Volvos Shared Care Key Will Keep Your Teens From Speeding

first_img March 21, 2019 2 min read Volvo is continuing its bet on safety over speed. The company announced today that, beginning with model year 2021, all new cars will come with a “Care Key.” Owners will be able to set a speed limit attached to the key, and anyone using it will be capped at that speed. The feature might be especially helpful if you plan on lending your car to new or speed-hungry drivers, and Volvo is hoping insurance companies will offer incentives to those who use Care Key.Earlier this month, the company announced it would cap the speed in all of its new cars at 112 mph, starting with the 2021 model year. Care Key will let owners set their top speeds even lower, if they choose. The company also announced plans to use cameras and sensors inside its cars to detect drunk and distracted driving.Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars’ chief executive, has asked if car makers have a right or an obligation to install technology that changes owners’ behavior. Both Care Key and the added cameras and sensors raise the question of how automakers can and should incorporate new technologies, especially as so many are developed by the self-driving car industry.Volvo Cars introduces Care Key as standard on all cars for safe car sharinghttps://t.co/nqqazPMCae pic.twitter.com/iWTWwzqdSR— Volvo Cars Newswire (@volvocarsnews) March 20, 2019 Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Business –shares Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. Zuckerberg Some Tech Is Worrying but Not Facebook

first_img News reporter May 26, 2017 Zuckerberg: Some Tech Is Worrying, but Not Facebook Mark Zuckerberg The story of Facebook’s founding has entered American legend, but its founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg couldn’t resist briefly rehashing its conception in a Harvard dorm room during a commencement speech at his alma mater on Thursday.Zuckerberg, who founded Facebook before dropping out of Harvard, also used his speech to explain his view of technology in starkly clear terms: he believes that technological progress as a whole is threatening to many people’s way of life, but certain individual technologies, including Facebook, actually change people’s lives for the better. It all comes down to a sense of purpose, according to Zuckerberg. Millennials like him have it, while many older people have lost it thanks to technological change.”When our parents graduated, that sense of purpose reliably came from your job, your church, your community,” Zuckerberg said. “But today, technology and automation are eliminating jobs. Membership in a lot of communities has been declining, and a lot of people are feeling disconnected and depressed, and are trying to fill a void in their lives.”His remarks echo those of many government and business leaders who are grappling with the prospect of robots taking over people’s jobs. The European Union is even considering a form of social security tax on automated factories to make up for an anticipated decline in wages being paid to humans. Others, including U.S. Secretary of Labor Steve Mnuchin, aren’t as worried about a robot revolution. To Zuckerberg, though, not all technology is menacing, especially not the world’s largest social network. Echoing the company’s motto, he explained that Facebook is the way the world connects, and he suggested that the world is a better place because of it. “This idea was so clear to us, that all people want to connect, so we just kept working on it,” he said, recalling early coding sessions in his dorm room. What Zuckerberg didn’t get around to in his speech is that more than 10 years after those sessions, Facebook is now a multinational company that snapped up many smaller ones, including Instagram, which the Royal Society for Public Health recently determined to be the “most detrimental” social media platform for young people’s mental health and wellbeing. ADM set to combine its oilseeds and origination businesses

first_imgADM set to combine its oilseeds and origination businessesPosted By: Martin Whiteon: May 30, 2019In: Agriculture, Business, Food, Industries, IngredientsPrintEmailADM has announced that it will combine its origination and oilseeds business units, the second major reconsolidation undertaken by the company in just over a year. The new business unit will be called Ag Services & Oilseeds and will begin operating on 1 July 2019. The division will be led by Greg Morris, formerly president of ADM’s oilseeds unit.Major grain companies such as ADM and Cargill have made several organisational changes over the last year as they aim to address factors such as low crop prices and the prolonged US-China trade dispute, which has stifled global material flows.ADM was also gravely affected by severe weather in the US at the start of the year, as major spring floods led to a 40% dip in net earnings in its first-quarter results, while the company’s operating profit dropped by approximately $50 million in the quarter.ADM says that the move will create a simpler organisational structure, which will help to accelerate growth.Chairman and CEO Juan Luciano said: “ADM’s ability to provide value through the entire supply chain – from origination to processing to transportation to ingredients and solutions – is what sets us apart from others in the industry.