Krittika Biswas case: Congressman writes to Hillary Clinton

first_imgEven as the US state department reiterated that Indian diplomat Debashish Biswas’s daughter Krittika, who recently sued New York City for illegally detaining her, did not enjoy diplomatic immunity, voices are being raised in the United States over the controversy involving the teenaged Indian schoolgirl.Leading Congressman Gary Ackerman has written a letter to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the Krittika issue. The letter comes ahead of Clinton’s visit to India on July 19.Ackerman’s letter might be the impetus needed to get Clinton sort out the issue before she reaches India. Krittika’s lawyer Ravi Batra had also earlier written to Clinton seeking her intervention. He had said that he was under pressure to withdraw the case.In his letter to Clinton, Ackerman writes: “I hope that somebody can take the time to remedy…. this injustice that has befallen this young girl and her fine diplomat family.”On the other side, US state department spokesman Mark Toner on Tuesday reiterated that Krittika had been allowed to contact her parents during the night she was detained and was released the next day.”As I’ve said before, as a family member of a consular officer at the Indian consulate in New York, she did not enjoy immunity from arrest from criminal or civil jurisdiction under international law. Certainly though, we value our partnership with India and we attach great importance to the presence of all Indian diplomatic and consular representatives in the United States. And we sympathise with Ms Biswas and her family,” Toner said in his latest clarification.advertisement”I think she was allowed to call her family and her father, who was the consul general, I believe. She was allowed to contact them,” he added.Krittika, whose father was the vice counsel at the Indian consulate in Manhattan, had been jailed by the New York Police Department for “cyber bullying”, a crime she had not committed, on February 8. She later sued the New York City authorities for $1.5 million. The teen had claimed that she had been ill-treated in prison after being arrested on charge of sending obscene emails to her teachers at Queens High School. She had alleged that she was not allowed to use the bathroom for a long-time when she was in custody. For more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.last_img read more

FIRs against Amrapali Leisure Valley director for duping several investors

first_imgNew Delhi: Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police on Saturday registered multiple FIRs against Amrapali Leisure Valley Pvt Ltd and its Director Anil Kumar Sharma for cheating multiple investors over the last decade by promising them flats and villas and misappropriating the booking amounts while not delivering the projects.According to one complainant, the accused approached him with a villa project to be constructed in Greater Noida. The accused was selling a villa with parking space to the complainant for a price of Rs 60.5 lakh at a booking amount of Rs 4 lakh. The complainant subsequently transferred the booking amount and signed an allotment/buyer agreement in August 2010. He was promised to get the delivery of the property within 18 months of receiving the booking amount. The complainant eventually had to take a loan of nearly Rs 36 lakh in order to pay the remaining amount for the villa, for which he is still paying interest. According to the complainant, the developer failed to even finish construction of the project. And in addition to this, the developer also charged close to Rs 1 lakh under the pretext of having to pay Noida Authority. In another FIR against the aforementioned accused, the complainant alleged that the developer duped investors by assuring them that they had necessary permissions from concerned authorities for the construction. And based on that, several advertisements were taken out in newspapers, inviting members of the public to invest. Complainants in both FIRs said that company employees and Director Sharma were coy about arranging meetings at the site office after receiving the necessary booking amounts. Even when the complainant from the second FIR went to the Delhi Government Mediation Centre, the accused kept avoiding them. In addition to this, she also alleged that the accused developer has not yet paid outstanding arrears to concerned authorities in as many as three other construction projects in the Greater Noida area. The complainant from the first FIR also alleged that after being handed an unfinished villa, he was further asked to pay Rs 8 lakh to a third party developer for the completion of his property. Both complainants have alleged that the accused have continuously duped multiple investors in such projects and misappropriated crores in the name of collecting booking amounts and paying relevant authorities. A case has been registered u/s 406/420/120B of the IPC against the accused and his accomplices at EOW.last_img read more

Ronaldo Its important to start well

first_imgCristiano Ronaldo is expecting a difficult time against Spain in Portugal’s opening game in the World Cup, but he is determined to avoid defeat in what he feels could potentially spoil their campaignThe defending European champions are being considered only the eighth favourites to claim glory at Russia this summer and will begin their campaign in a tricky encounter against the 2010 winners Spain.Ronaldo, who has enjoyed a trophy-laden career at club level, knows all about winning at the highest level and he warned Portugal that defeat on the first day could very well set them back.“A defeat on the first day puts you in a bad way for the rest of the tournament so it’s important to start well,” said the captain, according to Goal.Franck Ribery, FiorentinaFiorentina owner: “Ribery played better than Ronaldo!” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso was left gushing over Franck Ribery’s performance against Juventus, which he rates above that of even Cristiano Ronaldo’s.“But I believe both Spain and Portugal will reach the next round.”But the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is refusing to discount his team’s chances and made reference to their Euro 2016 triumph.Like now, the Selecao were considered outsiders for glory in France but they still managed to fight their way through to the final and lift the trophy.“To win the World Cup would be a dream for Portugal but to do it we have to play the same way we did in Euro 2016, as a team and all together,” added Ronaldo.last_img read more

