainment, informed that funding is now in place for the completion of the playfield, and community centre.last_img read more

Alando Terrelonge, is calling on parents to make sure their children eat healthy foods. The State Minister emphasised that children must get the best education, and unhealthy foods affect their growth.“If we want our children to get the best education, to live best lives, we have to focus on their health,” he said, adding that many young children are suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, due partly to unhealthy consumption. The agreement with Nestlé seeks to promote nutrition, health and wellness among school-aged children, and to encourage employability skills among young adults. The MOU will be executed through two main programmes – Nestlé for Healthier Kids, and the Nestlé Youth Employment Initiative.Under the programme, which now incorporates 15 schools and is expected to have 15,000 students participating by the end of the year, children will benefit from Wellness and Wheels class visits and International Chef Days; there will be Nutrition Education Training for Teachers, and the establishment of school gardens.Meanwhile, Principal of the Gregory Park Primary School, Richard Williams, said he is pleased that the students will be exposed to “appropriate” information and techniques to guide them in making the right choices.“We believe that our duty is to create an enabling environment for the overall development of our children, ensuring that they practise wholesome living and healthy lifestyles,” the Principal said. For his part, Managing Director of Nestlé Jamaica, Daniel Caron, said the programme is about enhancing the quality of life for families and individuals, and to showcase the importance of healthy diets and healthy choices.“A healthy mind comes from a healthy body, and we are making a difference. This is part of our giving back, being responsible in our communities,” Mr. Caron said.last_img read more