“Bringing the unparalleled strength of our global origination, global trade and destination marketing businesses and our transportation network together with our leadership in oilseeds processing and value-added product mix is a natural evolution.“This helps us better integrate the supply and value chains to deliver significant simplification and efficiency to the day-to-day business.“I am personally committed to the strategic value that simplification can bring to our organization, and feel our ability to accelerate purposeful value creation within ADM has never been greater.”Share with your network: Tags: ADMUSlast_img read more

A day that will live in infamy. This is the day California state regulations for cannabis compliance go into effect, just six months after Golden State made recreational marijuana use legal.Related: California Unleashes a Massive Market for Legal CannabisCalifornia’s strict quality standards have been a headache for many legal marijuana providers. The United Cannabis Business Association, which represents nearly 150 marijuana businesses, wrote a letter to Governor Jerry Brown last Friday, urging him to extend the deadline. “Forcing the industry into compliance … will further cripple the already struggling regulated market,” the letter said. The potential outcome could be so bad some in the industry are calling it “The Green Apocalypse.”But the Bureau of Cannabis Control seemed to offer no indication that it would change its plans. Spokesman Alex Traverso responded in an email, “We issued our emergency regulations back in November, and at that time we were pretty clear about the fact that there would be a six-month transition period for retailers to use up their existing supply. We felt that was a sufficient amount of time to deplete stock on hand and adapt to California’s new rules.”Related: California’s ‘Pot Desert’ ProblemGreen SaturdayWhat has been a nightmare for cannabis vendors, could be a windfall for cannabis shoppers. “There’s going to be a lot of massive sales, a lot of retails fire-selling a lot of products,” Nick Danias, manager of The Pottery cannabis dispensary in mid-city Los Angeles, told Reuters.“It’s about getting rid of a lot of older product that doesn’t meet city and state requirements and getting through that old inventory and moving on to the next steps after July 1,” he said.So big are the sales, the industry dubbed the night before the regulations “Green Saturday,” after the infamous pre-Christmas shopping spree “Black Friday.“People are buying stuff they don’t really need,” Scott Lambert, the chief executive of The OG Collective in Cathedral City, told The Desert Sun. “It’s just like Toys ‘R’ Us going out of business.” Free Green Entrepreneur App Downtown San Francisco Download Our iOS Applast_img read more

Hemp Oil vs CBD Oil Whats the Difference

first_imgCannabis Each week hear inspiring stories of business owners who have taken the cannabis challenge and are now navigating the exciting but unpredictable Green Rush. Listen Now –shares Hemp Oil vs. CBD Oil: What’s the Difference? Easy Search. Quality Finds. Your partner and digital portal for the cannabis community. Add to Queue This past December, the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill may have sparked a new oil boom. For the first time, hemp — the form of cannabis that doesn’t get you high — became federally legal. The news heated up the already hot CBD oil market because CBD, the medicinal, nonpsychoactive compound in marijuana, is also found in hemp. In other words, CBD oil, as long as you derive it from hemp, is legal everywhere. But is it? Does this mean an explosion of new CBD products? And what’s hemp oil? Here’s the breakdown. Related: The Most Experienced Guy In Cannabis Has a Warning for YouHemp Oil: It’s Straightforward By the Farm Bill’s definition, legal hemp products can contain up to 0.3 percent THC — not enough to produce a psychoactive effect. Hemp seed oil is extracted from the seeds and used as a cooking oil, and in lotions and soaps. It contains no CBD or other cannabinoids.  