The hearing comes three weeks after the shooting at Santa Fe High School that killed 10 people and injured more than a dozen others. Efforts to curtail school shootings are also moving ahead in Houston.Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Commission Against Gun Violence is working to come up with safety measures that can be put in place before the next school year starts.Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez is on the mayor’s commission. “This was already in the making for some time, so it wasn’t simply a response to Santa Fe,” Gonzalez says. “He’s concerned a lot about just everyday gun violence as well.”The commission held its first meeting at the end of May. Sheriff Gonzalez says Mayor Turner has also directed the group to come up with a second round of recommendations by year end, in time to propose them to state lawmakers before the Legislature convenes in January. Energetic cost of the entatic state of cytochrome c quantified

first_img Explore further Potential therapeutic target for Parkinson’s disease (Phys.org)—A team of researchers at Stanford University has used ultrafast x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy to quantify the entatic state of cytochrome c. In their paper published in the journal Science, the group outlines their procedure and what they learned. Kara Bren and Emma Raven with the University of Rochester and University of Leicester respectively offer a Perspective piece on the work done by the team in the same journal issue, and outline some of the implications regarding the role that the protein plays in cell life and death. More information: Metalloprotein entatic control of ligand-metal bonds quantified by ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy, Science (2017). science.sciencemag.org/cgi/doi … 1126/science.aam6203AbstractThe multifunctional protein cytochrome c (cyt c) plays key roles in electron transport and apoptosis, switching function by modulating bonding between a heme iron and the sulfur in a methionine residue. This Fe–S(Met) bond is too weak to persist in the absence of protein constraints. We ruptured the bond in ferrous cyt c using an optical laser pulse and monitored the bond reformation within the protein active site using ultrafast x-ray pulses from an x-ray free-electron laser, determining that the Fe–S(Met) bond enthalpy is ~4 kcal/mol stronger than in the absence of protein constraints. The 4 kcal/mol is comparable with calculations of stabilization effects in other systems, demonstrating how biological systems use an entatic state for modest yet accessible energetics to modulate chemical function. Credit: (c) Science  23 Jun 2017: Vol. 356, Issue 6344, pp. 1236 , DOI: 10.1126/science.aan5587 Journal information: Science Cytochrome c is a protein that exists in many plants, animals and unicellular organisms. In humans, its main purposes are ferrying electrons in mitochondria and assisting with apoptosis (normal cell death and the processes surrounding it.) These two functions have been shown in prior efforts to rely on the position of methionine residue. When sulfur works with iron, the protein is ready to transfer electrons. Otherwise, it engages in peroxidase activities. In this new effort, the researchers sought to better understand the energetics of the protein by probing the iron and sulfur bond. Entatic states, Bren and Raven point out, are very important in bioinorganic chemistry—it actually translates to something that is stretched when subjected to tension. To better understand the bond between the two elements, the researchers temporarily forced them apart using a Linac Coherent Light Source X-ray free electron laser and then timed how long it took the two components to reform using iron X-ray emission spectroscopy. They found that the environment in which they existed boosted bond strength by four kilocalories per mole, which was enough to allow the protein to toggle between its functional states and to quantify the energy cost of the entatic state. As Bren and Raven note, the results of the study have implications regarding the role that cytochrome plays in respiration, which they relate to living and apoptosis, which they relate to death. To promote continued living the protein helps to maintain a certain reduction potential. For apoptosis, the entatic state is disrupted allowing peroxidase activity to be enhanced.last_img read more

Food allergy can become fatal for your kid

first_imgA 13-year-old Indian-origin boy in London died last month after suffering a severe allergic reaction to a piece of cheese. According to media reports, Karanbir Cheema was allergic to wheat, gluten and dairy and his condition was well known at school but he came in contact with the allergen in cheese as it was allegedly forced on him by a schoolmate.Food allergy or intolerance, which can cause symptoms ranging from a harmless skin rash to a potentially lethal anaphylactic shock, are estimated to affect four to six per cent of children and four per cent of adults, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).If left untreated, a food allergy can turn fatal, especially in children, because the body’s immune system considers the proteins and complex carbohydrates present in the food as foreign.”It is only in rare cases that one can get a severe allergic response to any food allergen. Food items like cheese have other ingredients which may have caused severe allergic reaction. Commonly mild allergy, however, does not cause such severe reactions,” said Vivek Raj, Director (Gastroenterology), Max Super Speciality Hospital.According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there are eight foods that are common for allergic reactions in a large segment of the sensitive population. These include, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, shellfish, fish, wheat and their derivatives, soy and their derivatives, and sulphites (chemical-based, often found in flavours and colours in foods) at 10 parts per million (ppm) and over. These can cause several types of allergies such as skin manifestations which include rashes, swelling and itching, respiratory symptoms including wheezing, bronchospasm and choking and gastrointestinal symptoms including cramping, vomiting and diarrhoea. Some also cause low blood pressure which manifests as light-headedness, dizziness or even a fainting spell.Allergy to any food item may cause bronchial secretions, which can lead to bronchospasm – a sudden constriction of the muscles in the walls of the bronchioles in the respiratory tract.”As a result, the patient experiences choking and breathing difficulty, which, if not treated timely, may increase the risk of death,” added Rakesh Gupta, Senior Consultant, Apollo Hospitals.Further, children are much more vulnerable to food allergies than adults as the allergies fade away by adulthood.”As children grow older, they outgrow some of the allergies as their immune system matures. Also, the allergens are identified in childhood and then the person learns to avoid those as an adult,” Raj noted. However, allergies are not just hereditary but may be related to gender, according to recent research published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The study revealed that the genetic risk of a child having allergies doubles if the parent of the same sex is an allergy sufferer. Thus, mothers pass the risk of allergies to their daughters, as do fathers to their sons. Moreover, food allergies can worsen other conditions such as asthma and diabetes. If a patient already has other allergy-linked conditions like asthma, then the impact of food allergy can be more, doctors said. “As there is no cure to food allergy, the only way to prevent it is not to eat that food item,” suggested Ritika Samaddar, a Delhi-based nutritionist.”The allergy can be confirmed by skinprick tests and/or bloods tests to measure the allergy antibodies,” she added. Because fatal and near-fatal food allergy reactions can occur at school or other places outside the home, parents of a child with food allergies need to make sure that their child’s school has a written emergency action plan. The plan should provide instructions on preventing, recognising and managing food allergies and should be available in the school and during activities such as sporting events and field trips, experts suggested. However, “if any allergic item is consumed, the patient should be immediately rushed to the hospital. No drug should be taken without a doctor’s prescription”, Gupta said.last_img read more

No Canadian passport Dont try flying back into Canada as of Sept

first_imgNo Canadian passport? Don’t try flying back into Canada as of Sept. 30 Tags: Canadian TORONTO — If you have clients who are dual citizens, take note: starting Sept. 30 these travellers will need a Canadian passport to fly back into Canada, reflecting new policy from the federal government.Currently dual citizens flying back into Canada only need to show their passport from one country. A traveller who holds both Canadian and U.S. citizenship, for example, can right now use their U.S. passport to gain entry back into Canada, as long as they also show proof of residency in Canada (like a driver’s license).According to reports in the Toronto Star, that will all change on Sept. 30, when dual citizens must have a Canadian passport to get back into the country. The new policy is part of Canada’s new electronic screening system, and so far only applies to air travel. Some are calling the move a cash grab, and discriminatory. But Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada spokesperson Lindsay Wemp told the Star that a valid Canadian passport is the only acceptable travel document for the purpose of air travel. “As the government does not want Canadians to face travel-related delays, we strongly encourage all Canadian citizens to travel using a valid Canadian passport.”More news:  Air Canada’s global sales update includes Managing Director, Canada & USA SalesIt’s estimated that close to one million Canadians have citizenship for more than one country. Facebook is stepping up its video efforts with a n

first_imgFacebook is stepping up its video efforts with a new ‘suggested video’ feature that will reportedly see the social network share ad revenues with video creators for the first time.According to various US news outlets briefed on the plans, Facebook will place ads between suggested video clips, keeping 45% of revenues and paying 55% out to content partners. The suggested videos feature will serve up content related to previous videos watched on the site, with the social network already said to be conducting tests with professional content makers like the NBA, Fox Sports, Hearst and Funny or Die.The move has widely been seen as an effort by Facebook to step up competition with the likes of YouTube and attract more premium content to the site.A recent research report by Ampere Analysis said it expects Facebook to trigger an “advertising ‘arms race’” by competing directly against YouTube for user-uploaded video audiences and that the trials with content owners like NFL and Fox Sports suggest Facebook is “primed to become a plausible alternative to YouTube.”Separately, in a ‘Townhall Q&A’ earlier this week in which Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg answered questions from site users, Zuckerberg said that in the future “video will be even more important than photos” on the service.Asked about the future of Facebook, Zuckerberg said: “We used to just share in text, and now we post mainly with photos. In the future video will be even more important than photos. After that, immersive experiences like VR will become the norm.Eventually, Zuckerberg said he thinks people will have the power to share “full sensory and emotional experience” and that “one day, I believe we’ll be able to send full rich thoughts to each other directly using technology.”last_img read more