Related: Meet the Entrepreneur Selling Weed In Non-Cannabis Stores Across EuropeCBD Oil: It’s ComplicatedWhat’s known as cannabidiol (CBD) oil is commonly extracted from the flowers of the hemp plant. But it can also be derived from a marijuana plant. Either way, its uses are typically more medicinal. Solid research on cannabis has been sorely hampered — it’s a challenge to do big studies on a federally illegal substance. But a 2017 comprehensive review by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine found good evidence for cannabis reducing chronic pain. Athletes have known this, using CBD products to manage pain and to lessen inflammation. Others use CBD for depression and anxiety. Some people give it to their pets to lower stress. Perhaps most concretely, last June, the FDA approved the first-ever CBD-based drug, Epidiolex, to treat seizures associated with two severe forms of epilepsy. The FDA, however, has not been so approving when it comes to CBD oil in general, no matter where you extract it from. Even today, if you have legal hemp-derived CBD, you can’t sell it as a dietary supplement, you can’t put it in ingestibles for interstate commerce, and you definitely can’t claim therapeutic or medicinal benefits without FDA approval. Although CBD oil is legal in some states, federally, it’s still a gray area: The FDA promises that it will “continue to take steps to make the pathways for the lawful marketing of these products more efficient.” In the meantime, entrepreneurs should take the big excitement over CBD oil from hemp with a dose of caution. Follow dispensaries.com on Instagram to stay up to date on the latest cannabis news. Nestlé and Danone sign up to UK infant formula code of practice

first_img© Sander van der Wel/FlickrNestlé and Danone sign up to UK infant formula code of practicePosted By: Contributoron: November 07, 2018In: Dairy, Health, IndustriesPrintEmailUK manufacturers of infant formula have committed to a new code of practice which aims to bring a uniformity of standards across the sector.Developed by the British Specialist Nutrition Association – whose members include Danone, Nestlé and Cargill – the Infant Nutrition Industry (INI) code is designed to shed more light on how the UK infant nutrition industry operates and the high standards that can be expected from it.The code will be regulated by an independent authority, which will investigate any complaints made and have the power to require any company found to be in breach of the code to take appropriate steps to correct it.In a statement, the British Specialist Nutrition Association said the guidelines also cover areas such product quality, composition, safety, sales, marketing and clinical research. The code is said to demonstrate the infant nutrition industry’s commitment to responsible marketing and transparency as per the World Health Organization’s International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes 1981.Director general of the British Specialist Nutrition Association Declan O’Brien said: “The INI code has been introduced to bring a clarity and uniformity of standards across the infant nutrition businesses. It has been modelled on the industry codes of other highly regulated industries, such as the ABPI code of practice for the pharmaceutical industry.“This reflects the fact that the infant nutrition industry is one of the most tightly regulated food sectors in the world. Any complaint made against a company under the INI code will be regarded as a serious matter both by that company and by the industry as a whole.“The INI Code of Practice Authority will require appropriate corrective action to be taken by any company found to be in breach of the INI code. In addition, the outcome of complaints will also be published on the BSNA website.”Signatory companies will have three months to ensure that all their practices are in line with the new requirements. The complaints procedure will go live on 1 February 2019.Share with your network: Tags: Danoneinfant nutritionNestléUKlast_img read more

The suit alleged that Tripp had “unlawfully hacked” Tesla’s manufacturing operating system (MOS) – writing code that would export confidential information to third parties and planting the code on three different computer systems such that other employees would be “falsely implicated as guilty parties”. Facebook Twitter Elon Musk On Wednesday morning, Martin Tripp was an out-of-work Tesla technician trying to figure out what to do next.By the end of the day, he had been sued by his former employer for alleged hacking and theft, engaged in a hostile email exchange with Elon Musk, come out as a whistleblower, and was being patted down by sheriff’s deputies over allegations that he was threatening to go to his former workplace and “shoot the place up”. The complaint also accused Tripp of making “false claims to the media about the information he stole”, and specifically referenced claims about punctured battery cells, excess scrap material and manufacturing delays. But Tripp, a former process technician at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada, told the Guardian that he leaked information to a reporter at Business Insider because no one at the company was listening to his concerns.