I have the usual number of stories for a Saturday

first_imgI have the usual number of stories for a Saturday column…and quite a few fall into the must read category, so I hope you can find the time for the ones that interest you.As democracy is perfected, the office of President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last…and the White House will be occupied by a downright moron. — H.L. Mencken, The Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920Today’s pop ‘blast from the past’ is by the Queen of Soul herself.  This hit was recorded in 1968…and you will know it instantly.  The link is here.Last week’s classical selection was by German composer Max Bruch…and this week’s is as well.  Last week it was his Scottish Fantasy…and this week it’s his Violin Concerto No. 1, in G minor, Op. 26…composed in 1866. I have a lot of ‘favourite’ violin concertos…and this is certainly one of them.  Here’s the incomparable Sarah Chang doing the honours in a posting over at youtube.com…and the link is here.  Neither the video quality, nor the fidelity, are the greatest…but it’s the only recording that I could find that has all three movements. After yesterday’s big run-up in the silver price, it’s easy to see that there is no real liquidity in the precious metals market, as most of the trading is of the high-frequency variety.  There are really no legitimate buyers and sellers present in the Comex futures market…just the machines. If left to their own devices, there isn’t a “free market” that wouldn’t melt down, or melt up, if given the opportunity to do so.  Chris Powell was oh, so prophetic with his quote…”There are no markets anymore…only interventions.”The Commitment of Traders Report, especially in silver, was a sight to behold…and with the way things are currently configured in all four precious metals, copper…and the dollar index…they are an ‘accident’ waiting to happen to the upside. However, since there are no free markets, when something does blow up…or melt down…it won’t be by accident.  JPMorgan et al were in full control of this market on the short side…and there’s no reason at all to assume that they won’t continue to hold the power when the smoke clears to the upside.JPMorgan will not only control the ‘when’…they will also determine how high and how fast we get to the new precious metal prices, which are all but baked in the cake.  They didn’t go to all this trouble over the last six months or so to extricate themselves from the short side of the gold market, to put their head back in the lion’s mouth again.  They’ll control things from the long side from now on.Even if you only read all the stories I have posted in this column this weekend, you should be able to tell from their contents that the entire planet is about to come unglued economically, financially…and monetarily.  It’s only the time line that is uncertain…and whether or not it will be a controlled event, or will events and circumstance quickly spiral out of the control of the powers that be?I don’t know the answer to that…and neither does anyone else.  So we wait. Here’s Nick Laird’s “Total PMs Pool” chart updated with data from the week just past…and it doesn’t require any further explanation from me.  As I said a week ago, I felt that we were done for liquidations out of the big ETFs with last week’s report…and it appears that this is the case.(Click on image to enlarge)Before heading off to bed, I’d like to point out that Casey Research has another FREE ON-LINE VIDEO EVENT in the works.  This one is entitled “GOLD: Dead Cat…or Raging Bull?”It will feature Jim Cramer, Eric Sprott, Doug Casey, Steven Feldman, Rob McEwen and Jeff Clark. They explore the recent fluctuations of the gold price and what it means for investors. Does gold’s drop signal the end of its bull run, or is it just taking a breather? Should investors load up on or unload gold? The free online event Gold: Dead Cat…or Raging Bull? hosted by The Street and Casey Research, with Jim Cramer, Eric Sprott, Doug Casey, and others will provide some answers. This free video will air on June 25th at 2:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time.  It will be available for viewing after the initial stream for those who have schedule conflicts.  You can check it out…and then sign up for it here.  It pretty much goes without saying that it will be worth your time. That’s all I have for the day…and the week.  Enjoy what’s left of your weekend…and I’ll see you here on Tuesday. When something does blow up…or melt down…it won’t be by accident. The gold price didn’t do much of anything in Far East trading…and then got sold down five bucks starting at 9:00 a.m. BST in London, with the low of the day coming minutes after 11:00 a.m…about two hours later. From there, the gold price was flat until five minutes before trading began on the Comex in New York.  The subsequent rally got chopped off by a short seller of last resort about twenty minutes later, when it appeared the market was about to go “no ask”…and the gold price was about to punch through the $1,400 spot price ceiling.  A second rally at the London p.m. gold fix suffered the same fate…and after that the price didn’t do much until after the Comex close. Then starting around 2:30 p.m. EDT, the gold price began to slowly tick higher for the rest of the New York Access market.  The low tick in London looked to be around the $1,378 spot mark…and the high tick in New York was recorded by Kitco as $1,393.60 spot…and that occurred at the London p.m. gold fix.Gold finished at $1,3191.50 spot…up $5.80 on the day…and net volume was a very light 106,000 contracts. Here’s the New York Spot Gold [Bid] chart that shows the New York action in far more detail.Silver traded in a very tight range in both Far East and London yesterday…and was down about 20 cents when the price blasted off at 8:15 a.m. in New York yesterday morning.  