“When it’s world impactful, when you’re lying to the world and investors about the cars you’re producing and how sustainable you are, when you’re saying one thing and doing another, the righteous thing is for the world to know,” Tripp said by phone.Tesla has rejected Tripp’s claim to be a whistleblower and challenged the accuracy of the information he provided to Business Insider. In an email to the Guardian about Tripp’s whistleblower claim on Wednesday afternoon, Musk wrote that Tripp “sent me a threatening email” and that “we received a call at the Gigafactory that he was going to come back and shoot people”. Tesla subsequently released a statement saying the company had “received a phone call from a friend of Mr Tripp” warning that Tripp was going to “shoot the place up”. The company alerted the police and increased security at the factory. Sheriff’s deputies met Tripp at his hotel and questioned him. Tesla has said it would not provide further information, while the Storey county sheriff’s office said it was investigating “the threat’s origin”. Automotive industry The lawsuit capped an already strange news cycle for Tesla and its chief executive, Elon Musk.In an email to Tesla employees sent on Sunday evening, Musk wrote that he had just learned that a Tesla employee had engaged in “quite extensive and damaging sabotage to our operations” which included “making direct code changes” to the MOS and transferring data to third parties. Musk went on to say that the alleged saboteur could be an agent of one of the “long list of organizations that want Tesla to die”, including short-sellers, the fossil fuel industry and rival car manufacturers. In a second email sent on Monday, Musk referenced a small fire at the company’s Fremont factory and again appeared to stoke suspicions of sabotage, writing: “Could just be a random event, but as Andy Grove said, ‘Only the paranoid survive.’” The emails were first reported by CNBC.Though Musk never named Tripp in his emails, the allegations of hacking the MOS are similar, and many news outlets identified Tripp as the “alleged saboteur” once the lawsuit was filed. Tripp says that any suggestions that he was a saboteur are “flat-out lies”. “I’ve never gone to any outside company, any oil industry people,” he added. “I care about the public and safety.” Share on Twitter Share on Pinterest Silicon Valley Read more Read more The electric carmaker is suing a former technician for alleged hacking, but he says he’s being scapegoated for leaking concerns @juliacarriew When you’re saying one thing and doing another, the righteous thing is for the world to knowMartin Tripp Facebook Shares122122 Pinterest Support The Guardian Tesla A 40-year-old US navy veteran, Tripp started working for Tesla in October 2017. “I left a really god job and condo in Milwaukee … because I thought I was going to do something good for the world, accelerating the world’s sustainability,” he said, referencing Tesla’s corporate mission. Tripp conceded that he had difficulty adjusting to Tesla’s workplace culture, but he denied a claim by Musk that he had acted out of anger over not receiving a promotion. Instead, he said, he grew increasingly concerned about a range of issues that were eventually reported on by Business Insider, including high rates of “nonconforming material” that ended up being wasted and a batch of battery cells that were mistakenly punctured. “I kept bringing this up to management, supervisors, anyone who would listen,” Tripp said. “Everyone just said, ‘Yeah, whatever.’”Tripp acknowledged that he provided information from Tesla’s MOS to Business Insider, but said that there was no “hacking” involved; he claimed that he simply queried the database to provide verification of his claims to the reporter. “I’m not that smart,” Tripp said. “I don’t know how to code. I tried to teach myself to code and I don’t have the patience.”Tripp also said he did not understand a claim by Tesla that he tried to implicate other employees by planting code on different computers – allegations he said were made to him during Tesla’s investigation. The accusations came up again in the heated email exchange shared by both Musk and Tripp with the Guardian, after Tripp found out that he was being sued.Tripp: “Don’t worry, you have what’s coming to you for the lies you have told to the public and investors.”Musk: “Threatening me only makes it worse for you”Tripp: “I never made a threat. I simply told you that you have what’s coming. Thank you for this gift!!!!”Musk: “You should be ashamed of yourself for framing other people. And of course a company with billions of dollars in product is going to have millions of dollars in scrap. This is not news.