The market went “no ask” fifteen minutes later…before the usual not-for-profit seller[s] showed up.  By 9:20 a.m. the price was back down to $22.07 spot…and barely moved for the remainder of the trading day.Kitco recorded the high tick as $22.68 spot…and if “da boyz” hadn’t shown up when they did, we would be looking at a very big silver price right now.But when all was said and done at the 5:15 p.m EDT close in New York, silver was only up 23 cents on the day…and closed at $22.08…and above the $22 price ceiling.  Volume, net of roll-overs out of the July delivery month, were a bit heavier than normal…close to 33,000 contracts. Here’s the New York Spot Silver [Bid] chart, so you can see the dramatic action in the first 15 minutes of Comex trading for yourself. The dollar index closed in New York late Thursday afternoon at 80.72…and then fell to 80.61 by 10:00 a.m. in Tokyo.  From there it rallied to its high of the day…80.99…just minutes after 8:30 a.m. in New York.  At that point, the index fell completely out of bed…hitting a low of 80.65 by 11:40 a.m. EDT.  The subsequent rally was tiny…and very short.  From there the dollar index headed lower, finishing the Friday session on its low tick…80.62…and down 10 basis points from Thursday. You should carefully note that vertical price spikes in both gold and silver got hammered flat at the precise moment that the dollar index fell off a cliff just minutes after 8:30 a.m. EDT.  There’s absolutely no chance that this was a coincidence.  As Chris Powell’s famous quote goes…”There are no markets anymore…only interventions”.The gold stocks opened in the black…but quickly began to sell off…and they kept right on going down despite the fact that the gold price finished in positive territory yesterday.  The HUI finished down 1.66%.The silver stocks didn’t do well, either…and Nick Laird’s Intraday Silver Sentiment Index closed down 1.82%.(Click on image to enlarge)Here’s Nick’s Silver 7 chart that shows the near-term price action in a longer term perspective.(Click on image to enlarge)The sell-off in the precious metal stocks probably had more to do with what was happening in the general equity markets in New York at the time. The CME’s Daily Delivery Report showed that a surprisingly large 414 gold contracts were posted for delivery on Tuesday within the Comex-approved depositories.  The two big short/issuers of note were Barclays with 324 contracts out of its client account…and ABN Amro with 88 contracts.  The three largest long/stoppers were HSBC USA, Barclays…and Canada’s Bank of Nova Scotia, with 234, 94 and 69 contracts respectively.  The long/stoppers at Barclays were in the bank’s proprietary [in-house] trading account…the bank betting against its customers again. There were only 4 silver contracts posted for delivery on Tuesday…and the link to yesterday’s Issuers and Stoppers Report is here. There were no reported changes in either GLD or SLV yesterday…and no sales report from the U.S. Mint, either.Over at the Comex-approved depositories on Thursday, they reported receiving 701,662 troy ounces of silver…and 21,763 troy ounces were shipped out the door.  The link to that activity is here.In gold on the same day…9,027 troy ounces were reported received…and 12,210 troy ounces were shipped out.  The link to that activity is here. The Commitment of Traders Report was pretty much as expected, as there were improvements in the Commercial net short position in both gold and silver…but particularly silver…and several new records were set.In silver, the Commercial net short position [the total Commercial short holders subtracted from the total Commercial long holders] declined by 16.9 million ounces…and is now down to a shockingly low 25.1 million ounces.  Reader E.W.F. said that “In silver, the Commercial traders hold their smallest net short position since 29 July 1997.”  That’s almost 16 years ago!!!The four largest traders are short 196.5 million ounces of silver…and the next ‘5 through 8’ traders are short an additional 55.9 million ounces of silver.  Ted says that he’s no longer sure what JPMorgan’s short position in silver might be.As far as concentration goes, once you remove all the market-neutral spread trades from the total open interest, the Big 4 are short 35.3% of the entire Comex futures market in silver.  The short positions of the ‘5 through 8’ traders adds another 10.0%.  So the Big 8, in total, are short 45.3% of the entire Comex futures market in silver.Reader E.W.F. says that “the silver raptors [the small commercial traders other than the Big 8] hold their largest net long position in the history of the data.”In gold, the Commercial net short position declined by 333,000 troy ounces…and is now down to 5.83 million ounces.  Reader E.W.F. says that..”the Commercials hold their smallest net short position in gold since 31 May 2005.”The four largest traders are short 9.94 million ounces of gold…and the ‘5 through 8’ traders are short an additional 4.67 million ounces. As far as concentrations go, once the market-neutral spread trades are removed from gold’s total open interest, the four largest traders are short 31.0 percent of the entire Comex futures market in gold…and the ‘5 through 8’ traders add another 14.6 percentage point.  So the Big 8 in total are short 45.6% of the entire Comex futures market in gold.Reader E.W.F. pointed out that “the gold raptors are net long 87,851 contracts.  This is their largest net long position since April 10, 2001.  On that date the gold raptors were net long 95,984 contracts.”Here’s Nick Laird’s “Days of World Production to Cover Comex Short Positions” chart for all physically traded commodities on that exchange.(Click on image to enlarge)Here’s your “cute quota” for the day…and don’t forget that the “cute quota” will be included with “The Funnies” starting with Tuesday’s column.last_img read more