“However, betraying your word of honor, breaking the deal you had when Tesla gave you a job and framing your colleagues are wrong and some come with legal penalties. So it goes. Be well.”Musk told the Guardian by email: “He initiated the email exchange this morning at 8.57am. I certainly would not have initiated contact, nor would I even know his personal email address, and it was probably unwise for me to have responded.”Tripp said that he did not intend his email as a threat. “All I meant by ‘you’re going to get what you have coming’ is that the truth is going to come out.” Nevada Electric, hybrid and low-emission cars Pinterest Twitter Share on Facebook Topics Tesla workers say they pay the price for Elon Musk’s big promises Martin Tripp was sued by Tesla for hacking and theft. I just don’t believe it,” the city council speaker, Corey Johnson, said on Wednesday. “There’s no way to make a prediction.”The winner of the Democratic primary will face the Republican Marc Molinaro, the Dutchess county executive, in November.Down the ballot, the Brooklyn city councilman Jumaane Williams is challenging Cuomo’s lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul. Williams has a base of support in Brooklyn’s black community and has won some endorsements that Nixon did not, raising the possibility that he could win and leave Cuomo with an antagonist as his number two.The attorney general’s seat is also up for grabs, after Eric Schneiderman was forced to resign over allegations of violence against several women. Public advocate Letitia James, law professor Zephyr Teachout, represenative Sean Patrick Maloney, and attorney Leecia Eve are competing for the spot. Also closely watched in New York will be the fate of New York senate candidate Julia Salazar, and a group of Democrats in the state senate who allied with Republicans and helped give them control of the chamber. The members of the now-defunct group, called the Independent Democratic Conference, all face strong primary challenges. Andrew Cuomo Share on Twitter New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, will face challenger Cynthia Nixon in New York’s primary elections on 13 September.Photograph: Craig Ruttle/AFP/Getty Images Share on WhatsApp New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, will face off in a primary against challenger Cynthia Nixon today, in the latest test of the wave of progressive challengers who have taken on establishment Democrats across the US.Nixon is an activist – and an actor, best known for her role on Sex and the City – who has hammered the two-term Democratic incumbent on political corruption, including the conviction of a former close aide, and the sorry state of New York’s mass transit system, which has deteriorated under Cuomo’s tenure. The latest polls show Cuomo with a big lead. A Siena poll this week found him leading by a 63% to 22% margin. But Nixon believes she can pull off an upset like other insurgent challengers have in Democratic primaries this year.“Don’t believe the polls, don’t believe the hype. We have a chance to strike a blow for real progressives,” she said on Tuesday on WNYC radio.Cuomo’s campaign suffered a series of missteps over the last weekend of the race. He hosted a marquee event, headlined by Hillary Clinton, to mark the opening of a new bridge named for his father, former governor Mario Cuomo. But the span did not open as planned, as engineers said the old bridge could collapse and endanger the new one. Brazil Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, hailed Abraham Weintraub’s ‘ample experience’.Photograph: Abir Sultan/EPA Cara expressed concern over what concrete projects Weintraub might introduce to improve education in a country where a third of the population from ages 15 to 64 is functionally illiterate. “He argues for reducing spending and Bolsonaro’s cultural war,” he said.“It’s not clear he has the solid project for education on a national level that the position demands,” said Anna Conte, a junior school teacher in Rio.After his appointment was announced on Monday, Weintraub praised Bolsonaro’s intellectual guru Olavo de Carvalho – a former astrologer and philosopher who berates his enemies with obscenity-laden YouTube videos from his home in Richmond, Virginia, and has questioned whether the world revolves around the sun.“He has good ideas but I don’t follow literally what he says,” Weintraub told the Estado de S Paulo newspaper. He worked 18 years at the Votorantim bank, becoming chief economist. On Monday, Weintraub was brought in to replace Ricardo Vélez, whose brief stint in government was marked by a string of controversies. He later corrected himself and said Weintraub had a master’s in administration and an MBA.Both Abraham Weintraub and his brother Adam are specialists in pensions. His brother is part of Bolsonaro’s economic team.“Today, South America and Brazil in particular are vital parts of a clear strategy by totalitarian socialist and communist groups to take power,” Weintraub told the Estado de S Paulo newspaper in a 2018 interview. In the same interview, he said that crack was deliberately introduced in Brazil and that the Colombian Farc rebel group had been “honoured guests” at the Saõ Paulo Forum, an annual gathering of leftist parties.“Look at the files, it’s on the internet!” he said. How to Create Your Own StateoftheArt Text Generation System