Weve all seen the statistic since 1913 the doll

first_imgWe’ve all seen the statistic: since 1913, the dollar has lost 98% of its purchasing power. That means that roughly, you now need $50 to buy what you could have bought for just $1 a little over 100 years ago. But the media are obsessed with a strong dollar today. To counteract the hysteria, NPR reported a refreshing point: Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker said in an interview Monday that on one hand, having a strong currency “is a reflection of the fact the U.S. economy is strong. … So that’s the good news.” On the other hand, “it would be naïve to say the strong dollar isn’t something that some companies are taking into account” and might make land and equipment too expensive here, she said. The key to overcoming that currency drawback is to be sure foreign investors see the big picture and understand the long-term value of the U.S. market, she said. “Your location decisions are ones made for decades” and should not be based on today’s currency bounces, she noted. The rising dollar has made US assets, equity included, more expensive. A stronger dollar also means it takes more foreign currency to buy goods priced in the USD. This is one reason CEOs often mention “currency headwinds” on earnings calls. That said, I agree with Ms. Pritzker. Taking a longer-term view on the dollar can benefit businesses and investors alike. And such a view offers a lot of food for thought: The chart shows the decline of the US dollar’s value relative to a basket of foreign currencies, including the euro, Canadian and Australian dollars, Japanese yen, British pound, Swiss franc, and Swedish krona. The 2014-2015 uptick looks impressive, no doubt, but the black trend line tells a different story: the dollar is no long-distance champ. This is why I discouraged investing in securities tied to the US dollar, such as Treasuries, in my last post. Despite its recent rise, the long-term value proposition of the world’s reserve currency looks unappealing. Stocks, however, will benefit from a weaker dollar in the long term, and this is why we keep looking for equity opportunities for the Money Forever Portfolio.last_img read more

A former care minister has suggested that the Libe

first_imgA former care minister has suggested that the Liberal Democrats might be in favour of reopening the Independent Living Fund (ILF).Norman Lamb (pictured), who was care minister in the coalition for nearly three years, told Disability News Service (DNS) that it was “intolerable” that former ILF-users were now facing cuts to their support packages, after the fund’s closure on 30 June. And he called on the government to act, potentially by reopening the fund.He spoke out after hearing from DNS how disabled campaigners were warning that “dangerous” cuts to support were now exposing government promises that former ILF-users would not lose out from its closure.ILF was run by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and when it closed on 30 June was helping nearly 17,000 disabled people with the highest support needs to live independently. But the coalition government decided that it should be scrapped, promising instead that nine months’ worth of non-ring-fenced funding would be transferred through the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) to councils in England, and to devolved governments in Wales and Scotland. The transition process has been hit by reports of delays in reassessments for former ILF-users and cuts to their care packages, and government pre-closure statements and pledges appear to be falling apart.Lamb was speaking to DNS two days after delivering a well-received speech to his party’s annual conference in Bournemouth, which highlighted the need to address a possible £5 billion funding shortfall in social care by 2020.He told DNS that the ILF principle was “one that I strongly support”, as it “enables people to determine their own priorities”.Lamb said he was concerned not only about former ILF-users, but also about many other disabled people who faced the “full, emerging, developing crisis in social care”.He said: “I think the government needs to recognise what is actually happening… look closely at the evidence and act on it.“What would be intolerable is if people with complex disabilities were not getting the care packages that they need to enable them to lead the best life possible in those circumstances.”He added: “The consequences of the funding squeeze that we now face are potentially disastrous.”He pointed out that ILF had been funded by DWP and that it was a DWP decision to close it, with the first steps taken by the Conservative minister for disabled people Maria Miller in December 2010.Lamb said: “They need to reflect on what’s happened. They need to recognise the evidence of what is actually happening and rethink this.“Because of the general squeeze on budgets, [it appears] they are not being protected… so they need to go back to the drawing board and recognise actually that this approach of giving money to people with highly complex disabilities to enable them to choose their priorities and dictate how the money is spent is a good one and they ought to be prepared to revisit in the light of the evidence.”Asked whether the cuts to support for former ILF-users should have been predicted by coalition ministers, he said: “I am prepared to accept that, but they should act on this now that the evidence is emerging of what is happening.”He said he had an “open mind” on whether ILF should be reopened, but he said it was “intolerable” if former ILF-users were losing out because they had been “subsumed” within a larger local authority system that itself was facing extreme funding pressures. He said: “It needs to be addressed by government, either by reopening the fund, or by coming up with some other solution to ensure that people with complex disabilities get the support that they need.”He added: “The bottom line in all of this is how much as a society we are prepared to pay to support people with complex needs that go beyond medical need. That’s the very thing I have been trying to highlight this week.”Lamb said that the idea of splitting responsibility for disability between three departments – DWP, the Department of Health and DCLG – was “not particularly rational”.He said: “I am open-minded about the mechanisms you use and I think there is lots of scope for rationalising it and simplifying who is responsible within government for supporting these people.“But the bottom line is in my view as a civilised society we need to be prepared to come up with enough money to support people with complex needs properly to enable them to live a decent life.”Lamb told delegates earlier in the week that he was “starting a national conversation” about the “emerging crisis” in funding of both health and social care. And he said he was interested in the idea of a clearly-identified contribution to NHS and social care to be included on people’s pay-slips, as well as a right for local areas to raise additional funds for the NHS and social care if they chose to do so.Lamb pointed in his speech to his party’s many achievements on mental health in the coalition, including halving the number of people in mental health crisis who end up in police cells; drawing up the first national standards for mental health crisis care; initiating a service to divert people with mental ill-health, learning difficulties or autism away from prison; setting a “zero suicide ambition” for the NHS; and trebling the number of people accessing psychological therapies. He told delegates: “Our mission must be very simple: equality. Nothing more, nothing less. We must end the historic injustice suffered by those with mental ill-health.”last_img read more

Zuckerberg Some Tech Is Worrying but Not Facebook

first_img News reporter May 26, 2017 Zuckerberg: Some Tech Is Worrying, but Not Facebook Mark Zuckerberg The story of Facebook’s founding has entered American legend, but its founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg couldn’t resist briefly rehashing its conception in a Harvard dorm room during a commencement speech at his alma mater on Thursday.Zuckerberg, who founded Facebook before dropping out of Harvard, also used his speech to explain his view of technology in starkly clear terms: he believes that technological progress as a whole is threatening to many people’s way of life, but certain individual technologies, including Facebook, actually change people’s lives for the better. It all comes down to a sense of purpose, according to Zuckerberg. Millennials like him have it, while many older people have lost it thanks to technological change.”When our parents graduated, that sense of purpose reliably came from your job, your church, your community,” Zuckerberg said. “But today, technology and automation are eliminating jobs. Membership in a lot of communities has been declining, and a lot of people are feeling disconnected and depressed, and are trying to fill a void in their lives.”His remarks echo those of many government and business leaders who are grappling with the prospect of robots taking over people’s jobs. The European Union is even considering a form of social security tax on automated factories to make up for an anticipated decline in wages being paid to humans. Others, including U.S. Secretary of Labor Steve Mnuchin, aren’t as worried about a robot revolution. To Zuckerberg, though, not all technology is menacing, especially not the world’s largest social network. Echoing the company’s motto, he explained that Facebook is the way the world connects, and he suggested that the world is a better place because of it. “This idea was so clear to us, that all people want to connect, so we just kept working on it,” he said, recalling early coding sessions in his dorm room. What Zuckerberg didn’t get around to in his speech is that more than 10 years after those sessions, Facebook is now a multinational company that snapped up many smaller ones, including Instagram, which the Royal Society for Public Health recently determined to be the “most detrimental” social media platform for young people’s mental health and wellbeing. The Last Lunar Eclipse of 2019 Occurs Tuesday Just in Time for

first_img This Video of a 1900 Total Solar Eclipse Is the Oldest One Ever (and Made by a Magician!) How Yesterday’s Total Solar Eclipse Looked From a Plane (Photos, Video) Tomorrow (July 16), the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11 to land astronauts on the moon and two weeks after the moon totally eclipsed the sun, it will be the moon’s turn to undergo an eclipse of its own. The full moon, in Sagittarius, will pass partway through the southern part of the Earth’s shadow resulting in a partial lunar eclipse. This event favors the Eastern Hemisphere, known colloquially as the “Old World”: Africa, Europe and western Asia. Most of South America will see the moon rise already within the Earth’s shadow. Conversely, for central and eastern Asia and Australia, the eclipse will still be in progress when the moon sets during the dawn hours of July 17. Unfortunately, North America will be completely shut out; the eclipse occurs during the daytime with the moon below the horizon. These Sharks Were Too Busy to Notice a Bigger Predator Watching ThemThe unexpected twist at the end of this feeding frenzy delighted scientists.Credit: NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, Windows to the Deep 2019Your Recommended PlaylistVolume 0%Press shift question mark to access a list of keyboard shortcutsKeyboard Shortcutsplay/pauseincrease volumedecrease volumeseek forwardsseek backwardstoggle captionstoggle fullscreenmute/unmuteseek to %SPACE↑↓→←cfm0-9接下来播放Headbutting Tiny Worms Are Really, Really Loud00:35关闭选项Automated Captions – en-US facebook twitter 发邮件 reddit 链接https://www.livescience.com/65941-lunar-eclipse-july-2019-explained.html?jwsource=cl已复制直播00:0002:2802:28  Related: Amazing Photos of the Super Blood Wolf Moon of 2019! The weak, pale-gray penumbral shading is detectable only within about 25 minutes of the partial eclipse’s beginning or end, depending on sky conditions and how carefully you look. A faint shading or smudge on the moon’s disk should become evident for most viewers around 19:35 UTC, and the last vestige of any faint tarnishing should disappear around 23:25 UTC. This will be the moon’s last interaction with Earth’s umbra for a while. During the next four lunar eclipses — all during the year 2020 — the moon will pass only through Earth’s penumbra. We’ll have to wait until the morning of May 26, 2021, when the central and western United States will be treated to a total lunar eclipse, although totality will be relatively short, lasting less than 18 minutes. Then, on the morning of Nov. 19, 2021, North Americans will be treated to an eclipse covering 98% of the moon’s diameter. Finally, on the night of May 15-16, 2022, an unusually long total lunar eclipse will be visible over most of the Americas. Totality will last almost 1.5 hours. Mark your calendars. This EagleNosed ShovelChinned Dinosaur May Be the Weirdest Thing You See Today