first_img The Untold Truth of ‘Batman & Robin’ 4 Comments You Might Also LikePowered By ZergNet Tagged In googleartificial intelligenceextremetech explainsdevelopersHow-Toprogrammingtensorflowpythonopenaifake newsgoogle compute engineGoogle ColabGPT-2text generation Post a Comment 4 Comments Hardly a day goes by when there isn’t a story about fake news. It reminds me of a quote from the favorite radio newsman from my youth, “If you don’t like the news, go out and make some of your own.” OpenAI’s breakthrough language model, the 1.5 billion parameter version of GPT-2, got close enough that the group decided it was too dangerous to release publicly, at least for now. However, OpenAI has now released two smaller versions of the model, along with tools for fine-tuning them on your own text. So, without too much effort, and using dramatically less GPU time than it would take to train from scratch, you can create a tuned version of GPT-2 that will be able to generate text in the style you give it, or even start to answer questions similar to ones you train it with. What Makes GPT-2 SpecialGPT-2 (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer version 2) is based on a version of the very powerful Transformer Attention-based Neural Network. What got the researchers at OpenAI so excited about it was finding that it could address a number of language tasks without being directly trained on them. Once pre-trained with its massive corpus of Reddit data and given the proper prompts, it did a passable job of answering questions and translating languages. It certainly isn’t anything like Watson as far as semantic knowledge, but this type of unsupervised learning is particularly exciting because it removes much of the time and expense needed to label data for supervised learning.Overview of Working With GPT-2For such a powerful tool, the process of working with GPT-2 is thankfully fairly simple, as long as you are at least a little familiar with Tensorflow. Most of the tutorials I’ve found also rely on Python, so having at least a basic knowledge of programming in Python or a similar language is very helpful. Currently, OpenAI has released two pre-trained versions of GPT-2. One (117M) has 117 million parameters, while the other (345M) has 345 million. As you might expect the larger version requires more GPU memory and takes longer to train. You can train either on your CPU, but it is going to be really slow. The first step is downloading one or both of the models. Fortunately, most of the tutorials, including the ones we’ll walk you through below, have Python code to do that for you. Once downloaded, you can run the pre-trained model either to generate text automatically or in response to a prompt you provide. But there is also code that lets you build on the pre-trained model by fine-tuning it on a data source of your choice. Once you’ve tuned your model to your satisfaction, then it’s simply a matter of running it and providing suitable prompts.Working with GPT-2 On Your Local MachineThere are a number of tutorials on this, but my favorite is by Max Woolf. In fact, until the OpenAI release, I was working with his text-generating RNN, which he borrowed from for his GPT-2 work. He’s provided a full package on GitHub for downloading, tuning, and running a GPT-2 based model. You can even snag it directly as a package from PyPl. The readme walks you through the entire process, with some suggestions on how to tweak various parameters. If you happen to have a massive GPU handy, this is a great approach, but since the 345M model needs most of a 16GB GPU for training or tuning, you may need to turn to a cloud GPU.Working with GPT-2 for Free Using Google’s ColabFortunately, there is a way to use a powerful GPU in the cloud for free — Google’s Colab. It isn’t as flexible as an actual Google Compute Engine account, and you have to reload everything each session, but did I mention it’s free? In my testing, I got either a Tesla T4 or a K80 GPU when I initialized a notebook, either one of which is fast enough to train these models at a reasonable clip. The best part is that Woolf has already authored a Colab notebook that echoes the local Python code version of gpt2-simple. Much like the desktop version, you can simply follow along, or tweak parameters to experiment. There is some added complexity in getting the data in and out of Colab, but the notebook will walk you through that as well.Getting Data for Your ProjectNow that powerful language models have been released onto the web, and tutorials abound on how to use them, the hardest part of your project might be creating the dataset you want to use for