first_img The lower jaw and teeth of Aquilarhinus, showing the unusual upturned end of the mandible. Credit: Photo by Albert Prieto- Marquez; material housed at the Texas Vertebrate Paleontology Collections at The University of Texas at Austin. A newfound duck-billed dinosaur species that lived about 80 million years ago had a face so bizarre that scientists named the animal “eagle-nose shovel-chin.” Its jaws resembled a pair of gardening tools, with wavy ridges along the edges in a “W” shape. An arching crest in the middle of its face was curved like the majestic beak of an eagle, giving the dinosaur’s profile the appearance of a prominent, humped nose. Scientists found the unusual fossil skull and a partial skeleton of the animal in the 1980s in Big Bend National Park, a site in southwestern Texas, though the specimen was not analyzed in detail until recently. The duck-billed weirdo shared some features in common with other duck-billed and crested dinosaurs, the group Saurolophidae, but it was more primitive, offering intriguing new clues about how the group’s trademark crests evolved, scientists reported in a new study. In this case, the researchers couldn’t resist calling out the dinosaur’s bizarre face. The genus name “Aquilarhinus” combines the Latin word “aquila,” for “eagle,” and the Greek word “rhinos,” which means “nose.” The species name “palimentus” comes from the Latin words for “shovel” and “chin,” according to the study. All known dinosaurs in this group (also called hadrosaurids) have beak-like jaws that expand at the end into a scoop shape, “hence the nickname ‘duck-billed’ dinosaurs,” said lead study author Albert Prieto-Márquez, a researcher with the Catalan Institute of Palaeontology Miquel Crusafont in Barcelona, Spain. “However, they differ from Aquilarhinus in that this ‘scoop’ is all concave. In contrast, in Aquilarhinus, there was a rise, a convex relief at the center of the ‘scoop,'” Prieto-Márquez told Live Science in an email. That ridged, scooping chin likely came in handy millions of years ago; what is now a dry and rocky landscape in Texas was back then a coastal swamp or marsh. Aquilarhinus probably used its peculiar jaws to scoop vegetation from the bottom of a muddy creek bed, the researchers wrote. However, it’s less clear what the dinosaur’s prominent nasal crest was for, though it may have been used as a display to help the dinosaurs recognize members of their own kind and compete for mates, Prieto-Márquez said. “The crest of Aquilarhinus is simpler in structure than that of most other hadrosaurids, except members of kritosaurini (a subgroup of hadrosaurids),” he explained. “In both Aquilarhinus and kritosaurins for which the crest is known, this is just a fold of the nasal bone, giving them a Roman nose appearance.” Photos: School-Bus-Size Dinosaur Discovered in Egypt Photos: Spiky-Headed Dinosaur Found in Utah, But It Has Asian Roots Photos: Duck-Billed Dinosaurs Found in Alaska Like other hadrosaurs, or duck-billed dinosaurs, Aquilarhinus had a bony crest on its skull. But despite the superficial similarities, Aquilarhinus proved to be a more primitive hadrosaurid than Gryposaurus, taking up a position at the very base of the group’s family tree. This hinted that the diverse shapes of hadrosaurid cranial crests all stemmed from a structure that began as a simple arched nose, Prieto-Márquez said. Aquilarhinus, aka eagle-nose shovel-chin, also provides a missing puzzle piece concerning where hadrosaurids may have originated. These dinosaurs were common across Europe, Asia, North and South America, and Antarctica during the latter part of the Cretaceous period (145.5 million to 65 million years ago), and the appearance of this primitive specimen supports an increasingly popular hypothesis that hadrosaurids first appeared in the southern part of North America, the study authors said. The findings were published online July 12 in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology.last_img read more

It appears he has been thinking in terms of getting the members disqualified on ground of their defying the party whip. However, their resignations have preceded issuing of any whip by their parties and such a course of action by the Speaker would not have been in accordance with norms,” Chaudhary said.He said defiance of whip would have made no difference as action taken under the 10th Schedule of Constitution (anti-defection law) also has the same effect, that of a member being disqualified.”The delay has led to a situation wherein the matter has reached the Supreme Court and the action of the assembly Speaker has been subjected to judicial scrutiny… instances like these lower the dignity of the legislature and hamper its credibility. It would be better for the Speaker to accept the resignations without any delay. This would enhance his stature and protect the dignity of the legislature,” the Bihar Assembly Speaker added. The Supreme Court Friday restrained the Karnataka Speaker from taking any decision till Tuesday on the resignation and disqualification of 10 rebel MLAs.The 10 rebel MLAs moved the apex court alleging that the Speaker was not accepting their resignations. They are: Pratap Gouda Patil, Ramesh Jarkiholi, Byrati Basavaraj, B C Patil, S T Somashekhar, Arbail Shivaram Hebbar, Mahesh Kumathalli, K Gopalaiah, A H Vishwanath and Narayana Gowda.ALSO READ | Kumaraswamy wants floor test, SC asks Speaker to not act on resignations | All that happenedALSO WATCH | Kumaraswamy trust vote offer a googly or full toss? For the latest World Cup news, live scores and fixtures for World Cup 2019, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