tuning. If you want to replicate the experiments of others by having it generate Shakespeare or write Star Trek dialog, you can simply snag one that is online. In my case, I wanted to see how the models would do when asked to generate articles like those found on ExtremeTech. I had access to a back catalog of over 12,000 articles from the last 10 years. So I was able to put them together into a text file, and use it as the basis for fine-tuning.If you have other ambitions that include mimicking a website, scraping is certainly an alternative. There are some sophisticated services like ParseHub, but they are limited unless you pay for a commercial plan. I have found the Chrome Extension Webscraper.io to be flexible enough for many applications, and it’s fast and free. One big cautionary note is to pay attention to Terms of Service for whatever website you’re thinking of, as well as any copyright issues. From looking at the output of various language models, they certainly aren’t taught to not plagiarize. So, Can It Do Tech Journalism?Once I had my corpus of 12,000 ExtremeTech articles, I started by trying to train the simplified GPT-2 on my desktop’s Nvidia 1080 GPU. Unfortunately, the GPU’s 8GB of RAM wasn’t enough. So I switched to training the 117M model on my 4-core i7. It wasn’t insanely terrible, but it would have taken over a week to make a real dent even with the smaller of the two models. So I switched to Colab and the 345M model. The training was much, much, faster, but needing to deal with session resets and the unpredictability of which GPU I’d get for each session was annoying.Upgrading to Google’s Compute EngineAfter that, I bit the bullet, signed up for a Google Compute Engine account, and decided to take advantage of the $300 credit Google gives new customers. If you’re not familiar with setting up a VM in the cloud it can be a bit daunting, but there are lots of online guides. It’s simplest if you start with one of the pre-configured VMs that already has Tensorflow installed. I picked a Linux version with 4 vCPUs. Even though my desktop system is Windows, the same Python code ran perfectly on both. You then need to add a GPU, which in my case took a request to Google support for permission. I assume that is because GPU-equipped machines are more expensive and less flexible than CPU-only machines, so they have some type of vetting process. It only took a couple of hours, and I was able to launch a VM with a Tesla T4. When I first logged in (using the built-in SSH) it reminded me that I needed to install Nvidia drivers for the T4, and gave me the command I needed.Next, you need is to set up a file transfer client like WinSCP, and get started working with your model. Once you upload your code and data, create a Python virtual environment (optional), and load up the needed packages, you can proceed the same way you did on your desktop. I trained my model in increments of 15,000 steps and downloaded the model checkpoints each time, so I’d have them for reference. That can be particularly important if you have a small training dataset, as too much training can cause your model to over-fit and actually get worse. So having checkpoints you can return to is valuable.Speaking of checkpoints, like the models, they’re large. So you’ll probably want to add a disk to your VM. By having the disk separate, you can always use it for other projects. The process for automatically mounting it is a bit annoying (it seems like it could be a checkbox, but it’s not). Fortunately, you only have to do it once. After I had my VM up and running with the needed code, model, and training data, I let it loose. The T4 was able to run about one step every 1.5 seconds. The VM I’d configured cost about $25/day (remember that VMs don’t turn themselves off; you need to shut them down if you don’t want to be billed, and persistent disk keeps getting billed even then). To save some money, I transferred the model checkpoints (as a .zip file) back to my desktop. I could then shut down the VM (saving a buck or two an hour), and interact with the model locally. You get the same output either way because the model and checkpoint are identical. The traditional way to evaluate the success of your training is to hold out a portion of your training data as a validation set. If the loss continues to decrease but accuracy (which you get by computing the loss when you run your model on the data you’ve held out for validation) decreases, it is likely you’ve started to over-fit your data and your model is simply “memorizing” your input and feeding it back to you. That reduces its ability to deal with new information. Here’s the Beef: Some Sample Outputs After Days of TrainingAfter experimenting on various types of prompts, I settled on feeding the model (which I’ve nicknamed The Oracle) the first sentences of actual ExtremeTech articles and seeing what it came up with. After 48 hours (106,000 steps in this case) of training on a T4, here is an example:The output of our model after two days of training on a T4 when fed the first sentence of Ryan Whitwam’s Titan article. Obviously, it’s not going to fool anyone, but the model is starting to do a decent job of linking similar concepts together at this point. The more information the model has about a topic, the more it starts to generate plausible text. We write about Windows Update a lot, so I figured I’d let the model give it a try:The model’s response to a prompt about Windows Update after a couple of days of training. With something as subjective as text generation, it is hard to know how far to go with training a model. That’s particularly true because each time a prompt is submitted, you’ll get a different response. If you want to get some plausible or amusing answers, your best bet is to generate several samples for each prompt and look through them yourself. In the case of the Windows Update prompt, we fed the model the same prompt after another few hours of training, and it looked like the extra work might have been helpful:After another few hours of training, here is the best of the samples when given the same prompt about Microsoft Windows. Here’s Why Unsupervised Models are So CoolI was impressed, but not blown away, by the raw predictive performance of GPT-2 (at least the public version) compared with simpler solutions like textgenrnn. What I didn’t catch on to until later was the versatility. GPT-2 is general purpose enough that it can address a wide variety of use cases. For example, if you give it pairs of French and English sentences as a prompt, followed by only a French sentence, it does a plausible job of generating translations. Or if you give it question-and-answer pairs, followed by a question, it does a decent job of coming up with a plausible answer. If you generate some interesting text or articles, please consider sharing, as this is definitely a learning experience for all of us.Now Read:Google Fed a Language Algorithm Math Equations. Destiny 2 Doesnt Currently Run on Ryzen 3000 CPUs but a Fix

It’s not clear why this is currently the case, but according to the developer, a fix is on the way. It will, however, require a motherboard update to resolve.AMD has identified the issue impacting the ability to run Destiny 2 on Ryzen 3000 processors and have implemented a BIOS fix that has been distributed to partners. In the coming days, players will be able to download the updated BIOS from their motherboard providers.— Bungie Help (@BungieHelp) July 12, 2019The problem cropped up a few days ago when Ryzen 3000 early upgraders found they couldn’t run the game. A week ago, Redditor Trinsikk posted:Destiny does not work on pc with the new Ryzen 3000 series Cpu’s. After clicking the play button on battlenet it says the game is running and the destiny 2 exe will show up in task manager but only shows that its using 5-10% cpu but it never will start. A couple threads have popped up on the bungie forums and it seems to be affecting all variants of motherboard /ryzen 3000 setups. Tried reinstalling windows 3 times over with full formats between and reinstalling drivers each time. Bungie halp. It’s not unusual for a new platform to have a few bugs that need to be shaken out, but this is a bit unusual — we don’t recall the last time a UEFI update was required to shake the bugs out of a specific game. In this case, there may be an issue with how Rdrand instructions are being issued on AMD processors. According to Michael Larabel, there’s some evidence of Linux hiccups on the new AMD CPUs as well, and the new CPUs are having some issue booting certain Linux distributions. It seems possible that the issues are related. If so, motherboard updates should resolve the issue.AGESA updates have been demonstrated to improve both the performance and compatibility of Ryzen CPUs in the past. When Ryzen first launched, AMD noted that gaming performance and overall compatibility would both improve over time. This was indeed the case — our initial Gigabyte board that we tested back in 2017 was unable to boot Linux until later updates solved the problem, and the overall performance of first-gen Ryzen indeed improved over time. When we revisited the CPU’s performance later in 2017, we found it had picked up speed in multiple benchmarks. The situation with X570 has been much better; AMD’s overall single-threaded performance is stronger now with the Ryzen 3000 family than it was when first-gen debuted, but there are obviously a few compatibility hiccups still to be addressed. If you’re a Destiny 2 player, watch your motherboard vendor support page for updates. Now Read:AMD’s Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 9 3900X Reviewed: Red Storm RyzenNew Leak: Intel 10-Core Comet Lake CPUs Will Counterattack Ryzen 3000 FamilyIs Moore’s Law Alive, Dead, or Pining for the Fjords?
